Walt Disney’s Moana “We are Polynesia” A CDA of Disney’s representation of the Polynesian culture inside Moana COURSE: Master Thesis in Media and Communication Science with Specialization in International Communication PROGRAMME: International Communication AUTHOR: Melanie Nauta TUTOR: Florencia Enghel SEMESTER: VT 18 JÖNKÖPING UNIVERSITY Master thesis, 15 credits School of Education and Communication Course: Master Thesis in Media and Communication Box 1026, SE-551 11 Jönköping, Sweden Science with Specialization in International +46 (0)36 101000 Communication Term: Spring 2018 ABSTRACT Writer: Melanie Nauta Title: Walt Disney’s Moana. “We are Polynesia”. Subtitle: A CDA of Disney’s representation of the Polynesian culture inside Moana Language: English Pages: 54 Disney is known for their family animation movies with a non-western or indigenous cultural background. Nevertheless, Disney is basically very influential for the perception of cultures by a global audience. Many studies have proven that Disney’s depiction of a certain represented culture has not always been that clean. Of course two side notes are that Disney does make movies from an American dominant perspective and second, there is no such thing as a ‘real’ or ‘correct’ culture. Now, with the movie Moana freshly released in 2016, Disney took a step in the indigenous Polynesian culture. This research uses a thorough Critical Discourse Analysis to analyse how Disney portrays Polynesia and the Polynesian culture inside four selected samples of the movie Moana. This analysis is combined with the theories and concepts of Americanisation, Disneyfication and cultural appropriation to find out mixtures of the portrayed Polynesian culture with American and Disney values.

  • Mulan (1998), Mulan Joins the Army (1939), and a Millennium-Long Intertextual Metamorphosis
arts Article Cultural “Authenticity” as a Conflict-Ridden Hypotext: Mulan (1998), Mulan Joins the Army (1939), and a Millennium-Long Intertextual Metamorphosis Zhuoyi Wang Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures, Hamilton College, Clinton, NY 13323, USA; [email protected] Received: 6 June 2020; Accepted: 7 July 2020; Published: 10 July 2020 Abstract: Disney’s Mulan (1998) has generated much scholarly interest in comparing the film with its hypotext: the Chinese legend of Mulan. While this comparison has produced meaningful criticism of the Orientalism inherent in Disney’s cultural appropriation, it often ironically perpetuates the Orientalist paradigm by reducing the legend into a unified, static entity of the “authentic” Chinese “original”. This paper argues that the Chinese hypotext is an accumulation of dramatically conflicting representations of Mulan with no clear point of origin. It analyzes the Republican-era film adaptation Mulan Joins the Army (1939) as a cultural palimpsest revealing attributes associated with different stages of the legendary figure’s millennium-long intertextual metamorphosis, including a possibly nomadic woman warrior outside China proper, a Confucian role model of loyalty and filial piety, a Sinitic deity in the Sino-Barbarian dichotomy, a focus of male sexual fantasy, a Neo-Confucian exemplar of chastity, and modern models for women established for antagonistic political agendas. Similar to the previous layers of adaptation constituting the hypotext, Disney’s Mulan is simply another hypertext continuing Mulan’s metamorphosis, and it by no means contains the most dramatic intertextual change. Productive criticism of Orientalist cultural appropriations, therefore, should move beyond the dichotomy of the static East versus the change-making West, taking full account of the immense hybridity and fluidity pulsing beneath the fallacy of a monolithic cultural “authenticity”.

  • The Effects of Disney Princess Movies on Girls
The Effects of Disney Princess Movies on Girls By Camille Porter-Phillips Eighth grade project research paper Hilltown Cooperative Charter Public School June 2014 1 Introduction Personally, before this project, I thought that the Disney princesses were foolish. People have been watching Disney movies for nearly 100 years and through the course of this project I realized that they are actually really foolish and my beliefs were affirmed. Since the Walt Disney company started in 1923 (Gillies), its movies have become very widespread and pervasive. My question is, have Disney princess movies affected girls? In this essay I will show that watching princess movies affects girls’ independence and body image. I will first give a background of Disney and their princesses, then show how the princess films might affect girls and then describe how to evaluate them. Background The first princess movie the Walt Disney company produced was Snow White, in 1937. It was the first animated feature film to come out of the0 U.S. (Disney). Next came Cinderella, in 1950. Then Sleeping Beauty in 1959. Thirty years later in 1989 The Little Mermaid came out. Then in 1991 Beauty and the Beast. The very next year in 1992 Aladdin came to theaters. Then Pocahontas, in 1995. But this was not the last one, more and more princess movies are produced by Disney every few years. Snow White is about a girl who runs away from an evil queen because the queen wants to kill Snow White. When she meets 12 dwarfs she is happy to cook and take care of them.
