PRESS RELEASE FEBRUARY 2016

Spectacular garden exhibition in ’s parks throughout 2016

Gothenburg Green World is a glorious celebration of horticulture by the finest parks and gardens in Scandinavia in 2016. It promises a packed programme of events and fantastic exhibitions for every season.

Gothenburg aims to be the leading garden destination in Scandinavia. Leading parks and gardens in the Gothenburg region are investing in a collective garden exhibition that will last throughout 2016 – Gothenburg Green World. “We are joining forces to make 2016 the ‘Year of the Horticultural Capital’,” says Cecilia Liljedahl, project manager for Gothenburg Green World.

Unique and innovative Gothenburg has a great variety of parks and gardens – ranging from eighteenth-century parks, of which Gunnebo is the best example in , to historic city parks such as Garden Society of Gothenburg (Trädgårdsföreningen) with its unique Palm House, and Gothenburg Botanical Garden, which ranks among the best in Europe, to the newly created Jonsered Gardens (Jonsereds trädgårdar) with its strong social profile, to mention just a few. “It starts on 27 February at Gothenburg Botanical Garden, with Wild Spring, and continues with a comprehensive programme that features several botanical exhibitions. There will be orangery specimens at Gunnebo House and Gardens, Land Art, visiting designers from parks in the UK and Germany, garden photography and a spectacular Japanese bamboo installation in the city centre.”

Organic growing and concept gardens Organic cultivation and food will also come under the spotlight during Gothenburg Green World. “The Green City” theme will show off all the green initiatives that are thriving around the city, inspired by the parks and their talented gardeners. They include concept gardens on the main boulevard, Avenyn, in summer, when Götaplatsen square will also undergo a green transformation. “We want to encourage interest throughout the city, by using the finest parks to set examples and inspire people,” says Cecilia Liljedahl, who stresses the important role that large parks and gardens play in passing on gardening knowledge and traditions.

Supplementing the main parks, the Gothenburg Garden Route will link together Jonsered Gardens, Growing Spaces in Lerum (Lerums Växtrum), Råda Manor and Tjolöholm Castle, making Gothenburg the leading garden destination in Scandinavia.
