We found 46 of the 358 described cycad species had at least one element reported to date. The only genus that was missing from the data was Microcycas. Many of the species reports contained concentrations of one to several macronutrients and no other elements. The cycad leaves contained greater nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations than the reported means for plants throughout the world. Magnesium was identified as the macronutrient that has been least studied. -

AUSTRALIAN NATURAL PRODUCT RESEARCH J. R. PRICE Chtmzical Research Laboratories, C.S.I.R.O., Melbourne, Australia At a meeting of this kind, a considerable proportion of the papers delivered will inevitably be concerned with work carried out in the host country. I have assumed, therefore, that the purpose of the Organizing Committee in inviting me to speak to you about Australian natural product chemistry was to provide a framework for the picture which thesepaperswill present. To do this it will be necessary forme to tell you a little about the historical background. We are told that, in 1788, the first year ofEuropean settlement in Australia, the essential oil of Eucalyptus piperita was distilled and used medicinally as a substitute for oil of peppermint. But it seems unlikely that the enterprise shown by those early settlers had any significant inftuence on the utilization or study of the country's plant products1 • It was not until 1852 that the distillation of essential oils was investigated seriously, and was later placed on a commercial basis, by a man named J oseph Bosisto, who set up a still, only a few miles from here, outside Melbourne. I t is not clear whether the credit for this action is due solely to Bosisto, because at about the same time a second, and very significant, character appeared on the scene. This was Ferdinand von Mueller, a German from Rostock, who became Government Botanist ofVictoria in 1853 and made a magnificant contribu tion to the botanical exploration of Australia and to the systematic study and description of the Australian ftora. -

Handout 2 Natural Heritage Criteria and the Attributes of Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area The notes that follow were derived by deconstructing the original 1988 nomination document to identify the specific themes and attributes which have been recognised as contributing to the Outstanding Universal Value of the Wet Tropics. The notes also provide brief statements of justification for the specific examples provided in the nomination documentation. Steve Goosem, December 2012 Natural Heritage Criteria: (1) Outstanding examples representing the major stages in the earth’s evolutionary history Values: refers to the surviving taxa that are representative of eight ‘stages’ in the evolutionary history of the earth. Relict species and lineages are the elements of this World Heritage value. Attribute of OUV (a) The Age of the Pteridophytes Significance One of the most significant evolutionary events on this planet was the adaptation in the Palaeozoic Era of plants to life on the land. The earliest known (plant) forms were from the Silurian Period more than 400 million years ago. These were spore-producing plants which reached their greatest development 100 million years later during the Carboniferous Period. This stage of the earth’s evolutionary history, involving the proliferation of club mosses (lycopods) and ferns is commonly described as the Age of the Pteridophytes. The range of primitive relict genera representative of the major and most ancient evolutionary groups of pteridophytes occurring in the Wet Tropics is equalled only in the more extensive New Guinea rainforests that were once continuous with those of the listed area. -

About 7-14 main lateral veins on each side of the midrib. Oil dots visible with hand lens and to the naked eye. Occasionally 1 or 2 (-4) flat circular glands on lower leaf surface. Flowers Inflorescence axillary, solitary or few flowered, in fascicles or very reduced cymes. Pedicels nil or to 3 mm long. Flowers 5-7 mm long, white, sepals c. 2 mm long, petals free 4-10 mm long. Stamens eight, dimorphic, four long and four short. Anther filaments hairy, spiny glands present just below the anthers on the longer Leaf glands from above [not vouchered]. -

POLICY No 7 POLICY No 7 LANDSCAPING DOUGLAS SHIRE COUNCIL PLANNING SCHEME POLICY NO 7 Landscaping Intent The intent of this Policy is to specify landscaping procedures, design requirements and a Plant Species Schedule for developments which have landscaping requirements. This Policy should be read in conjunction with the Landscaping Code and other relevant parts of the Planning Scheme. Objectives The objectives of this Policy are: • to ensure high quality landscaping throughout the Shire; • to provide for a distinctive landscape character to develop in different Localities throughout the Shire; and • to establish guidelines which ensure high quality landscaping is provided and maintained as an important visual element which contributes to the landscape integrity of the Shire. Content This Landscaping Policy incorporates the following: • Landscape Procedures and Assessment; • Minimum Design Requirements for Development • Minimum Design Requirements for Reconfiguring a Lot • Landscape Zones in the Douglas Shire • Plant Species Schedule Information to be Provided Detailed Landscape Plans prepared by a suitably qualified professional drawn to scale, are to be submitted to the Council for assessment prior to the issue of a Building Permit. However, in the case of developments which are Code assessable or Impact assessable, a Landscape Plan is to be submitted with the Development Assessment Application. The Landscape Plan is to address the requirements set out in the Landscaping Code and to include: • the location, size, and species of existing vegetation; • vegetation to be retained and necessary protective measures; • any vegetation proposed to be removed; • existing and proposed surface levels; August, 2006 Page 48 • location of hard and soft landscaped areas; • the indicative location, number, size and species of plants; and • a Statement of Intent outlining the intent of each element of the Plan. -

Species selection guidelines Tree species selection This section of the plan provides guidance around the selection of species for use as street trees in the Sunshine Coast Council area and includes region-wide street tree palettes for specific functions and settings. More specific guidance on signature and natural character palettes and lists of trees suitable for use in residential streets for each of the region's 27 Local plan areas are contained within Part B – Street tree strategies of the plan. Street tree palettes will be periodically reviewed as an outcome of street tree trials, the development of new species varieties and cultivars, or the advent of new pest or disease threats that may alter the performance and reliability of currently listed species. The plan is to be used in association with the Sunshine Coast Council Open Space Landscape Infrastructure Manual where guidance for tree stock selection (in line with AS 2303–2018 Tree stock for landscape use) and tree planting and maintenance specifications can be found. For standard advanced tree planting detail, maintenance specifications and guidelines for the selection of tree stock see also the Sunshine Coast Open Space Landscape Infrastructure Manual – Embellishments – Planting Landscape). The manual's Plant Index contains a comprehensive list of all plant species deemed suitable for cultivation in Sunshine Coast amenity landscapes. Vegetation Report on the Proposed Blue Hole Cultural, Environmental & Recreation Reserve Report on the Vegetation of the Proposed Blue Hole Cultural, Environmental & Recreation Reserve 1.0 Introduction The area covered by this report is described as the proposed Lot 1 on SP144713; Parish of Alexandra; being an unregistered plan prepared by the C & B Group for the Douglas Shire Council. This proposed Lot has an area of 1.394 hectares and consists of the Flame Tree Road Reserve and part of a USL, which is a small portion of the bed of Cooper Creek. It is proposed that the Flame Tree Road Reserve and part of the USL be transferred to enable the creation of a Cultural, Environmental and Recreation Reserve to be managed in Trust by the Douglas Shire Council. The proposed Cultural, Environmental and Recreation Reserve will have an area of 1.394 hectares and will if the plan is registered become Lot 1 of SP144713; Parish of Alexandra; County of Solander.
