FOUR OAKS MARLBOROUGH • WILTSHIRE FOUR OAKS LITTLE BEDWYN • WILTSHIRE These particulars are intended only as a guide and must not be relied upon as statements of fact. Your attention is drawn to the Important Notice on the last page of the text. The house is bespoke This goes from the bricks, handmade in Yorkshire, commissioned in five different colours, with specials to turn the angled corners, right down to the zinc dipped heated towel rails, which are designed for the house. The feel is one of solidity, beginning from the way the brick pointing is ‘bagged’ rather than ruled, to make the brick surfaces a unity, with the windows sometimes set flush, sometimes let deep into the walls. Inside, the crafted lime plaster, subtly different on ceilings and walls, and the extensive use of character oak (chosen for its variety, medullar rays and shakes) give every surface weight, depth and texture. It is a light filled house, with big double glazed galvanized metal windows, with many rooms having three aspects, most also having breadboard oak shutters. The fittings continue the theme of quietly considered elegance and simplicity, with door furniture from the boutique firm Ize, wall lights from BTC and wiring by Flexform. At the same time there is a feeling of spaciousness, with landings which form rooms themselves, and on the first floor the bedrooms gain a lift at ceiling edges, borrowing height from the attic floor above. There is a generosity that permeates every detail. The doors are mainly thicker, wider and taller than normal, as well as being solid oak. The gutters, downpipes and roofs of the garage buildings are all copper. Resin floors have a slight ‘give’ from being laid over crumb. These details give a nurturing feel. Environmental credentials are present but lightly worn, with an extensive ground source heating system, solar thermal, reed bed, and a one house heat recovery ventilation system. The best has been taken from technology for the home, with light dimming controls, zoned underfloor heating on the ground and basement, and information cabling. The plan of the house, with its energising kink, parries the set and solid external appearance. Views across the landings make angled and dynamic connections, just as the views across the downs root the house in its landscape, south to the Downs and north to Chisbury. The overall design with its material of brick and tile is grounded in the vernacular tradition and references informal farm buildings as well as the contemporary.
