About David Boudia

David Boudia is a world-class Olympic champion, husband, father, and author of GREATER THAN GOLD: From Olympic Heartbreak to Ultimate Redemption (Nelson Books; $24.99). Boudia began his career as an elite athlete in 2000 at the age of 11. Once petrified of diving from the 10-meter platform, he will compete as a member of Team USA in his third Olympics this summer in Rio.

By 2005, Boudia earned a spot on the U.S. National Diving Team and won the National Championship. From 2006-2008 he and his diving partner Thomas Finchum medaled in 14 major international competitions (10 consecutive). Boudia competed in the 2008 Olympic Team, finishing the 10th individual in the 10m platform, and 5th with Finchum in the synchronized 10m.

After the 2008 Olympics, David competed at Purdue University where he broke records and won major competitions, finishing his college career with six NCAA national titles. While at Purdue he continued to thrive on the international stage, winning five medals in the 2012 FINA Diving World Series. He also became the first American male since 1986 to medal in the 10m platform at a World Championship with a Silver medal in China. David officially turned pro in 2011, forgoing his final year of college eligibility to focus on the 2012 Olympics. Boudia won two medals at the 2012 Olympics in London, including a thrilling final-round performance in the individual 10m platform winning him the Gold medal. He also won Bronze with partner Nick McCrory in the synchronized 10m platform, becoming the first American duo to medal in the event, and the first Olympic medal for the U.S. in men’s diving since the 1996 Games in Atlanta- the Olympic Games that first captured David’s eye.

In his book, GREATER THAN GOLD, Boudia shares raw and candid details of his deeply personal and fascinating journey from the seven year-old who watched in awe as Team USA’s “Magnificent Seven” won Olympic gold in gymnastics at the 1996 Atlanta games and vowed to one day compete in an Olympics, too; to the punk athlete who, having smoked marijuana the night before, failed a random drug test at Purdue University; to the entitled competitor who faced a humiliating loss during the 2008 Olympics; to the man who refocused, re-centered and won gold in London’s 2012 Olympic games.

Boudia is sponsored by several of the world’s most elite brands including Nike, Deloitte, TD Ameritrade, and Coca Cola’s Zico Coconut Water. He has been featured in The New York Times, ESPN, Sports Illustrated, on TODAY, and in many other media outlets. Boudia lives with his wife and daughter in West Lafayette, IN.
