Today, it is a vibrant 2,800-plus member national association comprised of the sports public relations, com- munications and information professionals throughout all levels of collegiate athletics in the United States and Canada. CoSIDA has two primary missions as it seeks to have its profes- sion, organization and membership take its rightful leadership role within the decision-making levels of the intercol- legiate athletics community: 1) Help the communications and media relations professionals at all collegiate levels with professional development and continuing education as it relates to strategically dealing in an effective manner with the various issues, challenges and opportunities that now exist within the fast-paced and ever-changing communications envi- ronment. 2) Play a signifi cant leadership and resource role ( i.e. “Strategic Communicators for College Athletics” ) within the overall enterprise of collegiate athletics thus helping the other management groups and their respective memberships deal with a set of communications-based issues that is the most complex and challenging in history. CoSIDA founded in the mid 1950’s the highly regarded “Academic All-Ameri- ca” program, unquestionably regarded as the premier awards program in intercollegiate athletics for honoring combined academic and athletic excellence. CoSIDA, which became an affi liated partner with NACDA (National Association of Col- legiate Directors of Athletics in December of 2008, continues to fully manage and administer that program today. CoSIDA’s Board of Director leadership is comprised of nine elected offi cer positions (President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, 3rd Vice President, three Past Presidents removed, a treasurer and secretary-Digest editor), along with 10 other Board appointees. These athletic PR professionals, along with an Executive Director, Director of External Affairs and Director of Internal Operations, compose the leadership group. In addition, the association has been strengthened since the summer of 2008 with the creation of additional management teams: the University Division Management Advisory Committee (UDMAC) and the College Division Management Advisory Committee (CDMAC). The UDMAC and CDMAC were created as part of the Board’s strategic initiatives in creating a more federated management structure within Co- SIDA. The purpose of these management teams is to encourage divisional leadership groups to take a more direct and personal responsibility approach in regards to division-specifi c CoSIDA matters. John Humenik, who has over 30 years of award-winning experience in the sports public relations and communications industry, serves as the Executive Director for CoSIDA. He was named to that post - as the fi rst Executive Director in the history of the organization - in January 2008 and serves as the organization’s senior administrator working closely with its Board of Directors and staff in handling the organization’s day-to-day administration and operations as well as the devel- opment of short- and long-term strategic planning and initiatives. He also serves as the organization’s primary liaison with all of the nation’s collegiate sports governing bodies, sports management organizations and coaches associations. Barn Kowal was hired as Director of External Affairs in 2009 and Will Roleson joined the CoSIDA staff in 2011 as Director of Internal Operations.
