  • DECEMBER 2002 from the President
DECEMBER 2002 From the President s we look ahead to the coming new year, we are reminded of the many people and activities that have shepherded us in our mission as a Christian University. In his Founders’ Day Convocation address, Rev. Mark Denison BA ’82, encouraged the faculty, staff, students, trustees and Founders present to look to Hebrews 12 “ ... persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus.” As testament to the power of the Word, Mark acknowledged the Founders, faculty and staff who ran the good race and are now looking to us to continue that race in our lives. In recollecting hisA HBU experiences, he remembered members of the HBU family who shaped the University and have gone on to be with the Lord, including Dr. Walter Lumpkin BA’81, a beloved Christianity professor and friend to many on campus. In other celebrations of God’s Word, the University dedicated its Bible in America Museum collection with a brunch at Houston’s Power Center. There, Dr. Kirbyjon Caldwell, Pastor of Windsor Village Methodist Church and Dr. Jeannette Clift George, Director of the A.D. Players, shared accounts of the Bible’s significance and history to a crowd of more than 700. At The Guild’s annual Christmas Luncheon, Colleen Swindoll Dane continued the holiday season’s focus on Jesus Christ in her presentation, “In the Shadow of the Cross.” When it comes to the HBU family, we are continually blessed by people who share a common commitment to serving the University’s mission.

  • Renormalizing Individual Performance Metrics for Cultural Heritage Management of Sports Records
Renormalizing individual performance metrics for cultural heritage management of sports records Alexander M. Petersen1 and Orion Penner2 1Management of Complex Systems Department, Ernest and Julio Gallo Management Program, School of Engineering, University of California, Merced, CA 95343 2Chair of Innovation and Intellectual Property Policy, College of Management of Technology, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. (Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to significant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we find that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era.

  • Basketball Skills | Intrainingsports.Com | 561-281-8330
Basketball Skills | InTrainingSports.com | 561-281-8330 Putting the ball through the hoop is obviously the object of the game of basketball. Because of this, good shooters are coveted by coaches and feared by opponents. To no one’s surprise, shooting is given the highest priority of all basketball skills. While most coaches work regularly with their players on shooting fundamentals, there are some elements of shot making that are frequently overlooked. Below are some examples of often neglected aspects of basketball shooting. We need to encourage players to become mindful of those varied facets and watch proudly as your team’s shooting percentages and scoring averages soar. CATCHING THE BASKETBALL Catching the basketball is without question the most underrated (and under-practiced) aspect of good shooting. Prior to every scoring opportunity, with the exception of the rare follow-up tip, securing the ball cleanly is required. It doesn’t matter if you’re receiving a teammate’s pass, picking up your own dribble, or grabbing an offensive rebound, you must first gain possession of the basketball, or scoring will not be an option. While coaches should always drill their players diligently on the fundamentals of pass catching such as receiving the basketball with arms slightly bent and at a reasonable distance from the body, and establishing and maintaining control of a pass with finger-tips rather than palms, far and away the most common problem players have relating to pass catching is readiness. Too many players, especially young players, have what can best be described as lazy hands. Here’s the typical situation: A player comes off a down screen, brushing past the screener shoulder-to-shoulder with eyes focused intently on the passer—just how the coach taught it in pre- season practice.
