› Israelis Elect National Bird: the Hoopoe Within the framework of Israel's 60th anniversary celebrations, the Society for the Protection of Israel initiated a competition to choose Israel's national bird. In May 2008, President Shimon Peres declared the hoopoe, or "duchifat" in Hebrew, as the winner among 10 other local birds which were nominated for the prestigious title. During the course of the competition, pictures and descriptions of the birds were made available on the website of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel and the public was asked to cast their vote for their favorite bird. The hoopoe, a pink, black and white- crested bird, is mentioned in Jewish legends about King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. According to Dr. Yossi Leshem of Israel's International Center for the Study of Bird Migration at Latrun, who initiated the contest, the process of selecting Israel's national bird was much more than a competition; it was a lesson in democracy and in bird preservation awareness as well.
