Penn's Pick: the Beatles All Time Greatest Riffs Hit Songs Deconstructed Deconstructing Today's Hits for Songwriting Success http://reports.hitsongsdeconstructed.com Penn's Pick: The Beatles All Time Greatest Riffs Band: The Beatles Songs: Assorted Writers: Assorted Years Recorded: 1965 – 1969 Genre: Rock In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Beatles landing in the United States and changing the course of popular music more so than any other group before or since, we’re featuring our top 5 riff picks that would give the Stones, Zeppelin, Sabbath or any other riff machine of a band a run for their money. With so many to choose from, it was an almost impossible task to get the list down to just 5. Day Tripper, Hey Bulldog, Helter Skelter, Come Together, Paperback Writer, I Want You (She’s So Heavy), Dr. Robert, Tax Man, Get Back, … leaving any one of them off the list would seem like a sacrilege. It had to be done, though! What’s your top 5? Let us know! #1 Day Tripper Recorded in 1965, this riff is just as infectious as anything the Stone’s ever came up with, including Satisfaction and Jumpin’ Jack Flash. The fact that it occurs more frequently within the song than any of the other riffs that follow qualifies it for top distinction (but it was a TOUGH call!) #2 Paperback Writer 1 / 2 Hit Songs Deconstructed Deconstructing Today's Hits for Songwriting Success http://reports.hitsongsdeconstructed.com Recorded in 1966, I personally think that this riff is better and more powerful than Day Tripper, but it doesn’t occur as often within the song, hence the #2 position. #3 Hey Bulldog An obscure gem (by Beatles standards) recorded in 1968, not only does this song possess one of their greatest riffs ever, but it also showcases Paul’s prowess as one of the most innovative, unique bass players of all time. For those of you who never really saw him in this light, check this out! #4 I Want You (She’s So Heavy) Recorded in 1969, the exceptionally long and repetitive 3 minute outro within this song contains one of the most ominous, infectious riffs ever written. The first time that I heard this I thought it was Sabbath, NOT the Beatles! #5 Come Together Recorded in 1969, Paul’s bass line in Come Together is easily one of the most recognizable riffs in the history of Rock. As a side note, in 1973 a lawsuit was brought against Lennon by Big Seven Music Corp. contending that he ripped off parts of Check Berry’s You Can’t Catch Me, including both the lyrics and music. The track is notable for the backwards vocal from John Lennon at the end of the song. The section is John singing part of the first verse but the tape is superimposed backwards in the mix. The song contains slowed down instruments, guitar distortion, and vocals recorded and played back at variable speed. Aside from Paul McCartney’s dominant bass part, the song features a striking drum performance from Ringo, who has called “Rain” his favorite Beatles song. The B-side of “Paperback Writer.” Issued in America on May 23, 1966 and the UK on June 10, 1966, several months in advance of the “Revolver” album. On U.S. album: Hey Jude - Capitol LP (1970) 2 3 The Beatles - Paperback Writer - A Collection Of Beatles Oldies (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul The Beatles’ twelfth single release for EMI’s Parlophone label. Recorded on April 13 and 14, 1966. The track is notable for Paul McCartney’s furious bass line. The bass is so prominent in the mix that sound engineers at EMI worried it could cause the stylus of a record player tone arm (the needle thing on record players) to jump when fans played the 45 RPM single at home. Thankfully, no such calamity occurred. For this heavy bass sound Paul’s chose to replace his usual Hofner bass with a Rickenbacker 4001S bass.

Side two was devoted entirely to George Martin's musical score for the movie. Thirty years later it was decided to restore the film, digitalising the soundtrack in the process, and the songtrack album is a result of that remastering. Released in 1999, it was the first collection of Beatles songs to get a digital remix, but more significantly it dispensed with the film score that had appeared on side two and included instead most of the other songs featured in the film that hadn't appeared on the earlier LP.

On February 25, 1964 they dove into new songs slated for their film.     Come Together Genre Record labels should Come Together (maybe not right now, but some time before the conference), complete an engineering-related service project, and put together a hit music video. Artists Come Together should involve the efforts of the entire record label (the ASCE Student Chapter). Presentations will be given by the production team of up to four members. Instruments ▪ Record labels should produce a music video no shorter than 2 minutes but no longer than 3 minutes. Videos shorter than 1 minute or longer than 4 minutes will be disqualified. ▪ Music choice should be appropriate for a semi-professional environment. ▪ Production teams should bring the music video to the presentation on a USB drive. ▪ Music videos should be exported in the MP4 (.mp4) file format. ▪ The music video should clearly identify its title and the name of your record label. ▪ The music video should clearly cite the music used and its recording artist(s). Videos that do not cite the music and its recording artist(s) will be disqualified. Tracks Record labels will be assigned timeslots the day of the competition. Record labels will send their production team to present the music video to judges from “the Academy.” The team will show the music video and respond to the judges’ questions. Listen to the album several times as if you were a record critic and write an overview of the album, i.e. style of music, mood, highlights, lowlights, etc. Here are some things to consider: Is there a unifying theme throughout the album? Are there contrasting themes? If so, what are they? Is there enough variety musically in your opinion? What is it about this album in particular that makes it stand out? Section 2 Pick four songs and discuss them in more detail. Discuss your likes and dislikes as we have in relation to the journal entries in class but you will need to go into more detail.
