Cornwallis e-bulletin Friday 17th July 2020 Message from the Headteacher, Mrs Linney-Drouet

This is our final edition for this academic year. What a year it has been! I certainly did not anticipate to have such an unusual one. However, I believe it has made us stronger and better as a community. Every single one of us has had to adapt to new ways of living, working and studying, and I believe we have all coped brilliantly. As a Headteacher, I constantly ask myself “Are we getting it right?” and my colleagues will tell you that I expect all of them to do the same. Considering all the complimentary emails I have received, and the feedback from members of staff, I am confident that we did get the balance right during the school closure. I am also confident that the challenges we faced will spur us on to become even better and continue our journey towards outstanding. Thank you for your engagement and support over the year. In particular, I would like to thank all our class champions who have produced such high quality work throughout this difficult period, well done for upholding our “SMILE” ethos with such pride. We have all worked very hard to provide the best education as well as a sense of belonging and pride, and we will continue to be reflective in order to make further improvements. This is the time of year when we often say goodbye to some of our colleagues. This year, we will be saying goodbye to Mrs Longhurst, Miss Mannouch, Mr Towhig, Mrs Broome, Mr Howard and Miss Avard. I would like to thank them all for their hard work and dedication to the school. I wish them all the very best in their new school.

We will be welcoming new members of staff in September: Mr Rimmer – Teacher of Geography Mrs Golan – Teacher of Psychology Mrs Williamson – Teaching Assistant Mr Finch – Teacher of History and Head of House Ms McMillian – Teaching Assistant Miss Purohit – Teacher of English Ms Gale – Teaching Assistant

May I remind you that our end of term officially ends at 12pm on Friday 17th July. As announced by the Department for Education, there will be no child care provision for our Key Workers’ children and vulnerable students over the Summer break. I would like to thank all staff who have come into school during the closure to look after those students who needed it the most. Be aware that there will be no “Home Learning” provision during the Summer break either.

Dear students/parents/carers,

I am absolutely thrilled to be able to write to you as your newly appointed Head of School, from September. KS3 & KS4 Pastoral Update Mr Spurling: Head of Prospective Year 7 Welcome to the final e-bulletin of Term 6. I hope that you are continuing to stay safe and well. I'm sure that you are now engaged in many end of term activities at your Primary Schools, and are preparing to bid farewell to your teachers and friends - some of whom won't be coming to Cornwallis in September. Although saying goodbye to your is sad for many of you, I'm hoping that it is outweighed by the sense of excitement of coming to Cornwallis in September.

A I mentioned in previous newsletters, you will have had plenty to keep you occupied at school but I'm also inviting you to continue to dip into some of the different subject specific tasks which your son / daughter can complete over the summer in order that they feel more 'Year 7 ready' before September. The menu of choices is available by using this link: https://wakelet.com/@CornwallisAcademy, and includes some fantastic work in all subjects which you can work on over the next few weeks.

Miss Perry, many of the other staff and I enjoyed meeting you and your parents over a two week period either face to face or on zoom for your Year 7 interviews. I was delighted to see how excited you are to be coming to Cornwallis in September, and I hope that the process helped you feel clear about the expectations and opportunities which await you at the academy.

If your son/daughter qualifies for Pupil Premium (currently receives Free school meals, adopted from care, have a parent in the Armed Services, Ever6) and you need support with the transition, please contact Miss Barton by email [email protected].

I'm thoroughly looking forward to meeting you all properly in September, but in the meantime, I hope that you have a great summer holiday. Please have fun with your family and friends, but stay safe.

Finally, if you need to contact me or Miss Perry over the summer, please feel free to do so.

Mr King: Head of Year 7 To our year 7 students and families,

The end of this academic year has been quite different! We have all stood strong and brave in the midst of a pandemic and watched as the world has tried to save lives and find a cure or vaccine. Covid-19 has forced us to make many changes to our lives, especially with regards to our education. It has been amazing to witness the resilience and perseverance of our students, overcoming many emotions to complete their school work. As we move forward, you all continue to demonstrate diligence, motivation and determination to work to the best of your ability, something we are incredibly proud of. I would also like to say a massive thank you to our parents/guardians, who have made your homes your school, putting in the time and effort to teach and support our students. I assure you that when we return, the staff at Cornwallis Academy will ensure that no learning has been lost and that our students are able to fulfil their potential.

As the academic year comes to an end, I feel it is important we remember all the wonderful things that happened prior to the pandemic. It was a year filled with new learning experiences. It can be very overwhelming beginning , however we feel that our year 7 students have settled fantastically well, making friends and adhering to school policies. It has been great to see how they have become a part of the Cornwallis Academy community, smiling every day as they endeavour to progress each and every day. We always ensure our students aim to be successful every day they walk through the school doors. In order to get the very best out of themselves, they need to be motivated and inspired to learn. Most importantly, the students need to be excited and engaged. If our students adhere to these philosophies each and every day, they will surpass all expectations and get the very best out of themselves. Many accomplishments were experienced by our students, whether they represented the school sports teams, took part in our dance/drama productions or were a part of the student council, aiming to make changes to our school community. We look forward to experiencing many more successes and achievements in the forthcoming year with our year group.

As you are aware, students are with their form tutor for 25 minutes every morning. This member of staff has become their main point of contact and fantastic relationships have been formed. Therefore, I want to personally say a massive thank you to my year 7 team for all their hard work, perseverance and dedication to the role as form tutor; Mr Clapp, Mr Hernandez, Miss Tompsett, Mrs Sperryn, Dr Cherry, Mrs Hatch, Miss Delamere-Ayling and Mrs Munday. In addition to the form tutors, a huge thank you also goes to our Year 7 ICM, Mrs Cleall. Additionally, any issues or concerns have been quickly established due to the relationship you have with our students, enabling us to deal with them efficiently.

Miss Harding: Head of Year 10 As the academic year draws to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all year 10 students, parents, guardians and families on how well you have all managed within these challenging and unprecedented times. I would like to thank you all for your continued support and understanding and I think you will agree that we have really shown continued community spirit over the last few months.

Understandably, moving into Year 11 in September will raise apprehension with regards to GCSE preparations and examinations. Please let me reassure you that as always support and guidance will be put in place. The level of dedication and work ethic from Year 10 students during this time has been fantastic and I am sure this will continue when we return. In order to prepare for September, implementing some or all of the following things over the summer holidays may really help with the transition back to school: - Put in place clear routines - Plan your days - Go to bed and get up at reasonable times - Eat a balanced diet - Exercise - Complete mindfulness activities - Get fresh air

At this time of year, we would normally be saying goodbye to students with an end of year assembly, celebrating successes and achievements. As we are unable to hold our assembly, I wanted to take this opportunity to recognise the achievements of our Year 10 students as outlined below:

News Transport/Bus Pass Information Further to the letter distributed on the 3rd of July please see below an additional update from County Council RE public transport for school return and the new academic year. I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate that more than ever, it is important to carefully consider your application and how any possible changes to school attendance patterns, guidance about the use of buses etc could influence your son/daughter(s) likely travel habits. Less regular use of the annual passes, for example, could affect the value that it represents to you as a family so this should be considered before buying the product. If travelling less frequently, then shorter period tickets bought directly from operators may represent better value.

The most recent advice provided to the transport industry acknowledges that whilst 100% of the School’s cohort are intended to be in attendance from September, the current requirement for Social Distancing on buses means that typically networks will only be able to cater for around 30% of the numbers usually travelling by bus. The disparity between capacities within schools and that on the transport network was always the industries worse nightmare and whilst bus capacity remains restricted it means that we have to adopt a different and stronger line of messaging that goes beyond the need for parents to carefully consider the value of Travel Saver Passes for users in the coming year.

We appreciate that this goes against all of the usual principles around encouraging bus use and as soon as the network is in a position to provide full capacity, we will again promote the bus as the right mode for all users. Kent County Council will enable parents to defer the decision as to whether to apply, they will then make a part year pass available at a pro rata’d cost in the event that guidance around the use of buses relaxes.

Kent County Council have this morning opened for Travel Saver Applications for the coming Academic Year. To access more information or to apply then go to;

www.kent.gov.uk/education-and-children/schools/school-transport/KCC-travel-saver

https://www.kent.gov.uk/education-and-children/schools/school-transport/16-travel-saver

Please note that we have had to delay opening for applications for children in Care Categories (In Care and Care Leavers) who qualify for a free pass whilst we develop the application portal to accommodate this. We will make this available ASAP – hopefully within the next 10 days.

Please be assured that as and when we receive any information regarding school transport we will communicate this to you using our social media platforms and other means.

Welcoming our Emotional Wellbeing Practitioners What do Emotional Wellbeing Practitioners do?

Education Mental Health Practitioners (EWPs) aim to improve access to mental health support for children, young people and their families. Using evidence-based principles, we provide low intensity interventions for young people experiencing common emotional wellbeing difficulties such as, low mood, anxiety and behavioural difficulties. EWPs also provide one-to-one support, run groups and workshops in educational settings for children and young people as well as parents and school staff. Most importantly, we will work together with Cornwallis Academy to support children Young People and their families. We also work with school staff to help improve wellbeing across the school as a whole.

Who are the EWPs in Cornwallis? Hello I’m Sam! After graduating with a psychology degree, I gained my experience in the mental health field of work at and Mid Kent Mind, where I developed my passion for helping to improve the emotional wellbeing of young people. This is what motivated me to take on the role of an Emotional Wellbeing Practitioner in which I could be more heavily involved with schools across Maidstone. I am very much looking forward to working with students, parents and staff at Cornwallis Academy in the new school year. Some of my other passions involve travelling, spending time with family and friends and music events.

Hello! My name is Lauren and I am part of the new Emotional Wellbeing Team in Cornwallis. Before starting this role I have had two school-based support roles and I have completed an Undergraduate degree in Psychology and a Masters in Child and Adolescent Mental Health. I have also volunteered in various psychiatric facilities. I am looking forward to combining my skills from working in schools and my knowledge of mental health to create positive change regarding wellbeing in your school. Outside of work my hobbies include travelling and reading.

Hi, my name is Karen. I have worked with children and young people in both secondary and primary schools for over 14 years. I particularly enjoyed teaching PSHE, RE and Citizenship. My hobbies are Musical Theatre and dance. I became an EWP because I believe that looking after our emotional and mental health it is equally as important as looking after our physical health. I look forward to working with the staff, parents and young people of Cornwallis Academy.

e-bulletin Friday 15th July

Waddington day 108 Well for me it’s 114 days for most of you it will be 108 days.

Normally at this time of year I’d be getting excited along with the rest of you, we’d be chatting about what we will be doing, where we will be going for the summer holidays, making plans packing cases, shopping for new flip flops and generally winding down.

Students would be getting livelier as the end date nears and we would be trying to keep you focused. However not this year, this year everything has changed………………………

My hair is so long now I feel like I should be living with a Neanderthal man. Make up, Nah don’t bother with that any more I haven’t worn it for so long I think I’ll need lessons on how to wear it. My mascara has dried up and been re housed in the bin.

I haven’t bought clothes for an eternity and my daily wardrobe are shorts and t shirt. Jeans and t shirt, flip flops and trainers. My “going out” clothes are feeding the local moths and I feel like they will never be worn again.

I’m starting to build a strong bond with the family of spiders that are still living around the wing mirrors of my car, they now have children of their own and possibly some grandchildren, I feel bad about taking them out as anything over 40 miles an hour will be like g force to them.

Instead of getting excited about packing cases I’m getting excited about my first crop of spinach, the taste of my fresh cucumbers and the sweetness of home-grown tomatoes, I’m proud of my newfound green fingers.

Things are starting to change and along with that change comes new anxieties. Going out, the most noticeable thing is the amount of people with masks on, a sight we would never have seen unless you travelled to foreign countries. Lines mark the floors in all shops, screens are up in front of cashiers and people noticeable take a step back when starting a conversation.

These things are now becoming normal to most of us and no longer cause us any concern.

When we return to school in September there will also be a lot of new ways of working, socialising, learning, that we need to get used to and I’m sure many of you are a little anxious about these, as am I. However, they will very quickly become normal to all of us and hopefully these changes will make us be more considerate and look out for each other.

If there is one thing that Lockdown has taught me, it is that material things really are not that important. Tell me ‘has the world stopped turning because you haven’t had your nails done? Do people recoil in horror because your eyebrows are not perfect? What is important is family, friends, kindness, good health and happiness.

I try to look for a positive even in the worst of times and for me this is, how privileged we have been to be able to spend so much time with our loved ones, I don’t think ever again in our lifetime will we be given that much precious time .I hope you have used it well and will cherish it.

So even though this summer holiday is going to feel a little different to most, try to enjoy it. Stay alert, stay safe and I genuinely look forward to seeing you all in September.
