Men's Basketball the First Organized Sport at Youngstown College Was the Men's Basketball Program. the Penguins Began Play I Men’s Basketball The first organized sport at Youngstown College was the men’s basketball program. The Penguins began play in 1927-28 under the direction of Al Fairfield. YSU has played every season since, except for three years during World War II. The name associated most with Youngstown State basketball is Dom Rosselli. Rosselli coached the Penguins for 39 years and ended his career with a 589-388 record. Under Rosselli, YSU reached the NAIA National Tournament three times. In school history there have been 12 head coaches, including current coach Jerry Slocum. The Penguins have more than 900 victories in school history. The program achieved Division I status in 1981-82 when it joined the Ohio Valley Conference. In 1992-93 YSU began play in the Mid-Continent Conference playing in the league through the 2000-01 season. In 2001-02, the Penguins joined the Horizon League. YSU has twice been just one win shy of making the NCAA Division I Tournament reaching the finals of the Ohio Valley Tournament in 1985 and the finals of the Mid-Con Tournament in 1998 . The men’s basketball program was involved in NAIA competition until 1959-60 before becoming a Division II member prior to the 1960-61 campaign (until 1980-81). As a Division II member, YSU competed in nine NCAA Regional Tournaments reaching the finals in 1972. In NAIA action, Youngstown College appeared in four National Tournaments (1947, 1957, 1958, 1959). The furthest the Penguins advanced was in 1957 and 1958 when they reached the Elite Eight. Prepared by YSU Sports Information Director Trevor Parks See detailed history starting below on page 2. • Ali-Foreman Preview by Jerry Quarry; Quarry Vs. Joe Alexander Recap
J EORGE FOREMAN WILL knock out Muham G mad Ali at least the fourth roun~, -if not earlier, This is the way I see that fight going. I see- Foreman coming out a little cautious to begin with. trying to see what kind of power Ali might hav-e. Ali will he moving and moving constantly. both left and right throwing his left jab to let Foreman know that it's there. to let him know he's going to have trouble with that jab. I see Foreman. still cautious. moving forward behind a left jab of his own. And he has a very good one. He'll try to unload a few of his rights to the body, trying to show disdain for both Ali's punching power and his · boxing ability. · The first round will go more or less- to Ali because of his boxing ability and his moving. Foreman will spend the round. like he did in the Norton fight trying to learn exactly what the other guy has. Ali's jab will he some what effective. I don't think he'll have problems with Foreman's reach. hut I believe it'll he a defensive jab, 1 thrown while moving. intended to prevent Foreman f~om getting a clean shot at him. It'll he used strictly to keep Foreman off of him. At the beginning of the second round. Foreman. showing complete disdain for Ali's power. will begin to work on him. He'll be pushing him to the ropes. It'll look like he's fighting like an amateur because he'll start throwing those heavy.

  • 2020 Umpire Manual
UMPIRE MANUAL LETTER FROM THE USA SOFTBALL NATIONAL OFFICE USA Softball Umpires We want to welcome you to the 2020 Softball Season. Thank you for being a USA Softball Umpire as it is because of you we continue to have the best dressed, best trained and dedi- cated umpires in the country. Without all of you we could not continue to make the umpire program better every year. From those who umpire USA Softball league softball night in and night out, those who represent us on the National Stage and those who umpire on the World Stage you are the ones that show everyone we are the best umpires in the world of Softball. We continue to look at ways to help our program get better every year. We have a new agenda for the USA Softball National Umpire Schools that is working well. We have also revamped the Fast Pitch Camps and Slow Pitch Camps, to be more advanced in techniques and philosophies targeted to those umpires who want to take the next step in their umpire career. We have established a new committee to revamp the Slow Pitch Camp agenda to make it centered around the areas of Slow Pitch Softball that need the most attention. As our upper level Slow Pitch opportunities grow, we must design a camp around working that upper level while still helping the umpires trying to get to that level. This is the third year for the umpire manual to be in electronic form posted on the web. It is also available with the rule book app that is updated every year.

With 12 NCAA Tournament berths in the last 14 seasons, seven Sweet Sixteen appearances, a pair of consecutive Final Four showings, and the 2002 national championship – the first of its kind in Maryland basketball history – Williams and his staff have literally forged what is now more than a decade of dominance in college basketball’s most storied and competitive conference. Now, with 378 victories as Maryland’s head coach, Williams is the school’s Terrapins all-time winningest head coach, eclipsing the mark of former Terp mentor Charles “Lefty” Driesell, who amassed 348 victories in 17 seasons from 1969-70 to 1985-86. The Terrapins have averaged 23.0 wins per year since the 1994-95 season. With 585 career victories in 29 seasons overall, Williams is the seventh-winningest active head coach in NCAA Division I men’s basketball. Williams was heralded as the national and ACC Coach of the Year during the Terps’ 2002 championship run. He is one of just 12 active coaches in America to boast a national title and one of only three in the conference. He has become the third-winningest coach in ACC history after transforming the Maryland program into one of the nation’s most formidable, and building a Baltimore-D.C.
