We continue to look at ways to help our program get better every year. We have a new agenda for the USA Softball National Umpire Schools that is working well. We have also revamped the Fast Pitch Camps and Slow Pitch Camps, to be more advanced in techniques and philosophies targeted to those umpires who want to take the next step in their umpire career. We have established a new committee to revamp the Slow Pitch Camp agenda to make it centered around the areas of Slow Pitch Softball that need the most attention. As our upper level Slow Pitch opportunities grow, we must design a camp around working that upper level while still helping the umpires trying to get to that level. This is the third year for the umpire manual to be in electronic form posted on the web. It is also available with the rule book app that is updated every year.

Rust, E. W. Morgan, and A. H. Stewart, present live games remotely. One sends plays from ballpark, second receives and announces, third moves cards with players’ names around backdrop. Starting in Nashville’s 900-seat Masonic Theater, they soon move to 2,500-seat Grand Opera House, beginning half-century of remote baseball game viewing at opera houses (also Augusta, GA Grand Opera House starting 1885). 1885 : The Black Hussar is probably 1 st opera with baseball mentioned in its libretto (in “Read the answer in the stars”).

(1 folder). Abstract: Harold J. Dorn, a Madison, Wisconsin native, discusses his World War II service as a hospital corpsman serving at Navy bases in Idaho and California. Dorn talks about growing up in Madison during the Great Depression, being rejected from military service due to a hernia, and undergoing surgery to correct the problem. Drafted in 1943, he touches upon volunteering for the Marines, being assigned to the Navy, boot camp at Great Lakes (Illinois), and hospital corpsman school. Assigned to a Farragut Naval Training Station (Idaho), Dorn comments on work in a rheumatic fever ward, assignment to the prosthesis lab in the Dental Division, and duty as a dental hygienist. He speaks of playing for the Dental Division’s baseball team and names some professional baseball players he played with: Fred Hutchinson and Dick Bartell. Dorn states he also played some football on base. He mentions deer hunting for recreation and having liberty in Spokane. Dorn touches upon his 1944 transfer to the Naval base at Shoemaker (California) and his duties as a dental hygienist and later as pharmacists mate processing those headed to the Pacific theater. He addresses doing part-time work off base while on liberty.
