Twenty-eight years ago Golden and Wasil (1987) presented the use of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for ranking outstanding sports records. Since then much has changed with respect to sports and sports records, the application and theory of the AHP, and the availability of the internet for accessing data. In this paper we revisit the ranking of outstanding sports records and build on past work, focusing on a comprehensive set of records from the four major American professional sports. We interviewed and corresponded with two sports experts and applied an AHP-based approach that features both the traditional pairwise comparison and the AHP rating method to elicit the necessary judgments from these experts. The most outstanding sports records are presented, discussed and compared to Golden and Wasil’s results from a quarter century earlier. • A National Tradition
Baseball A National Tradition. by Phyllis McIntosh. “As American as baseball and apple pie” is a phrase Americans use to describe any ultimate symbol of life and culture in the United States. Baseball, long dubbed the national pastime, is such a symbol. It is first and foremost a beloved game played at some level in virtually every American town, on dusty sandlots and in gleaming billion-dollar stadiums. But it is also a cultural phenom- enon that has provided a host of colorful characters and cherished traditions. Most Americans can sing at least a few lines of the song “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” Generations of children have collected baseball cards with players’ pictures and statistics, the most valuable of which are now worth several million dollars. More than any other sport, baseball has reflected the best and worst of American society. Today, it also mirrors the nation’s increasing diversity, as countries that have embraced America’s favorite sport now send some of their best players to compete in the “big leagues” in the United States. Baseball is played on a Baseball’s Origins: after hitting a ball with a stick. The Strat-O-Matic Game Co. won't be putting out six Old-Timer baseball teams from the period 1920-1939. Now the good news. Instead, it will be putting out eight Old-Timer teams From that period! Because the recent poll conducted in the Review showed a heavy concentrat- ion of votes for two New York Yankee teams (1921 and 1936) and because, after the first three teams, the voting was extremely close, S-O-M creator Harold Richman has decided on eight teams instead of the planned six. When the Review editors last talked with the game company, Richman was researching the eight teams and prepar.ing Fielding and running ratings. The newest set of Old-Timer teams will be available when the 1976 baseball cards come out in the early spring. Now, which eight teams will be added to the growing list of Old-Timer card sets already available? Here are the eight that the readers picked via the poll and the percentage (out of 90 votes) that each received: 1. 1934 Detroit Tigers - 72.2%. 2. 1927 Pittsburgh Pirates - 55.6%. 5. (tie) 1936 New York Yankees, 3. 1929 Chicago Cubs - 53.3% 40%. 4. 1921 New York Yankees - 42.2%.

STRAT-O-MATIC Yp/~f REVIEW [\ Devoted excluslvely to the ~~ Strat-O-Matlc game fans, wlth ~ the consent of the Strat-O-Matic Game Co. I Vol. II-4 J1.ll1e1972 35¢ l Everything But Color Socks Included In Baseball Yearbook If the lights in a particular trailer in Beelman's Trailer Court, Luverne, JON, seem to burn late into the night, there's good reason for it; resident SOM baseball player Gregg Gropel is probably putting another page of statistics together to add to one of the most comprehensive "league books" ever seen. Gropel, you see, is a member of a six-manager SOM baseball league in which player cards from both leagues were drafted and a 162-game season r1.ll1 off. Nothing 1.ll1usual,perhaps, but the set of statistics turned out at season's end is definitely out of the ordinary. The league itself was divided into two divisions, South and North, based on the 1970 player cards, with the winning teams in each division meeting in a post-season world series to determine the overall champion. Teams could be composed of any number of players at draft time, but the roster had to be reduced to 25 after 20 games. Extra players were thus the "Farm Club" and still the manager's property. These players, in addition, could be added to the regular roster by paying ten cents into a league kitty and dropping another player to the "Farm Club." Players would belong to the manager the following season as well, 'with a reverse-order-of-finish draft held of the new players.
