ENVIRONMENT SCAN – 20 JUL 2015 CHINA Col C Madhwal, VSM China has Urged the Philippines to Remove a Ship which Serves as a Military Outpost in the Disputed South China Sea. Filipino soldiers wave from the dilapidated Sierra Madre ship of the Philippine Navy as it is anchored near Ayungin shoal (Second Thomas Shoal) in the Spratly group of islands in the South China Sea, west of Palawan, Philippines China on Wednesday condemned the Philippines for doing repairs to a rusting ship it ran aground on a South China Sea reef, demanding Manila remove the vessel while adding that Beijing "reserved the right to take further measures". The Foreign Ministry did not elaborate on those measures in a statement that called Manila the "real regional trouble maker" for reinforcing the ship, which has sat on Second Thomas Shoal since 1999. The wording of the warning mirrors what China has said in the past when it's particularly angry with other countries. The Philippine navy had been using wooden fishing boats and other small craft to move cement, steel and welding equipment to the BRP Sierra Madre since late last year for repair work aimed at stopping the ship from breaking apart. Manila regards Second Thomas Shoal, which lies 105 nautical miles (195 km) southwest of the Philippine region of Palawan, as being within its 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone. The Russian hip hop scene is extremely racist. It’s being led by racists like @sdthaking and i1official (@Talib Kweli 2020)1 The above tweet was posted at the end of February 2020 in the middle of a heated Twitter controversy between famous us rapper Talib Kweli and the Russian hip-hop community, in which he described the en- tire Russian rap scene as racist, Nazi and state sponsored.2 Thе scandal quickly spread to other social media platforms and got extensive cover- age online and even on the official Russian tv channels. Anastasia Afonina ‘The Popular Culture of Criminality’ VAV3, Gerrit Rietveld Academie As fashion evolved throughout times, we moved from long gowns into mini skirts in less than a century. At the beginning of 2000s we were hypnotized by the Paris Hilton’s glamor- ous pink and disgusted by the unsatisfactory living conditions of people labeled as a ‘lower class’. From what I see we can develop even faster. We can be even more radical. My research is about a modern popular culture and, in particular, the active exploitation of criminal aesthetics in the different forms of art, such as music, fashion, cinema, etc. My curi- osity is built around an observation that just recently people that we would call ‘upper-middle class’ were often trying to ignore the presence of some particular urban areas known as ‘ghetto’ and its unsatisfactory social conditions that meanwhile developed in its individual culture. This lifestyle, fashion, music, slang, etc, was not highly appreciated by the other so- cial classes. Yet now, what was considered as ‘bad taste’ ten years ago has a huge impact on contemporary art and media. Therefore, I am curious about the reason of a rapidly growing interest and the frequent use of the ghetto culture that became the new popular culture nowadays. I find it interesting, how those two different things - propaganda and a popular culture - can be so interconnected the way they affect each other. -

ABSTRACT The South China Sea dispute is a story of action and reaction. Ever since the Philippine government initiated arbitration under the compulsory dispute settlement provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, China has been behaving in a manner that has unsettled its neighbors and has practically guaranteed the continued volatility of the region. This research steps into this scenario and explores two questions: “What can escalate tensions in the South China Sea to the point of all-out war?” and “How can such an escalation be avoided or mitigated?” The complexity of the situation means that there are no straightforward answers to these questions. This research thus chose to approach the first question by limiting itself to a discussion of two broad categories of China’s escalatory actions: (1) instrumental escalations (e.g. China’s artificial island-building and possible declaration of an Air Defense Identification Zone), and (2) suggestive escalations (e.g. China’s engagement in a spectrum of threats against other South China Sea stakeholders and its conduct of enforcement activities in disputed areas). It asserts that instrumental escalatory acts invite “push back” from other countries, increasing the possibility of misperception and miscalculation during confrontations in disputed areas. -

The Republic of the Philippines and U.S. Interests—2014 Thomas Lum Specialist in Asian Affairs Ben Dolven Specialist in Asian Affairs May 15, 2014 Congressional Research Service 7-5700 www.crs.gov R43498 The Republic of the Philippines and U.S. Interests—2014 Summary The United States and the Republic of the Philippines maintain close ties stemming from the U.S. colonial period (1898-1946), the bilateral security alliance bound by the Mutual Defense Treaty of 1951, and common strategic and economic interests. In the past decade, the Philippines has been one of the largest recipients of U.S. foreign assistance in Southeast Asia, including both military and development aid. Many observers say that U.S. public and private support to the Philippines following Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), which struck the central part of the country on November 8, 2013, bolstered the already strong bilateral relationship. Although the United States closed its military bases in the Philippines in 1992, the two sides have maintained security cooperation. Joint counterterrorism efforts, in which U.S. forces play a non- combat role, have helped to reduce Islamist terrorist threats in Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago in the southern Philippines. During the past year, Washington and Manila have held discussions on the framework for an increased, non-permanent U.S. military presence in the Philippines. Since 2012, the Philippines has played a key role in the Obama Administration’s “rebalancing” of foreign policy priorities to Asia, particularly as maritime territorial disputes between China and other claimants in the South China Sea have intensified. Birds of Paradise Theatre Company Annual Report 2015 - 2016 Organisational Staffing The staff team of Garry Robson, Robert Softley Gale and Shona Rattray had been leading the organisation since November 2013. In July of 2015 Shona left the company to pursue exciting freelance opportunities and so Garry and Robert became joint Artistic Directors and Chief Executive Officers. Following a period of internal review, we advertised for a new Access & Finance Administrator. We were delighted to appoint Karen Forbes to this role in November 2015. Rotation of Board Members Our previous Chair, Liam Sinclair, resigned from our Board of Directors in July 2015 after giving nine great years of service to the company. Marianne Maxwell and Graham Main, two excellent co-chairs, oversaw the BOP Board through a transitional period whilst new members and a new chair are being recruited. Long time treasurer Simon Hodgson remained on the board with Marianne and Graham. Page 2 of 7 Projects Looking 4 Talent Looking 4 Talent saw BOP travel across the country searching for emerging deaf and disabled talent, auditioning over 50 people. A number of those auditioned were then invited to a day-long audition workshop at Scottish Youth Theatre and subsequently six people were invited to take part in L4T Intensive, a two-week development process in October held with the support of Summerhall, Edinburgh. We worked with this group on developing a new version of a seminal show in the history of disability art ‘The Last Freakshow’ by Mike Kenny. This was performed to an enthusiastic full house at Summerhall on Friday 16th October. -

In 2002 he received a PhD from the National University of Singapore based on his excavation of the 10th century Intan Wreck in Indonesia. His thesis was published as a book by the British Archaeological Report Series (2002).
