The world record of 414.316 mph, at the time, represented the fastest record for a single engined car. The car was named in memory of Charlie’s son Rett. Charles Nearburg and the team with the Spirit of Rett LAND SPEED RECORD SETTER... Q. Your best day in motor racing? "Probably my first professional podium. That came on the Mile Oval at Nazareth in the Bosch Super Vee championship. I finished second that day in a really challenging race. And, of course, setting the big FIA Land Speed Record in 2011 at Bonneville was epic. The record we broke had been on the books for 45 years! The Spirit of Rett Streamliner still holds the fastest FIA normally aspirated record in history at 414mph, with a top speed of 422mph." Q. And your worst? "A Player’s Toyota Atlantic Championship test day on the Phoenix International Speedway one-mile oval in a Swift DB4. I was trading fastest time all day with Jimmy Vasser and then, as I was told later, I hit the wall in Turn 2 at about 160mph and was helicoptered to the hospital. I woke up the next morning wondering where the hell I was… I didn’t break anything, but the Swift’s supertough kevlar aluminium honeycomb tub was fully broken. I was so sore all over that I could barely move for three days and had to stay close to the hospital in Phoenix." In 1997 Charles raced in The 24 Hours of Le Mans. With a passion for racing and special cars, Charles now races a collection of endurance and single seater racing cars - you'll only see the truest racing icons in his collection! Charles Nearburg in the Williams FW07 Q. You’ve raced at Le Mans, in Champ Cars and in Toyota Atlantic, and also set a land speed record ten years ago. How did the switch to historic racing come about? "I didn’t have the time or desire to do a full series anymore, but I still wanted to go racing. I’ve always had a huge appreciation of the history of motorsports, and it’s a great opportunity to race the cars you grew up with and always dreamed of racing." Q. Can you remember your first-ever Masters event? "Before Ron bought that US series I did quite a lot of successful racing with Historic Grand Prix with my ex-Alan Jones Williams FW07B. In Europe I had a March 761B and I think it was a Masters European meeting in 2011. We had an engine problem in the March 761, so I wasn’t even able to finish the second practice session. Not fun! It was balanced out by a podium in my Lola T212 sports car though!" Born in Dallas, Nearburg founded Nearburg Exploration, an oil and gas exploration firm as well as enjoying a successful auto racing career where he became a long time Toyota Atlantic competitor and even worked with Ron Tauranac, the co- founder of Brabham! Charles Nearburg in the Williams FW07 Q. Are you in it to win it – or is the win just a bonus to the fun? "Oh, I like to win races! I’ve won races on both sides of the ‘Pond’. I’ve had a second, a third, and two fourths at Monaco in three different historic formula one classes. Having fun and feeling like I have driven well are important to me. There are situations now where I temper my aggressiveness. I saw Clay Regazzoni get paralysed in his crash at Long Beach, so I know how fragile these cars are." Q. Best car you ever drove? "That’s probably my Ralt RT40 Toyota Atlantic car. I got to work with Ron Tauranac in developing the car for Ralt America. Ron measured me before he designed the tub so that my 6’3” body was actually comfortable; quite a change from the DB4. He was tough, but I learned a lot being around him as we tested the car. That was a great experience." No doubt, there will be some new ones added on to this year's racing schedule! Charles Nearburg takes the Number 1 spot on the podium - at Circuit of The Americas in 2016 DRIVING A TITLE WINNING MACHINE... Q. Your favourite circuit? "I cannot name just one. In the States – Laguna Seca and Circuit Of The Americas. In the UK and Europe it is the Brands Hatch GP circuit and Mugello." Q. Why doesn’t Masters go to… "Mugello for sure! And in the States maybe the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course – that’s a really great circuit." Q. You bought the car that Nick Padmore used to win the 2018 FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship. What’s it like to drive a title-winning machine? "Obviously, it is a really well set up car. My first weekend in it I had a good run in the second race at Paul Ricard. I took the car back to the States to drive it at COTA last November and will race it in the States next year. The plan is to come back to the UK in 2021 and race it there in Europe." Winchester MG Owners Club May 2016 www.winchestermgoc.co.uk April was a busy month with plenty of events to attend. We did Winchester MGOC reasonably well in the ‘MG Drive’ against Newbury and Basingstoke Chat www.winchestermgoc.co.uk coming in at a creditable second place. We certainly did well to follow the complex and ever varying rules (most of the time) and it was a surprise to discover just how competitive rolling a dice can Your Committee be. Woe betide anyone who spent a fraction of a second too long Secretary Steve Favell [email protected] shaking or even worse managed to lose the dice on the floor. Speed was the key. It was amazing that having taken so long to throw a six, Treasurer Clyde Cunningham [email protected] or any other number that was needed, subsequent throws would Programme Steve Favell [email protected] produce the same number over and over again when not needed. Such is life. It was an enjoyable evening, well organised and arranged Programme Andy Young [email protected] to ensure a good mixing of contestants. Individual round winners Regalia Niall Fitzgerald [email protected] proudly wore their ‘medals’ and there were trophies for the winning team (Basingstoke) and individual highest scorers. Cobweb Spin Hank Dawson [email protected] Several members made it along to the Arundel Castle picnic which Newsletter Dave Tilbury [email protected] once again managed to enjoy the best weather of what had otherwise been a variable month. Contents: Page The Shamrock Quay BBQ held on the same day saw a good turn-out of all types and seems to be well on the way to establishing itself as Chat 3 a regular venue in much the same way as the Alton ‘Crotch Cooler’.

Simona de Silvestro January 9, 1988 - Present Nationality: Swiss and Italian Raced: 1998 - Present Background: Simona de Silvestro was born in Thun, Switzerland in 1988. Her interest in motor sports began early in her life and by age ten she was already racing competitively. She participated in the Western Switzerland Championship in 1998, 1999, and 2000, and spent her next few years kart-racing throughout Europe and competing in the Italian Formula Renault 2000 series. De Silvestro moved to the United States in 2006 to pursue her racing career and she made history that year by becoming the first woman to earn a podium result at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Walker Racing signed her to their team in November 2006, and in April 2007 she began her rookie year racing in the Atlantic Championship, America's top open-wheel driver development series. She joined Newman Wachs Racing in 2008, and earned her first victory in the series. De Silvestro spent the 2009 season racing with Team Stargate Worlds. With four wins, she was point leader throughout much of the year and came very close to winning the Atlantic Championship title. She was knocked out of the running on October 11th after her car tangled with Markus Niemela’s at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Had she won the title, she would have become the first woman to do so in the Atlantic Championship’s 36-year history. Early Influences: De Silvestro has always had the desire to race. Her passion for the sport can be attributed to her father’s love of it.

  • Fia Driver Categorisations Regulations
FIA DRIVER CATEGORISATIONS REGULATIONS 1 GENERAL PRINCIPLES An FIA Driver Categorisation list has replaced the former FIA WEC and FIA GT3 lists from 2015 onwards. The FIA Driver Categorisations are determined by the decisions taken by the FIA Driver Categorisation Committee members. The Committee consists of representatives of the main series that use the Categorisations, who are advised by members of the FIA Drivers’ Commission, and assisted by the FIA Administration. The FIA Driver Categorisation is the basis for all FIA Championships that use a driver system, and can be adopted by any series, which are free to make any modifications they wish (as long as these are clearly visible). A national series may use the FIA Driver Categorisation system. 1.1 The "bronze", "silver", "gold" and "platinum" designations are "FIA copyright". If a championship does not use the FIA Driver Categorisation, it cannot use these designations as they are to describe the categorisation of drivers. 1.2 Any series that will be using the FIA Driver Categorisation must include in their regulations a provision specifying that they will refer to this categorisation system. 1.3 All International series shall declare their use of the FIA Driver Categorisation system when registering their Series with the FIA. 1.4 Any other series shall make an official statement to the FIA Driver Categorisation Committee to confirm that they will be using the FIA Driver Categorisation system. They should provide the contact information of a person who will be able to provide good advice about the series, the races and the drivers taking part.

  • Ralt, for the Last Few Years Has Only Been Involved in Racing in the U.S.A
Ralt, for the last few years has only been involved in racing in the U.S.A. After winning the Toyota Atlantic Championship for what must be the 12th or 13th time since the series started, they were faced with major changes which made Atlantic a Spec.Series for the Swift marque. In the ‘80’s and early ‘90’s Ralt dominated F3. After an absence of 6 years the FIA Regulation changes for1999 seemed like the right time to re-enter the world of Formula 3, especially now the series is starting in the U.S.A. A 40% scale model was made and testing at the MIRA Wind-tunnel facility began. Once the prototype car was built, tests were carried out and windtunnel figures verified showing the accuracy of the MIRA facility and the model against the full size car. Ongoing testing has been carried out throughout 1998/9. A carbon fibre monocoque, some 50% stiffer than the Ralt Atlantic car has been made, incorporating all latest FIA safety requirements around the cockpit area. The 1999/2000/2001 car features a new transmission designed by Ralt. Gearboxes are an area, which have remained virtually unchanged for the last 20 years, and this situation has been addressed resulting in a lightweight, super stiff, ultra small casing fitted with purpose designed 10mm wide gears and bigger gear centre distance. A smaller, lighter LSD unit has been utilized with 130mm diameter crown wheel again specifically designed for this application. Driveshafts are horizontal so there is no power loss through the normally acute angled tripod joints associated with a normal F3 installation.
