  • Inclusive and Participative Decision Making for Improving Environmental Performances in Football Stadiums: Brussels’ Roi Baudouin Stadium Study Case
Inclusive and Participative Decision Making for Improving Environmental Performances in Football Stadiums: Brussels’ Roi Baudouin stadium study case Abstract The last several years have seen a never larger interest in climate change and its consequences. This phenomenon is going beyond any generational, gender, national or any other barriers. In fact, this concern became a cross-industrial, cross-sectoral and cross-institutional involving a large number of different individual entities acting together, reviewing and assessing their environmental practices. The world of sports was not left out either. We can see a number of initiatives emerging alongside with other socially-responsible ones, such as those aiming at eradicating racism in sporting events, enhancing fair play and keep sports clean of drugs and other forbidden substances. One of them is a pan-European project, supported by UEFA, which includes 10 pilot football stadiums and is aiming at improving environmental performances in them. Football stadiums can be easily aggregated to small and medium sized towns considering their capacities. Therefore, a football game could easily result in environmental impacts similar to those such cities have at the end of a day. As a match day is much more than the 90 minutes of game play improvements in environmental performances concern a wide range of stakeholders from food and beverage providers, local administration, waste management companies to the game host and event organiser itself. This paper reports on a successful case study of Roi Baudouin stadium in Brussels, presents findings and data on key environmental indicators and analyses the involvement of local stakeholders in improving them.

  • Press Release: King Baudouin Stadium No
PRESS RELEASE King Baudouin Stadium no realistic alternative for UEFA EURO 2020 The Stadium Consultancy has executed a study to determine if and to which extent the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels is compliant with the requirements for the UEFA EURO 2020 tournament. The study is part of a broader research study for spectator comfort & services, hospitality concepts, fan experience and fan engagement in football stadiums, commissioned by the Ghelamco Group. As part of the study a full compliance check of the King Baudouin Stadium against the UEFA EURO 2020 Tournament Requirements as well as the contractual commitments made by the Royal Belgian Football Association (KBVB), the city of Brussels and the Brussels Capital Region, has been executed. Based on the outcome of this compliance check, various options and solutions to make the King Baudouin Stadium compliant with the requirements for the EURO 2020, have been explored. At present, none of the available seats for the general spectators, corporate hospitality guests and VIP in the King Baudouin Stadium complies with the UEFA EURO 2020 Tournament Requirements. Not only do none of the seats offer the required comfort and leg space but out of the 50,093 seats approximately only 16,500 can be used for commercial purposes during the Tournament. Main reason is that the majority of the seats in the first tier of the stadium does not have a clear and unobstructed view of the entire field of play. Moreover, the stadium lacks a proper seating area and lounge for VIP, which meets UEFA standards. The stadium offers none of the required 80 skyboxes with in total 800 seats.
