Previous meetings • CSKA were already eliminated when they hosted Bayern on 27 November last year and Bayern's 3-1 victory secured a record tenth successive victory in the UEFA Champions League. They had previously defeated CSKA 3-0 in Munich. • The lineups at the Arena Khimki were: CSKA: Akinfeev, Nababkin, A Berezutski, Ignashevich, Schennikov, Milanov (Vitinho 90), Wernbloom, Tošić, Honda, Zuber (Elm 68), Musa (Bazelyuk 80). Their only defeat was at FC Zenit (0-4) in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup semi-finals. The next season he featured in a 5-1 group stage victory at home against Spartak. • Xabi Alonso got the better of CSKA in the 2011/12 group stage with Real Madrid CF (1-1 a, 4-1 h) and with Liverpool (3-1) in the 2005 UEFA Super Cup. Next it will be the turn of the youth players in both the men’s (Under-17 and Under-19) and women’s categories (Under-19) to compete for European honours from May to July, when the final rounds of their European champion- ships will be taking place. At senior level, however, the players only have European club competition medals to contend for this year. The national teams are not dormant though. At the end of March, the UEFA EURO 2004 qualifiers move into their criti- cal phase and, come autumn, the 15 teams who will join hosts Portugal in the final round next year will be known. There could be a lot of drama to come. I am happy to report that with UEFA EURO 2004 only 15 months away, preparations are well advanced, and EURO 2004, SA, the joint operation set up by UEFA and the Portuguese Football Federation, is running at full speed.

Hamburger SV v Viking FK PRESS KIT AOL Arena, Hamburg Thursday, 3 November 2005 - 18:30 local time Group A - Matchday 2 Something has to give at the AOL Arena as the two Group A winners from Matchday 1 meet looking to maintain perfect starts. Hamburger SV won their opening game 1-0 at PFC CSKA Sofia thanks to a Rafael van der Vaart goal, while Viking FK secured a fine home win against the 2004 UEFA Champions League finalists AS Monaco FC, Nkosinathi Nhleko scoring the only goal in another 1-0 success. •Despite beginning their European adventure in the 1960/61 season, Hamburg now face Norwegian opposition for the first time. The Bundesliga club (who qualified for this competition as one of the three UEFA Intertoto Cup winners along with RC Lens and Olympique de Marseille), are looking to complete a quartet of European trophies. •Hamburg have also won the 1976/77 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the 1982/83 European Champion Clubs' Cup. •However, they were beaten 1-0 by Nottingham Forest FC in the 1979/80 European Cup final and lost 2-0 to AC Milan in the 1967/68 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final. The German side completed a hat-trick of losing major finals when they lost to IFK Göteborg in the 1981/82 UEFA Cup final, 4-0 on aggregate. •Viking have met German clubs in five previous ties in UEFA competition, and have come out on top only once, against 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, now VfB Leipzig but then of the East German league, with a win on away goals in the 1982/83 UEFA Cup first round.

What happened on 29 May 1985 at the Heysel stadium in Brussels was the darkest hour in the history of the UEFA competitions. Disaster struck the final of the Champion Clubs’ Cup between Juventus and Liverpool before a ball had even been kicked, leaving 39 spectators dead and injuring many more during what should have been a celebration of football. Whilst this tragedy could have called into question the future of the major European football competitions, particularly the Champion Clubs’ Cup, it soon became clear that defeatism was not the best way to pay tribute to the victims.
