With a cover theme so close to her heart, Kayansel included objects that inspire the artist in her Alumni Journal published periodically by the illustration. There is RC Development Office for approximately also a nod to a beloved 10,000 members of the RC community: art book taught at RC for many years. graduates, students, faculty, administration, parents and friends. As we reflect on 2020 with all the surprises and changes it brought, and move into 2021 with hope and resilience, the RC Quarterly’s 57th issue turns its focus to the fine arts. Indeed, is there a better source of reinvigoration and inspiration than art? This issue surveys how art was taught at RC and how it is evolving to provide students new skills, as well as presenting the illuminating perspectives that our alumni in the arts offer (p. 34). Can Göknil ACG 66 was kind enough to allow us to reprint one of her works as a In postcard insert for this issue, and we thank her for her generosity. Because the precautions around the pandemic continue, the RCQ reports on how Robert College is handling it all in the 2020-2021 school year (p. 10). Details are up this to date as we go to print, but please note they could change again by the time the issue magazine reaches you. The pandemic did not stop our alumni from receiving awards, writing books, and being in the news, and the RCQ proudly features many of their accomplishments. As always, we would love to hear from you. If you have any comments or would like to share news, please write us at [email protected] Here is to a wonderful 2021! Happy reading! • 2020 Campaign Case for Support
2020 Resiliency Campaign for York's Arts & Culture Throughout our long history, York has been an arts town. We're a community of makers, innovators, builders, and doers. York's resilience and success has always come from our ability to 'do what you can with what you have' and making things seemingly out of nothing. York is being tested by COVID-19. As we face the uncertainties of health and economic conditions in the coming months, we now have three months of data on the effects of the pandemic on our arts sector, and the indicators are alarming. 95% of our artists and arts organizations are currently projecting loss of income into mid-2021, and will be unable to serve thousands of people who depend on them due to enhanced safety protocols. Earned and contributed revenues for 2020 will be reduced by 50-85% due to social distancing and the economic recession. York County could lose $4.7 million of economic impact that our cultural community brings into our local shops, businesses, and neighborhoods. Our artists and creative organizations are resilient. They are demonstrating all of the qualities that we need right now: care for safety and health of our people, innovative programming, and hope for the future. The arts are helping us through it all, and are ready to lead the way in these uncertain times. But they need our financial support and advocacy. Our 2020 Annual Campaign will act as the COVID-19 Resiliency Campaign for the arts, raising much-needed operational dollars to help our cultural community weather the next 12-15 months of financial hardship.

Zéro Mani Soleymanlou Role Photo © Xavier Inchauspé The National Arts Centre (NAC) is Canada’s bilingual, multi-disciplinary home for the performing arts. The NAC presents, creates, produces and co-produces performing arts programming in various streams — the NAC Orchestra, Dance, English Theatre, French Theatre, Indigenous Theatre, and Popular Music and Variety — and nurtures the next generation of audiences and artists from across Canada. The NAC is located in the National Capital Region on the unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabe Nation Mandate The NAC is governed by the National Arts Centre Act, which defines its mandate as follows: to operate and maintain the Centre; to develop the performing arts in the National Capital Region; and to assist the Canada Council for the Arts in the development of the performing arts elsewhere in Canada. Accountability and Funding As a Crown Corporation, the NAC reports to Parliament through the Minister of Canadian Heritage. Of the NAC’s total revenue, less than half is derived from an annual Parliamentary appropriation, while more than half comes from earned revenue — box office sales, food and beverage services, parking services and hall rentals – and from the NAC Foundation. Each year, the Minister of Canadian Heritage tables the NAC annual report in Parliament. The Auditor General of Canada is the NAC’s external auditor. JOURNAL OF SOCIAL EDUCATION AND INTERDISCIPLINARY SCIENCE UNIVERSITY "FEHMI AGANI" GJAKOVA The Role of the Arts in Relations between Soviet Russia and the Republic of Turkey 1922-1944 Hasan KARACAN Cyprus Science University, Tourism Faculty, North Cyprus [email protected] Abstract: In the period of their modernization, the USSR (Soviet Russia) and the newly formed Republic of Turkey used cultural relations to promote good relations between their countries, which in our twenty-first century translates to the use of “soft power.” In the period of 1922 to 1944, cultural exchange translated to mutual help with shaping new cultures. An awareness of uses and necessary restrictions regarding propaganda would emerge. According to the correspondence between the wives of Soviet politician and educationalist Lev Borisovich Kamenev and Turkish president Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the Russian-Turkish exchange started with cinema and theater, and progressed with other forms of art, especially music. The introduction of Marxist literary theory from the Russian side would expand to a whole new aesthetic throughout continental Europe, and eventually go full circle back to the Middle East in the modern trend towards mainstream literature. Therefore, this particular correspondence documenting these first cultural exchanges is of great interest. The author of the article has worked from both Russian and Turkish records, translating for the benefit of our English readers. Keywords: Soviet Russia, Republic of Turkey, good relations, performing arts, soft power, Marxist literary theory 1. Introduction Olga Kameneva,1 the wife of the prominent Soviet politician Lev Borisovich Kamenev,2 who would later become the head of the VOKS organization (All-Union Society for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries) sent a letter to Mustafa Kemal Pasha's wife Latife Hanım on May 14, 1924;3 he gave her information about the arts and the situation of women in the Soviet Union.
