Home Education and Enrichment for K-12

The following was posted in a Facebook group: As an experienced homeschooler I want to let parents know that your elementary age child only needs 1-2 hours of school per day. Middle school is 2-3 hours and high schoolers 3-4 hours. PLEASE don't expect them to spend 6-8 hours of school per day. That is not how homeschooling works. There are MANY resources available to you, use them! ● Let them sleep in, it's good for their immune system. ● No need to get dressed. ● Talk to them about what they want to work on. ● Let them be part of the planning. ● Include 1 hour outside. Again, sun is good for the immune system. ● Spend 1 hour reading. ● Chore time. ● Cook something together. A LOT of homeschool math is done in the kitchen. ● This is a stressful time for all of us. Don't make it worse by stressing about school. ● Be gentle with your babies and yourselves. If it gets frustrating, walk away.

Emergency Preparedness And Response Stay Put - Learn How to Shelter in Place: emergency.cdc.gov/shelterinplace.asp

These are some basic things that you should have ready: ● Stock up on two weeks worth of water — 2 litres per person per day — and non-perishable food, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security suggests. ● Have two weeks worth of any prescription drugs you may need, as well as over-the-counter medication you will want to have with you in case you get sick like painkillers, fever-suppressors, cough syrup, and products that can settle your stomach. ● Other supplies like tissues, vitamins and fluids that will replenish your body with electrolytes are also recommended. ● Hand sanitizer with a 60 to 90 percent alcohol content (Also see When & How to Use Hand Sanitizer in Community Settings and How to Make Your Own Hand Sanitizer) ● Thermometer

N-95 respirator masks, gloves, goggles and water purification tablets are unnecessary. (A facemask doesn’t really protect a healthy person, and should only be worn by a sick person as recommended by their doctor.)

Have easy access to copies of your health records and prescriptions in case you need them, and will also be useful if you’re feeling ill and need to remotely contact your healthcare provider.

Scam Prevention Unfortunately, scammers are taking advantage of fears surrounding the coronavirus. The Federal Trade Commission (consumer.ftc.gov/features/coronavirus-scams-what-ftc-doing) has identified several of them and is offering tips to protect yourself and others. These include watching for emails claiming to be from the CDC saying they have information about the virus and ignoring online offers for vaccinations. There currently are no vaccines, pills, potions, lotions, lozenges, or other prescription or over-the- counter products available to treat or cure COVID-19 online or in stores.

If you receive an email asking you to donate to a nonprofit that is fighting the coronavirus, make sure to research the organization first through an independent charity rating service such as Charity Navigator: charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=content.view&cpid=7779.
