  • Kyle Barrett the Dark Knight’S Many Stories Arkham Video Games As Transmedia Pathway
Kyle Barrett The Dark Knight’s Many Stories Arkham Video Games as Transmedia Pathway Abstract This article examines the Batman Arkham video game series (Rocksteady/WB Montreal, 2009- 2015) as part of a wider transmedia franchise that encompasses comic books, films, merchandise and multiple animated and live-action television series. It will be posited that the video game series is a successful entry point for non-fans into this ever-expanding transmedia universe. Batman: Arkham Asylum (2009), the first of the series, was critically acclaimed and established the gameplay, mechanics, and rules for the sequels Arkham City (2011), Arkham Origins (2013) and Arkham Knight (2015). Gameplay mechanics are linked to ‘player agency,’ i.e. how the user controls the avatar within the game environment. Player agency is somewhat restricted in the series; however, this will be argued to be a benefit for audiences. There are somewhat ludic conditions that can either be beneficial or detrimental for the player, to ensure they learn from failure. This essay will further argue that players accumulate a wider understanding of the Batman universe by collecting artefacts as they deviate from the central narrative. The player unearths character biographies and interview tapes that are based on the character’s extensive history and, thus, provide a gateway into the transmedia world of Batman. Keywords: transmedia studies, video games, fan service, Batman, superhero franchises, agency ransmedia franchises run the risk of alienating a certain portion of audiences. Cinephiles, T for instance, may not want to read the source material, or play the video game spin-off of a film.

  • "Wally" Wingert (Born May 6, 1961) Is an American Actor and Voice Actor[1]
Wallace E. "Wally" Wingert (born May 6, 1961) is an American actor and voice actor[1] Born in Des Moines, Iowa and reared in the Great Plains of South Dakota, Wally developed a love for performing at an early age. From elementary school through High School, he kept busy writing, perfecting impersonations and developing a repertoire of characters and voices. Wally's childhood puppeteering experience helped land him an episodic role on CBS-TV's "Murphy Brown" in mid 1993. His performance as the irrepressible Kelbo was one of the most- seen "Murphy Brown" clips ever. All that time spent studying the Muppets’ characteristics, movements and voices during his childhood resulted in him landing a much-coveted SAG (Screen Actor’s Guild) union card. At the start of 1994, Wally was hired by Universal Studios Hollywood to portray Beetlejuice in the live stage-show Beetlejuice's Graveyard Revue," a job he enjoyed for four years. It was about this time that Wally got voice-work in such films as "Batman and Robin," TV shows like "The Fresh Prince," and animated shows like Nickelodeon's "Angry Beavers." Today, his body of work has become so vast he's considered one of the top talents in the voice-over industry. With appearances on shows like “Family Guy,” “King of the Hill,” “The Simpsons,” “Invader Zim,” “The Garfield Show,” “Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes,” “Bleach,” “Tiger and Bunny,” Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed,” “Astro Boy,” Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law,” “Rugrats,” “Transformers; Robots in Disguise,” and many other TV shows, movies and videogames, his vocal and acting abilities are constantly in demand.

  • Reflexive Ideology Through Spectacle-Violence
WITH GREAT POWER COMES NO RESPONSIBILITY: REFLEXIVE IDEOLOGY THROUGH SPECTACLE-VIOLENCE IN THE SUPERHERO FILMS OF MARVEL STUDIOS by Kevin Hatch B.A., Wilfrid Laurier University, 2012 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Film Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) June 2014 © Kevin Hatch, 2014 ! ""! Abstract! This work critically interrogates the superhero films of Marvel Studios and their textual treatment of, and the ideological function of, violent action spectacle. In Chapter One, I trace a chronology of superhero films and their corresponding treatment of violence, up to the onset of Marvel Studios, and the release of Jon Favreau’s Iron Man in 2008. I argue that Marvel superhero films respond to the genre’s previously tenuous treatment of spectacle-violence in the face of 9/11 and other instances of sociopolitical violence. Instead, Marvel Studios reappropriates action-violence interludes as ‘safe’ sites for audience enjoyment, undiminished by sociopolitical reflection. In doing so, Marvel crafts a brand identity of ‘reflexive wit,’ further integrating comedy into action sequences, and foregrounding provocative, yet superficial, sociopolitical commentary. In doing so, the Marvel films discourage audience preoccupation with the politics or ethical ramifications of spectacle violence. The films court the sense that, through such reflexivity, no further reflection is necessary, allowing audiences to unrepentantly enjoy the action violence. In Chapter Two, I explore the narrative techniques employed in Marvel films to foster viewer connection with their superheroes. I argue that the Marvel films draw upon a blend of comic book textual references, mythic intertexts, and pathos and humour, to court a dichotomy of ‘mythic accessibility,’ coding their heroes as sympathetic, valorized, sanctioned, ‘acceptable’ agents of violence.
