Aberdeen Public Schools Foundation, Inc. 1224 3rd Street South, Aberdeen, SD 57401 Phone: 605-725-7118 Fax: 605-725-7198 [email protected] www.aberdeen.k12.sd.us For immediate release 4/7/14 2014 CHS Hall of Fame Inductees Announced The Aberdeen Public Schools Foundation is proud to announce the Aberdeen Central High school Hall of Fame Class of 2014: Academics/Achievement Warren Evans – CHS Class of 1938 Evans enlisted in the military and signed up for the Darby’s Rangers, an elite fighting unit, which fought valiantly in North Africa and Italy during WWII. Wounded during the Anzio invasion and taken prisoner, Evans was sentenced to death as a spy, but escaped to freedom. He has been awarded the Purple Heart, Silver Star and three Presidential Citations for his exemplary service. Capt. Timothy B. Pence ‐ CHS Class of 1980 Pence is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy with a degree in Engineering, and several post graduate degrees. His distinguished career in Naval Intelligence includes serving as Senior Intelligence Officer on USS Abraham Lincoln. He is currently serving as Senior Intelligence Officer Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command in San Diego, California. Dr. Pauline Odessa Roberts – CHS Class of 1934 Dr. Roberts was a pioneer in the medical field as a minority woman. She earned her B.S. from University of Chicago, and her M.D. in 1943 from the University of Illinois. She worked for 14 years as a health officer for the City of Los Angeles and received numerous awards for her humanitarian work at home and overseas. Athletics Elyce (Iwerks) Kastigar – CHS Class of 1981 In addition to her outstanding CHS basketball and track and field careers, Kastigar was an accomplished swimmer, winning multiple state championships and setting numerous state records. She was selected as the 1980 SD High School Female Athlete of the Year. Kastigar was a Big Ten swimming champion for the University of Minnesota, and an All‐American in the sport. Kastigar is currently the head swimming and diving coach at Northern State University and has served as the head coach for the Aberdeen Swim Club since 1997. Eric Kline – CHS Class of 1991 During his tenure at Central, Kline was a three‐time All‐ESD, All‐State First Team, and the State AA All‐ Tournament Team in boys’ basketball. He was also the State AA boys’ 300 meter intermediate hurdle champion in track and field. Kline was also selected as Mr. Basketball for South Dakota, and the SD Gatorade Player of the Year his senior season. Albert “Al” Sahli – CHS Class of 1947 Sahli was an outstanding high school and college athlete in football, basketball, and track and field. He began teaching physical education and coaching football, basketball and boys’ track and field (head coach) in the Aberdeen Public Schools in 1957. In 1966, Sahli became the head cross country and track and field coach at Northern State College and also served as the head trainer for the Wolves. Sahli’s teams won numerous SDIC and NAIA District 12 championships, and he earned numerous accolades as a coach. Fine Arts Darryl Tonemah – CHS Class of 1984 In addition to his distinguished and successful careers as a singer/songwriter (8 albums), actor/producer of stage and screen, and author/publisher, Dr. Tonemah has also earned advanced degrees in Counseling and related fields. He sits on numerous state and national boards addressing disparities in education and health care among the Native Community; as well as the Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association. Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner – CHS Class of 1960 Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner, the executive director of the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation in Fayetteville, New York, is a nationally recognized lecturer, author and performance interpreter of woman’s rights history. Dr. Wagner has taught in women’s studies for forty‐three years. She currently serves as adjunct faculty in the Honors Program at Syracuse University. Wally Wingert – CHS Class of 1979 A successful actor and voice actor, Wingert was the announcer for the second incarnation of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and the current voice of Jon Arbuckle in The Garfield Show. He is also known for his role as one of The Almighty Tallest in Invader Zim (along with Kevin McDonald), Henry Pym from The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the Riddler from the Batman: Arkham video game series. Distinguished Service Award Fred Sahli – CHS 1937‐1963 Sahli held the position of Head Custodian for the Aberdeen Civic Arena and Theatre. His work ethic and dedication impacted all high school and Northern State University activities held in Civic Arena and Theatre, along with special events such as the Snow Queen Festival, Shrine Circus, and Paul Harvey’s and Jack Kennedy’s visits to Aberdeen. The CHS “Arrow” Yearbook dedicated their 1962 edition to him.
