8 McPherson College Basketball Media Guide 2010-11 McPherson College Basketball | 2010-2011 | Media Guide 2010-11 SEASON OUTLOOK The 2010-11 Bulldogs enter the season coming off a successful 2009-10 campaign that ended with the programs first trip to the NAIA Division II National Tournament. Despite last season’s success, many ques- tions revolve around Coach Swartzendruber’s team. McPherson graduated seven seniors a year ago, including three all-conference selections and one Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete.

McPherson will look to a talented group of 13 newcomers, including six junior college transfers to bolster a lineup centered around the handful of returning Bulldogs.

Junior guard Aaron Frazier proved last year to be a force on the offensive and defensive end. The hon- orable mention all-conference selection ranked fourth on the team with279 points (9.6 per game), while ranking second on the squad in assists (80) and steals (41). He played in all 29 games, including 10 starts. In the Bulldogs NAIA national tournament first round game against Dakota Wesleyan University, Frazier proved he could play against the best as he scored a season-best 18 points in the loss.

Other returners for McPherson include senior guard Trent Severs and sophomore forward Mason Hewitt. Severs, started 19 of the 25 games he played in averaging 4.1 points per game, while totaling 59 assists, 55 rebounds and 19 steals. He proved to be one of McPherson’s top free throw shooters by connecting on 80 percent of attempts. He saw limited playing time midway through the season due to injury, but is back and looking strong again in 2010-11. His leadership on the court will be important to the Bulldogs success this season.

Hewitt saw limited action in 28 games as a freshman a year ago. The 6-6 230 pounder from Norwich, Kan., scored 50 points while pulling down 30 rebounds in just 210 minutes last season. A consistent shooter in the paint, Hewitt shot 45.3 percent from the field and set a season-best with 10 points against Manhattan Christian College.

Despite the return of a few key individuals from last year’s KCAC runner-up squad, the Bulldogs will need their talented newcomers to step into key roles for McPherson to be successful in 2010-11. McPherson College Basketball | 2010-2011 | Media Guide

2010-11 SEASON OUTLOOK A new coach and a new philosophy headline the McPherson College women’s basketball programs 2010- 11 season. Cy Rolfs came on staff in late March with the desire to turn around a Bulldogs women’s bas- ketball team that finished 10th in the KCAC a year ago. With his enthusiasm, the Bulldogs are poised and ready for the season.

McPherson returns six players from a year ago, including all-conference selections Kristen Ozbun and Shireana Robinson. Ozbun, the lone senior on a young Bulldog squad, led the team with 364 points on 37.3 percent (137-of-367) shooting a year ago. She started all 27 games last season en route to register- ing 130 rebounds, 45 assists and 39 steals from her guard position. Ozbun is the current career leader in points with 858.

Robinson’s athleticism proved to be troublesome for opposing defenses as she averaged 9.3 points and 5.8 rebounds a year ago. Her 150 total rebounds ranked second on the team behind senior forward Steph- anie Poland’s 166. On the year, Robinson shot 38.8 percent (101-of-260) from the field in 26 games (15 starts).

Other returners for the Bulldogs include Brooke Weisenburger, Brooke Sloan and Brandi Florian. Weisen- burger started 26 of the 27 games she played in. She averaged 7.6 points, while recording 75 assists, 90 rebounds and 34 steals. She played as one of the Bulldogs primary ball-handlers. Both Sloan and Florian saw limited action in reserve roles.

Growing pains expected from a young squad, but Rolfs is confident that the work ethic the Bulldogs have shown throughout the offseason could go a long way toward the long-term goals of this McPherson College team. McPherson College Basketball | 2010-2011 | Media Guide
