It argues that women in these texts function as an “absent presence,” by which I mean that they are a convention of the patriarchal gangster landscape and often with little import while at the same time they cultivate resistant strategies from within this backgrounded positioning. Whereas previous scholarly work on gangster texts has identified how women are characterized as stereotypes, this dissertation argues that women characters frequently employ the marginal positions to which they are relegated for empowering effect. This dissertation begins by surveying existing gangster scholarship. There is a preoccupation with male characters in this work, as is the case in most gangster texts themselves. -

Page 2 The Blues Brothers, Jake and Elwood, might have said it best in their song “Sweet Home Chicago” from the movie The Blues Brothers. They sang, “Baby, don’t you wanna go back to that same old place—sweet home Chicago,” and this month, the Front Porch Travelers are doing just that. Chicago is near and dear to Bert’s heart because that is where his grandparents lived during the 1940s. Page 3 Truman Loves History The city of Chicago is located in the area of the United States known as the Midwest. It is located in Illinois, which joins the states of Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin in what is also called the Heartland of America. Page 4 The first record of the name “Chicago” dates back to 1688 and was derived from the Algonquian word Chigagou, meaning onion field or wild garlic. The city’s first permanent settler was Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, a trapper and merchant originally from Haiti. In 1779, he built the trading post that evolved into what we now know as Chicago. -

Farrell 1 THE IRISH-AMERICAN GANGSTER IN FILM By Professor Steven G. Farrell 1 Farrell 2 When The Godfather was released in the early seventies, it effectively created a myth of the virtually unbeatable Italian crime family for the American public that endured for the remainder of the century. This film also effectively eliminated all other white ethnic organized gangs from the silver screen, as well as from the public’s eye. Hollywood, as we shall see, had their history wrong in this case. The Italian Mafia was never as invincible as Hollywood depicted it on film, nor did they always have everything their own way when it came to illegal activities. It wasn’t until the close of the last century that the film industry began to expose the old-time hoods as being fallible and besieged on all sides from new criminal elements connected with newly arrived immigrant groups. The Cubans, Russians and the Colombian hoods, along with the longer established African and Mexican American gangs, had begun to nibble away at the turf long controlled by the almighty Italian mob. As the paradigm of the urban underworld began to shift to reflect the new realities of the global economy, another look at the past by historians and Hollywood is revealing that the Italian gang never had absolute power as it was once commonly believed. The Irish hoodlums, to single out the subject of this paper, were actually engaged in gangland activities years before the arrival of the Italians and the Irish also competed with the Italians up until recently. -

NEW GLARUS HISTORICAL SOCIETY Volume 3/Issue 7/October 2020 BOARD OF DIRECTORS REPORT 2020 BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Board held its regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 22. Larry Klassy, President Treasurer Freitag requested that the Board approve the purchase of Jim Hoesly, Vice-President QuickBooks accounting software to manage the Historical Society’s finances going forward. Following discussion, the Board decided to seek John Freitag, Treasurer information from several accountants about options to support the use of QuickBooks, before making a final decision. Erica Loeffelholtz, Secretary Board member Dibble provided an update on the Hall of History phase II John Colstad exhibit development. She shared a list of images that she intends to use in the display and provided a preliminary list of tasks necessary to prepare Mary Dibble for installation of the display. David Hustad Dibble will provide the Board with a written proposal, budget and estimate John Lienhardt from Park Printing to consider in order to submit a grant request to the Community Foundation of Southern WI’s New Glarus Community Fund. Ann Marie Ott The grant would be used to cover the costs associated with Phase II exhibits. The Board agreed to communicate on this matter via email since the deadline for the grant application is October 15, 2020, before the next scheduled meeting. Work continues on the artifact inventory project and volunteer Chip Williams has converted nearly all of the original accession records to a searchable Excel software format. The next step is to confirm the location of each of the items in the collection and update the electronic file to reflect this information. -
