Mohan, Chair, Professor of Sociology Gregory Kowalski, Professor of Sociology Joseph Molnar, Professor of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology Abstract The island of Okinawa has a history rich with tradition and cultural practices that are unique even to the Japanese culture. Especially unique, are the religious practices incorporating shamanism. These practices incorporate an array of concepts that revolve around family, ancestors, and community. Beliefs about the supernatural the connection to the living are interesting and ever-present. My research investigates previously collected ethnographies on the Ryukyuan Religion and the interaction between humans and the spirit world. I incorporate a theoretical framework that explores the practices in a social context and discuss the linear relationship between ritual, pollution, and liminality of death and deification. It is important to analyze the culture holistically, especially the roots from whence it came. And, as Susan Sered suggested, “…it is often via religious rituals and ideologies that women and men express their deepest concerns, their truest selves, their fears, hopes and passions” (Sered, 1994). ii Acknowledgments I would like to thank Dr. Raj Mohan for his support and guidance on this project. Introduction to the Study Purpose, Research Questions, and Hypothesis The purpose of this study is to investigate Ryukyuan Religion and the interaction between humans and the spirit world through the analysis of previous research on Okinawan belief systems, incorporating a theoretical framework that explores the practices in a social context, and by providing a cross-comparative analysis to similar East Asian religious beliefs and rituals. Below I have listed my research questions, followed by my proposed method to answer, and how I answer each. Questions: 1. What are the basic ideas and concepts behind the belief systems in Okinawa and how are they relevant to the social structure in Okinawa today? a. I answer this question by discussing the ethnographies compiled by previous researchers and situating these ethnographies in a foundation of sociological and anthropological theories. i. Chapters two-four discusses certain social structures, such as the significance attributed to familial relationships, may help explain the continued practices of folk religion in an area where biomedicine, scientific technology, and many Western ideas have long been incorporated. In addition, these sections discuss ritual activity, efficacy and folk healing as it pertains to the Okinawan belief system. 1 2. How are certain concepts of “pollution” and “purity” integrated into the Ryukyuan belief system and how do they compare to other similar cultural ideas of pollution? a. I answer this question by comparing the research from Okinawa to Chinese belief systems and other East Asian societies. i. Chapter five compares the strong similarities between Chinese, Korean, and Okinawan ideas of pollution, which probably exist in Okinawa due to early Chinese influence on Ryukyuan culture. 3.     CHAPTER TWO THE JAPANESE RELIGIO-CULTURAL CONTEXT Introduction This chapter introduces three factors that provide essential background information for my investigation into Endo’s theology of inculturation. First, I give a historical sketch of Japanese religion. Secondly, I look at different types of Shinto and clarify aspects of koshinto that inform contemporary Japanese culture. This is important as koshinto with its modern, psychological, and spiritual meanings is the type of Shinto that I observe in Endo’s attempts at inculturation. In connection with this I introduce the Japanese concept of the ‘divine’, and its role in the history of Shinto-Buddhist-Christian relationships. I also go on to propose that koshinto plays a fundamental role in shaping both different types of womanhood in Japan and the negative theology that forms a background to Endo’s type of inculturation. Outline of Features in Japanese Religious History Japan’s indigenous faith is Shinto, which has its roots in the age prior to 300 B.C. The animistic beliefs of this primal religion developed into a community religion with local shrines for household and guardian gods, where people worshipped the divine spirits. Gradually people began to worship ideal kami, personal kami and ancestorial kami.1 This form of Shinto is frequently called ‘proto-shinto’. Confucianism was introduced to Japan near the beginning of the 5th century as a code of moral precepts rather than a religion.2 Buddhism came to Japan from India 1 The Japanese word kami is usually translated into English by the term deity, deities, spirits, or gods.     Final Announcement 1) General Information The Thirteenth International Conference on Ultra-Relativistic Nucleus - Nucleus Collisions will be held on December 1 - 5, 1997 in Tsukuba, Japan. Like previous Quark Matter conferences, the major focus at the conference will be on experimental and theoretical highlights in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, with emphasis on the production and characteristics of high temperature/density and of the quark gluon plasma. Shinto Prior to the introduction of Buddhism to Japan in the 6th century AD, there was no special term denoting the web of indigenous religious practices and beliefs already in place in Japan. In order to distinguish the indigenous tradition from Buddhism, the term “Shinto” (way of the kami) was coined. Shinto was thus differentiated from Buddhism (butsudo, "the way of the Buddha"). "I define the word Shinto as the traditional indigenous religious practices of the Japanese people as well as their worldview, based on their concept of kami." The experience of collective efferves- cence magnifies the emotional impact of an event and can create a sense of awe or wonder.14 Following Durkheim, many anthropologists, including Dame Mary Douglas, have found it useful to explore the ways in which definitions of sacred and profane structure religious beliefs. In her book Purity and Danger (1966), Douglas analyzed the way in which cultural ideas about things that were “dirty” or “impure” influenced religious beliefs. The kosher dietary rules observed by Jews were one prominent example of the application of this kind of thinking.15 The philosopher and historian Karl Marx famously called religion “the opium of the people.”16 He viewed religion as an ideology, a way of thinking that attempts to justify inequalities in power and sta- tus. In his view, religion created an illusion of happiness that helped people cope with the economic difficulties of life under capitalism. As an institution, Marx believed that the Christian church helped to legitimize and support the political and economic inequality of the working class by encouraging ordi- nary people to orient themselves toward the afterlife, where they could expect to receive comfort and happiness. He argued that the obedience and conformity advocated by religious leaders as a means of reaching heaven also persuaded people not to fight for better economic or social conditions in their cur- rent lives. Numerous examples of the use of religion to legitimize or justify power differences have been documented cross-culturally including the existence of divine rulers, who were believed to be empow- ered by the Gods themselves, in ancient Egyptian and Incan societies.

    Isidoros, Between purity and danger BETWEEN PURITY AND DANGER: FIELDWORK APPROACHES TO MOVEMENT, PROTECTION AND LEGITIMACY FOR A FEMALE ETHNOGRAPHER IN THE SAHARA DESERT KONSTANTINA ISIDOROS ‘What truly distinguishes anthropology […] is that it is not a study of at all, but a study with. Anthropologists work and study with people.’ (Ingold 2011: 238) Introduction Although Mary Douglas (2002 [1966]) led the anthropological study of ‘purity and danger’ to explore the meaning of dirt in different contexts, it is a revealing lens to apply to another taboo – the erotic subjectivity of researchers (Kulick and Willson 1995). Of relevance here is Douglas’ starting point: what is regarded as dirt in a given society is ‘matter out of place’. Most human beings have an interest in sex, and anthropology has long studied sex in both distant and home field sites.1 Yet the sexual life of researchers during fieldwork remains a consummate example of ‘matter out of place’, a matter complicated by idiosyncratic sexual sensibilities. I reflect upon this ambiguity as sexual absence – or rather, as asexual presence – compelled by the authoritative imperative for scientific ‘purity’ (integrity). In this scenario, sexual relations between researcher and researched are seen as dangerous, polluting anthropological data as ‘dirt’. This article explores a debate in a small body of scholarship concerning sex[ual danger] in the field. In it I argue that this ‘matter out of place’, instead of jeopardising the integrity of the research, has the potential to offer rich ethnographic insight, hence it should be written up rather than written out. I suggest that, to understand what types of sex[ual danger] the researcher may encounter in the field, an anthropological ‘sex education’ prior to fieldwork would be helpful to comprehend both one’s own and others’ cultural perceptions and practices of sex.
