PAM HALL Singer, Songwriter, Arranger, Producer, Promoter Pam
PAM HALL Singer, Songwriter, Arranger, Producer, Promoter Pam Hall had her musical beginnings in the traditional school, church arenas. That she was quite gifted was no secret as she would always end up teaching everyone their parts when singing in a choir. She however, never ventured on stage alone until she was a high school senior, when she traumatized herself after having been told that "the mike didn't sound so good" (therefore she didn't sound good. Horror of horrors!). After entering the professional world of music, Pam quickly built up a solid reputation as a versatile lead singer and background vocalist. Pam is highly rated as one of Jamaica 's best and was one half of the award winning Pam and Woody duo (the first duo to be so awarded in Jamaica). Wishing to spread her musical wings, she embarked on a solo career which spawned such perennial favourites as I WAS BORN A WOMAN, PERFIDIA, DEAR BOOPSIE, I'LL ALWAYS LOVE YOU, TRULY, SWEETEST SOUND, YOUNG HEARTS and TIME FOR LOVE, among others. Pam is also a truly gifted jazz singer. She has won the Jamaica Federation of Musicians Jazz Vocalist award several times. As a jazz performer Pam has wooed audiences at home and abroad and is regularly featured on the BET jazz channel. Pam has done backing vocals for most of the top reggae artistes such as PETER TOSH, DENNIS BROWN, BERES HAMMOND, GREGORY ISSACS, BURNING SPEAR, BEENIEMAN and JIMMY CLIFF, as well as international acts like THE FUGEES, MAXI PRIEST, COURTNEY PINE, QUEEN LATIFA, TRACY CHAPMAN, ERICA BADOO, EVE and many others. -
Postcolonial Metaphors, Symbolic Binarism, and the Caribbean Terrain
IOSR Journal of Humanities And Social Science (IOSR-JHSS) Volume 26, Issue 4, Series 6 (April. 2021) 58-64 e-ISSN: 2279-0837, p-ISSN: 2279-0845. www.iosrjournals.org Postcolonial Metaphors, Symbolic Binarism, and the Caribbean Terrain Dr. Chris Egharevba & Kufre Egharevba University of Uyo, Uyo, Nigeria Abstract It is hard to peg postcolonialism by a particular definition. As a matter of fact, there are differing views as to the classification of certain works as postcolonial or not. One of the generally acceptable thoughts about postcolonialism is that the works of Frantz Fanon laid a good foundation and eventual structure for postcolonial studies. Clearly, however, the postcolonial ideals have been further developed by scholars like Edward Said, Gayatri Spivak and even Homi Bhabha through their various contributions. This paper does not intend to spotlight the works of these great scholars but to apply some of their thoughts to the postcoloniality in contemporary reggae music that springs from the Caribbean. Although with a solid foundation in roots reggae, contemporary reggae has advancing beyond the temporal restrictions of roots reggae, its antecedent, to heighten emphasis on social issue, spiritual longings and the personal in arresting postcolonial realities. The state of contemporary reggae as a socially conscious au/oral art thus begs sustained scholarship in examining how it rests on an established heritage to engage and reflect on topical 21st century postcolonial conditions in the Caribbean. With its theoretical approach grounded in postcolonialism and its selection of Jah Cure’s and Natty King’s reggae songs—two contemporary reggae artists—the paper examines conception of unity, love, and equality as envisioned by the selected contemporary reggae artists. -

The Ethiopian Perception of the Repatriated Rastafari by Erin
Leaving Out of Babylon, Into Whose Father’s Land? The Ethiopian Perception of the Repatriated Rastafari By Erin Christine MacLeod Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the PhD in Communications McGill University 2009 2 Abstract This project is the first to investigate the way in which Ethiopians view the Rastafari, a post-colonial religious faith. Since originating in Jamaica in the 1930s, Rastafari have moved to the East African country to settle, viewing the country as the Promised Land. Given this centrality of Ethiopia to Rastafari, my dissertation documents the perception of Rastafari and Rastafarians within Ethiopia and the role these immigrants play within Ethiopian society. The methodology used is that of thick description—making an attempt to engage with as many different narratives about the Rastafari as possible. Thick description allows for an understanding of what is happening as regards the interaction between Rastafari and Ethiopians, but also provides a sense of context and meaning. After extensive interviewing in the Ethiopian cities of Shashemene and Addis Ababa, a comprehensive review of Ethiopian media coverage as well as analyses of academic, religious and government documents, the multiplicity of perspectives found demonstrated a view of a unique immigrant community, as well as a multifaceted view of Ethiopia and Ethiopianness. I draw from the many narratives about the Rastafari a sense of what these narratives can inform relative to Ethiopian identity itself. Unlike traditional development workers who stay on average two years, Rastafari wish to settle in Ethiopia. The challenge, therefore, to Ethiopians is to find a way to legally recognize these immigrants within the already complex historical and social spectrum of Ethiopian identity. -

Roots reggae’s protest appeal, rhythmic syncopations, and deeply religious impulses attest to a rich, aware and reactive tradition forged from post-slavery legacies to engage the rotary realities of mid–late 20th century West Indies. Contemporary Caribbean reggae follows in this tradition. With a very deep root in the religious beliefs of the people, Reggae music developed as the medium for the masses to cope with the social, economic and political realities of the day in Jamaica and many other Caribbean communities. Consequently, the Reggae music has proven to be relevant as long as there is suffering and injustices among the masses, this is not to say Reggae music does not reflect some other aspects of life. The emphasis in this paper is to trace the history and development of Reggae, especially its connection to the Rastafari lifestyle. The paper considers some key pillars of Reggae music, which includes but not limited to the believe by the Rastafarians that Haile Selassie is the black Jesus which Marcus Garvey had prophesied about and that he is bringing salvation to the black community in Jamaica.
