The pamphlet was written by a PBA Champion from the past. While the pamphlet was written nearly fifty years ago there are pearls of wisdom worth sharing with today’s bowlers. I will do that in a series of short articles.

This week I will share what our champion felt was the third of the “SIX KEYS” to successful bowling: 1. Maximize Your Natural Ability 2. Physical Conditioning 3. Knowing Your Game 4. Knowledge of The Sport of Bowling 5. Confidence 6. Mental Attitude

“TO BOWL YOUR BEST YOU MUST KNOW YOUR GAME”. Every bowler must know their bowling game if they are to become a better bowler. So why not study your own game and become a better bowler? ADULT/SENIOR Why bowl poorly because you don’t know your game? That’s foolish. VIP DOUBLES It’s one thing to know your game and bowl poorly because of circumstances out of your control but sad when you bowl poorly because you don’t know your game and don’t know what adjustments to make when BOWLING TOURNAMENT faced with adversity. In the first case you have given yourself a chance to overcome adversity while in the Locals & Walk–Ins are Welcome! second case you haven’t given yourself as much of a chance to overcome adversity. So study your bowling SATURDAY, JANUARY 16, 2021 game and become a better bowler. “IF A SPORT IS WORTH PLAYING, IT’S WORTH PLAYING WELL”. Another way to know your game is to use the “BUDDY SYSTEM”. The bowling buddy system is a two-way street where both partners act as buddies for each other. Joyce Dalton–Jensen (619) 251–9660 So how does a bowling buddy help? A bowling buddy is responsible for studying your game and being able to identify reasons for any struggles you experience on the lanes. Bowling buddies do that by knowing your form when you’re bowling good so that they can identify form changes that may be responsible for any bowling struggles. A BOWLING BUDDY HELPS YOU TO KNOW YOUR GAME.

Michigan Rootsby Dave Williams Run Deep One of the joys of my early life was spending time with my mother’s parents, Gent David Breaks and Iva Matilda (Bryan) Breaks. Gent came to California from Weeping Water, Nebraska, while Iva was from Mt. Morris, Michigan. Gent became a U.S. Postal Carrier for 40 years, delivering mail for many of those years to the rural farmers around Western Sonoma County on his Indian Motorcycle.

Iva became a housewife, caring for two children and a small farm of sorts, with a stable of lambs and chickens, as well as a garden of various vegetables and fruits. Everything that my grandma did with me became an enjoyable adventure, from collecting eggs in the morning, having a chunk of cheese as an afternoon snack, or enjoying an ice-cold glass of water from the fridge.

Now I don’t know if Iva ever bowled while living her early life in Michigan, but I do remember all of the post cards that she collected from our relatives in the Great Lake State. I remember spending hours look- ing at those cards as my grandma would reminisce about her experiences with relatives in communities such as Clio, Flint, Royal Oak, Dearborn, Detroit, Houghton Lake, Traverse City, Chelsea, Lansing, Mackinaw City, Ypsilanti, and even more. I wonder if during her time in Detroit my grandma ever visited Detroit Recre- ation, the largest bowling center in the world when it opened in 1917. There were four floors of bowling, with 22 lanes on each floor, and 103 billiards tables spread over two floors. In an article by Dan Austin at HistoricDetroit.org, the seven story structure was hailed as “the greatest recreational temple in the world,” according to the Detroit Chamber of Commerce.

Austin went on to say that the ground floor contained a number of shops, including a shoeshine, drugstore, laundry, lunch counter and a hat shop. In a slogan that is eerily similar to Main Event’s “Eat-Bowl-Play” in the 21st century, the motto at Detroit Recreation was “Eat-Smoke-Shave-Rest-Play,” as stated by The Detroiter Magazine.

“Before Detroit Recreation opened, bowling was considered a man’s game, but within a few months of its opening, a floor of alleys was set aside for women, and the Detroit Women’s Bowling Association was formed in 1918,” said Austin. By 1942 there were 89 bowling centers in the city of Detroit, a number that would later grow to more than 300 in the greater metropolitan area.

As more and more factories closed and newer facilities opened in the suburbs (with adjacent parking lots), Detroit Recreation continued to suffer from a decline in league business, but not before it set the stage for many changes in the sport, including the integration of women and African American bowlers into organized league play.

Here’s an update of our Largest Bowling Centers Worldwide, with changes from the October listing. If you know of any large bowling centers (80 lanes or more) that are not included, please let us know.

Carol, there are a few lost San Gabriel Valley cen- ters you missed. There was another center in Alhambra on the cor- ner of Valley and Garfield but I can't remember what it was called. I may have messed up some of their names but it has been so long and my memory is starting to get fuzzy. Dave Prechtl Page 6 CaliforniaBowlingNews.com November 12, 2020
