Matthews edges by Mooney for top billing (4.11.2021) David Matthews totaled one pin more than T.J. Mooney to earn the top series for the week honors. Both players had competed in the 14th Annual Open City Tournament the day before and had great success that carried over to the Thursday Sundowners League. Matthews produced individual games of 227,247, and 232 for a 706 series. Mooney tabulated games of 239, 199 and 267 for a 705 total. They both had only one open frame in their sets. On the last day of the city tournament, Matthews rolled a great 768 scratch series and his partner Tom Crowe added a 705 to win the Div. 1 Doubles title with a score of 1,473. Mooney enjoyed the city tournament also, winning the singles event, being a member of the winning team, winning the all events and City Championship, and bowling a 300 game in his second singles event. Mike Stacy has started to improve on his bowling as the season progresses by shooting the top score in the Spring Monday Mixed with a 249 high game contributing towards a 668 and also posting a 665 set on Thursday night. Other bowlers breaking the 250-650 mark were Rob Lyman (659), Cody Reeves (654), Patrick Chrisco (651), JD Villaloros (272) and Don Padgett (257). Sharon Guinn posted the women’s high score this week with a 213 high game helping towards a 545 set in the Spring Monday Mixed League. Congratulations to Sharon for winning her second VUSBC Women’s City Championship last week. Trudy Wortham posted the second high ladies score with a 214-534 in Thursday Sundowners. Last week’s USBC Masters tournament was exciting to watch, especially when there was an 18 year old high school senior as the No. 5 seed in the television step-ladder finals. The high school senior is Spenser Robarge, who is headed to the Wichita State bowling team in the fall. He is another lefty two handed phenom who is not bothered by pressure. The Team USA member defeated Chris Via 213-194, and Jason Sterner 2224-166 before lane transition affected his strike carry and he lost to No. 2 seed Thomas Larsen from Denmark 213-200. Texan Anthony Simonsen is the youngest bowler to win the USBC Masters at the age of 19 years and 39 days in 2016. Top seed Jesper Svensson could not find a good line from the start and had back to back splits in the 7th and 8th frames. He still had a chance to beat Larson by striking out in the 10th frame but he left a soft 7 pin on his first ball to lose 197-176. This was Larson’s first Major Tournament victory and it earned him $30,000 plus a spot in the PBA Super Slam. The Super Slam is for this years’ Major Tournament winners and will be televised by Fox on April 18 at 11:30 a.m. FS1 will televise the US Open on Sunday at 1 p.m. The winner will join Francois Lavoie (PBA TOC), Kyle Troup (PBA Players Championship), Tom Daugherty (PBA World Championship), Larson (USBC Masters) as the fifth 2021 Major winner.
