School Improvement

What has been happening Inspection wise?

Ysgol had their Estyn monitoring visit in September 2016 and were deemed to have made very good or strong progress in all areas. Ysgol Cynddelw has also made very good or strong progress in relation to their recommendations following the Estyn Inspection in June 2017. Judgement on progress in noted below. The national literacy and numeracy scores in each school show good progress and will be analysed further shortly. We have ensured that all recommendations above have been added to the Federation development plan. Certain recommendations have been developed throughout the federation and having a joint up approach to School Development is key. We are now inspection free for a while but we will continue to work hard to provide the very best for the pupils in the Ceiriog Valley schools.

The children at Ysgol Pontfadog have been very busy this year, with Eco Council, school council, healthy schools and a range of after school clubs. The children thoroughly enjoyed eco club and planted a range of flowers, fruit and vegetables in our garden. The children and staff have all worked hard in ensuring the environment is inviting and tidy. We have had support from our local community and this showed at our Summer Fair as we raised over £1000.00. We are currently working towards Platinum in Eco Schools and Phase 5 for Healthy schools unit The Environment. We have enjoyed termly visits from PC Kim and a range of guest speakers through out the year; Especially Kirsty the local Bee Keeper! The honey was yummy. We have been on a range of trips to support our topics, Chester Zoo, Space sport, Cosford, Alun Waters Country park and Valley Crucis Abbey. The Key 2 children entered the BBC 2 500 word story and a pupil Elijah Gallione got through to the first round. We visited and celebrated International Eisteddfod 70th Birthday. The children experienced the different cultures and music from all around the world. We have been working with a local artist Sue Turner with our work displayed at Oswestry Library in October 2016 and October 2017. The KS2 Pupils enjoyed working with Ceiriog Tales. Children created their own animation.

The children at Ysgol Cynddelw have been very busy this year, with Eco Council, school council, healthy schools and a range of after school clubs such as netball, football, chess, dance, drama etc. We celebrated Roald Dahl Day by wearing yellow or dressing up in a character’s costume from his book. Childline came in to give an assembly to junior pupils and then did workshops with years 5/6.We raised money for Children in Need by dressing funny for money, as well as holding a Cynddelw’s Got Talent for Sport Relief. Pupils competed in the local Eisteddfod with art, singing, reciting and handwriting. Pupils competed in the National Urdd competitions also, with singing, reciting, acting and dance. We continue to hold links with St Ffraid’s Church at Harvest and Christmas with special services. Year 5/6 took their Bikeability tests with all getting Level 1 and many receiving Level 2! The juniors have been studying Lesotho during the spring term and took part in an African drumming workshop – noisy but exciting! The juniors also took part with Nature Spy where we located camera traps to see any local, interesting wildlife (only Chip unfortunately!) Techniquest came out with their inflatable dome to help us learn about space. To help enhance our sense of culture and identity through Cwricwlwm Cymreig the pupils have taken part with Ceiriog Tales looking at John Ceiriog Hughes, clog dancing and animation, as well as having a writing workshop with Aled Lewis-Evans, an afternoon with Merched y Wawr and a trip for 5/6 down to the capital, Cardiff. Show Racism the Red Card have been in for an enjoyable workshop to raise awareness of prejudice. We received a lottery grant to purchase ipads to help parents learn about the apps and technology their pupils are using. We have enjoyed termly visits from PC Kim and a range of guest speakers throughout the year. To support our topics the staff and pupils dressed as Evacuees whilst studying WW2, visited RAF Cosford and had fun trips out to Chester Zoo and Gullivers. We’ve had many PTA fundraisers throughout the year such as a Fashion Show, the Autumnal Fair, Christmas Fair, Easter Bingo and the Summer Fair. Pupils have continued to access Forest Schools at Nantyr and Mercher y Mwdlyd. The junior pupils continue to enjoy access to the library bus every three weeks.

Ysgol Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog 2016-2017

The children at Ysgol Llanarmon have been very busy this year, with Eco Council, school council, healthy schools and a range of after school clubs such as Film Club, cooking club and sports club. We celebrated Roald Dahl Day by wearing yellow or dressing up in a character’s costume from his books. Childline came in to give an assembly to junior pupils and then did workshops with years 5/6. We also had an assembly from the ‘Dogs Trust’ Charity telling us how to care for our dogs properly. We have been busy raising money for charity’s such as Save the children (Christmas jumper day),we raised money for Children in Need by dressing funny for money, as well as having crazy hair and dressing up for Comic Relief. We also dressed up as our favourite characters to celebrate world book day, I’m sure you will agree they all looked fantastic!

Pupils competed in the local Eisteddfod with art, singing, reciting and handwriting. Pupils competed in the National Urdd competitions also, with singing and reciting. As part of celebrating St David’s Day we held our annual school eisteddfod where everyone took part singing, reciting and in group competitions. Our Christingle service was held in St Garmon's Church and our harvest service in the Chapel in Llanarmon which was well supported once again.

Year 5/6 took their Bikeability tests with some getting Level 1 and many receiving Level 2! The juniors have been studying Lesotho during the spring term and took part in an African drumming workshop at Cynddelw – noisy but exciting! During the summer term they had an animation workshop with Mr Robin Williams based on the history of ‘Tryweryn’. The Infants had a lovely day pond dipping and doing various Eco friendly activities at Alyn Waters as part of their topic ‘ The Garden’. They also had a wonderful time on a trip to Chester Zoo with the other pupils from the federation.

Techniquest came out to Cynddelw with their inflatable dome to help us learn about space. To help enhance our sense of culture and identity through Cwricwlwm Cymreig the pupils have taken part with Ceiriog Tales looking at John Ceiriog Hughes, clog dancing and animation, as well as having a writing workshop with Aled Lewis-Evans. We also held an afternoon. ‘Prynhawn Paned’ as part of celebrating ‘Wythnos Cymru Cŵl’ when we invited members of the community and Urdd into school to chat with the pupils in Welsh. We also had a Welsh disco that week during golden time and face painting. Years 5/6 have been to Cardiff with Miss Evans and Mr Cook and had a fantastic time in the capital. We have enjoyed termly visits from PC Heledd and a range of guest speakers throughout the year such as visits from the bee keepers association and Dafydd Emyr. The pupils have continued to have extra reading sessions with Anti Eirwen and Mrs Crawshaw once a week and have taken part in various sporting activities throughout the year. To support our topics the staff and pupils dressed as Evacuees whilst studying WW2, visited RAF Cosford and had fun trips out to Chester Zoo, the cinema, ten pin bowling and to the park. We’ve had many PTA fundraisers throughout the year such as the Christmas Fair, Christmas raffle during the concert, Easter Car Treasure Hunt and summer Sponsored walk. We received our stage 7 Healthy schools award in November,2016 and will be applying for our 8th year award at the end of the summer Term. The school council have been very busy organising and raising funds, organising their stalls for the Christmas fayre and putting together a fair-trade hamper for a raffle to raise awareness during our school eisteddfod. As part of developing their entrepreneurship skills, also to raise money for the upkeep of Fudge and Speedy (the school guinea pigs!) they have decided to sell ‘ice pops’ every Friday afternoon during golden time, up until the end of the summer term.

The pupils have been very busy looking after the school garden with many Eco days and activities in school, we are in the process of applying for our Platinum Eco school award and hope to receive it by the end of the summer term. Pupils have continued to access Forest Schools at Nantyr and taken part in outdoor activities in school.

Sports Teams Teams from the federation have done very well during 2016-2017. The Federation football team played a few games and won the Ysgol Dinas Bran Tournament. Three teams attended the tournamnet and did vey well. The federation cross country team won the small schools cross coutry run. The netball team did very well considering there was only on girl in year 6! Pupils also enjoyed dodgeball, tennis and cricket activities.

Additional Information:

English is the main language used in Ysgol Pontfadog however we encourage all pupils and staff to be bilingual. We teach Welsh as a Second Language from Nursery to Year 6. We encourage pupils to use the Welsh language in class and around school. Our pupils enjoy singing the Welsh National Anthem in the school Assembly and they participate in the St. David’s Day Parade. We work closely with feeder Secondary Schools to ensure a smooth transition for all pupils and to facilitate continuity in the Welsh language. Ysgol Llanarmon is a naturally Welsh medium school offering bilingual education. Ysgol Cynddelw is dual stream with the majority of pupils in the Welsh medium.
