A pioneering force to constantly be reckoned with, this first generation Chinese-American political activist and champion of the Black Power movement continued to blaze a fiery path until she reached 100 years old. Of no relationship, yet sharing a name, director Grace Lee was drawn to Lee Boggs the first time she encountered her at UCLA in the early 21st century. Following her since then, Lee captures the fervent politics, the engaged compassion, and the inexhaustible devotion of Lee Boggs as she worked for equality and justice in both her adopted hometown of Detroit and across the world of international affairs. At a mere 84 minutes, AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY could never hope to encompass the entire working life and political impact of the legendary Grace Lee Boggs, yet it artfully introduces us to her story. She was a minority in multiple capacities: an educated woman in the early 20th century, an Asian American, and a political trendsetter rather than a passive figure. She married James Boggs, an African-American Chrysler worker and political activist, moved to Detroit—where she remained until her death in 2015—and feverishly fought for black rights. Yet, as an unparalleled champion of equality and human rights, she never considered herself an icon. -

From the moment I met Boggs, I knew I would have to make a longer film just about her. Over the years, I would return to Detroit, hang out in her kitchen and living room and watch her hold in thrall everyone from journalists to renowned activists to high school students. I recognized the same thing in myself that I saw in all of them—eagerness to connect with someone who seemed to embody history itself. As someone who came of age in the era of identity politics, I would have found it hard to ignore the fascinating details of how this Chinese-American woman became a Black Power activist in Detroit. But Boggs would constantly use our interview sessions to turn the questions back on me. “What do you think about that? How do you feel about what's happening in Korea? Tell me more about your own story,” she would say as soon as the cameras turned off. My own identity is more wrapped up in Boggs’s story than she knows. And it’s not because we share the same name. Boggs’s presence—in Detroit, in the world and in my imagination—has helped transform my own thinking about how to tell a story about someone like her. -

Hughes All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT “American Monsters: Tabloid Media and the Satanic Panic, 1970-2000,” analyzes an episode of national hysteria that dominated the media throughout most of the 1980s. Its origins, however, go back much farther and its consequences for the media would extend into subsequent decades. Rooted in the decade’s increasingly influential conservative political ideology, the satanic panic involved hundreds of accusations that devil-worshipping pedophiles were operating America’s white middle-class suburban daycare centers. Communities around the country became embroiled in criminal trials against center owners, the most publicized of which was the McMartin Preschool trial in Manhattan Beach, California. The longest and most expensive trial in the nation’s history, the McMartin case is an important focal point of this project. In the 1990s, judges overturned the life sentences of defendants in most major cases, and several prominent journalists and lawyers condemned the phenomenon as a witch-hunt. They accurately understood it to be a powerful delusion, or what contemporary cultural theorist Jean Baudrillard termed a “hyperreality,” in which audiences confuse the media universe for real life. Presented mainly through tabloid television, or “infotainment,” and integral to its development, influence, and success, the panic was a manifestation of the hyperreal. -

Through an array of first-person interviews, she finds that the name carries with it a stereotype of the model minority—or rather a “quiet, well-behaved overachiever.” While a wide range of women, including a Hawai’i based television anchor, could fit a certain image of the name, others would break that mold. -

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Grace Lee (American Revolutionary: The Evolution of Grace Lee Boggs), the film will broadcast nationally on PBS this fall. The program is co-produced by the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) and KQED and funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. In the one-hour documentary, Lee travels from Houston, Texas to New York’s Lower East Side, from Oak Creek, Wisconsin to Oahu, Hawaii seeking stories that reflect an evolving Asian Pacific America and the role food plays in peoples’ lives. “We wanted to find unexpected stories that embodied the Asian American experience,” Lee said. “Asian America is already such a vast, complex, and contested idea. What’s changed? What has remained the same? And what can we say that the “healing process” has accomplished? Dai Sil Kim-Gibson, director of WET SAND: VOICES FROM L.A. and her cinematographer and collaborator Charles Burnett will participate in a discussion with local community leaders to assess the successes and challenges we face in moving toward a more culturally, socially, and politically equitable society in post-Rebellion Los Angeles. Screening: WET SAND: Voices from L.A. (2004; 57 mins) In WET SAND, Kim-Gibson revisits Los Angeles to learn what changes have occurred since the 1992 Civil Unrest, only to discover that living conditions have deteriorated and that few remedies have been administered to the communities most stricken.
