I wasn't keen on the first couple of story arcs collected here the Skartaris one and the featuring the Doom Patrol were not to my tastes at all but the second half kind of made up for those. The ending was a very typical massive brawl Secret Six arcs usually seem to end this way, don't they? I'm glad I read this iteration of The Secret Six. Folks are very gaga regarding this series, and I see the appeal of it, having read all the original run volumes now. It's to some degree what I imagine fans wanted of the movie—a violent slugfest with low lives with a loyalty to one another that's preposterous and envy-inducing. Yet I gave an extra star because I loved the arc set in Hell. Not only did this allow fallen members of the team like Knockout and Paradaemon a final moment in the spotlight but it had some really good character development for Catman and Scandal. I really wish that all of the issues were as carefully crafted as this one. Though I did very much enjoy Killer Shark throughout Jul 27, Matt rated it liked it Shelves: secret-six. It's not bad, but The formula of "team member betrays team over faux-ethical dilemma, chaos ensues" gets a little tiresome, as does Simone's semi- folksy dialogue from half the characters. But still, if you read the series a bit at a time, it can be fun. View 1 comment. May 25, I. Other books in the series. DC launched a new Secret Six series in September , reuniting Catman , , Scandal , and , and adding Bane hinted at by Simone months earlier as "an A-list villain" [7] and an original character named Jeannette , who appeared in the third issue. The Six have been hired to retrieve Tarantula from Alcatraz Island , and find a card which she stole from "Junior", a mysterious villain who supposedly runs the entire West Coast mob. This Junior has practically the entire villain community at her beck and call, all afraid of her, even those in Arkham Asylum. She has the ghastly appearance of an old clown, with sliced skin and eyes stitched wide open to give the appearance of a clown. Tarantula sacrifices herself by pulling herself and Junior in front of the supervillains' combined attack, seemingly destroying the card along with them. However, it is later shown that Scandal is now in possession of it. Although the current incarnation of the Secret Six are technically supervillains, several members of the team are treated sympathetically and come across as heroic, if only on the virtue of the team encountering individuals who are even more bloodthirsty and villainous. In a new storyline starting with issue 10 titled "Depths", the Six have been hired by a new villain named Mr. Smyth, a slave trader. He is also holding the Amazon Artemis of Bana-Mighdall prisoner. Jeannette breaks her out and was met with opposition from the rest of the team, who in the middle of battling with each other are interrupted by Wonder Woman. Disappointed in the repetitive failed progress the team's missions have had since joining, Bane decides to take over as team leader with the approval of half the team. His first directive was to remove Scandal Savage as a team member and replace her with . John Ostrander guest-wrote Secret Six vol. The series has also had three crossovers with other DC titles. In , Simone teamed with John Ostrander for "Danse Macabre", a crossover with Ostrander's acclaimed s Suicide Squad title, which had been "resurrected" and given one additional issue as part of DC's company-wide Blackest Night event. The crossover involved the Six being hired by an anonymous party in reality to break into Belle Reve prison in order to rescue an inmate, only to discover that the mission was a trap set in place so that the Suicide Squad could apprehend the team and kidnap Deadshot. The crossover began in Suicide Squad 67 and subsequently ran through Secret Six vol. In February of the same year, Simone took part in another two-issue crossover, this time with Keith Giffen 's Doom Patrol for a storyline entitled "Suicide Roulette". The crossover, which took place in Secret Six vol. However, upon their arrival the team is met by a veritable army of superheroes ranging from Green Lantern and Huntress to the Justice League and Teen Titans. Despite the overwhelming odds, the members of the Secret Six make one last stand, and were defeated and incarcerated. In this new timeline, Secret Six was relaunched in December with Gail Simone returning as the writer. In the third issue of the series the was revealed to be the Mockingbird, while Big Shot was revealed to be Riddler's mole on the team. In the next issue, Scandal Savage, Ragdoll and Jeannette appear acting as operatives of Mockingbird, tracking down the team but later the three characters become allies to the Secret Six and turn on the Riddler. After the portal is closed due to the combined efforts of Batman and , the team minus Gordon, who was apprehended shortly afterwards does battle with in the Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen miniseries. Because Cats in the Cradle, the title storyline, is actually quite good. It has everything that I've come to expect from Simone's Secret Six: great characters who are morally ambiguous on a good day, blood-soaked story, and actual emotion. Good stuff. I liked it, of course, since it's Gail Simone writing these wonderful characters and exploring the darkness of the fringes of the DC Universe and Ragdoll gets to be creepy and deviant, which is what I want most out of a Secret Six collection , but it was certainly different and not in a uniformly good way. Most of the collection is a story about Catman. His son is kidnapped, so he goes after the kidnappers with a level of violence that shocks his companions and This collection is a little odd. His son is kidnapped, so he goes after the kidnappers with a level of violence that shocks his companions and most readers, I suspect. For as much as I don't really buy Catman as a suddenly devoted dad to a child who has gotten almost no screen time in the books, I do like the numerous flashbacks into Catman's truly horrific family life as a child, which explains a lot of why he is the way he is. At the end of the book, though, there's a bizarre one-off story set in the Old West, with the cast represented in genre stereotypes. The end of the story seems pretty final, but I'm not sure if the next issue is going to explain it, if it was part of a DC event that I didn't know about because I don't care about DC, or if it was just, "Look, readers, we write you some great stories every month, and now we need you to just bear with us for an issue while we indulge our Western daydreams. For another, it gets away from team storytelling in favor of focusing primarily on one character. These two factors combine to make the whole book seem slightly off-kilter. Calafiore's art still suits the book well. And the last story in the book is one of those love-or-hate alternate-setting things. I did not love it. I still love the Secret Six, but in my opinion this was the weakest collection so far. The characters and dialog are still interesting--that's Gail Simone's strength in this title--but the plot wasn't very engaging. Also, it didn't seem to mesh well with Catman's background, at least as we've seen him before. That said, it's still a decent read, especially for fans of the series. And the crazy Elseworld's-esque tale that ends the book is worth the price of admission itself. Sep 05, Shannon Appelcline rated it it was amazing Shelves: comics-dc , comics. This volume was so much fun. It is violent, visceral, and a bit of Sophie's Choice. Even though I read this out of order, can't wait to start at the beginning. I have always really liked Gail Simone and Secret Six but this large collection seemed very disjointed. First, there are two parts in it completely unrelated to the preceding or following arcs. Then, the plots were so convoluted. The dialogue was still amazing, but I couldn't figure out why things were happening. Nothing seemed to matter but the characters reacted like it was the most important. The art was decent but Jim Calafiore's heads are all identical. Folks are very gaga regarding this series, and I see the appeal of it, having read all the original run volumes now. It's to some degree what I imagine fans wanted of the Suicide Squad movie—a violent slugfest with low lives with a loyalty to one another that's preposterous and envy-inducing. Not only did this allow fallen members of the team like Knockout and Paradaemon a final moment in the spotlight but it had some really good character development for Catman and Scandal.

When they return to the rich guy for payment, Catman gets a call - his infant son has been kidnapped with an ultimatum: Catman must kill his teammates or sacrifice his boy. Somehow that makes the Six seem worse than the Squad and those dudes are scum! Notice anything? So not a great origin story at all. View all 5 comments. Feb 06, Sesana rated it really liked it Shelves: comics , superhumans. For the purposes of the rating, I'm going to completely ignore the last issue in the collection. Because Cats in the Cradle, the title storyline, is actually quite good. It has everything that I've come to expect from Simone's Secret Six: great characters who are morally ambiguous on a good day, blood-soaked story, and actual emotion. Good stuff. If the collection had stopped there, it would have been great. An easy four stars. And then there's the Wild West issue. Which is I don't know, a Wi For the purposes of the rating, I'm going to completely ignore the last issue in the collection. I don't know, a Wild West themed AU? I honestly have no idea what's going on here. It's told straight from beginning to end, which is somehow more confusing than if the last panel had been one of them waking up and saying, "What a dream! Just plain weird. It isn't terribly good anyways, which makes it worse. Mar 31, Wayland Smith rated it it was amazing Shelves: superheroes. I read this when it came out as solo issues, and it might be the best of the Secret Six series, which was one of my favorites. For those who think Catman is a joke easy to do from before Gail got hold of him this should change your mind. What will he do to get him back? How far will he go. For those unfamiliar with the character, his big things are: world's best tracker, top tier knife fighter in the world, and has fought Batman in the past and managed to hold his own. Really think about that combination, think about him being backed by a team of crazed, violent killers who consider him one of their few friends, and ask yourself: is pissing him off a good idea? Find out here. Jul 23, Kurt rated it liked it. This collection is a little odd. We'll give your book back in a month, we promise. Apr 18, Ash rated it liked it Shelves: comics. Which goes about as well for the hunters as you'd think. Kind of hilariously so, actually. And, in the main arc, Catman's reaction to that phone call is Well, if you somehow didn't know what sort of comic you were reading before, you sure know now. Jun 08, The Library Ladies rated it really liked it Shelves: graphic-novels. The thing about Catman is t originally reviewed at thelibraryladies. The thing about Catman is that of the entire group, he is the one who is the most morally ambiguous. He has been labeled a villain, and tries to wear that label with pride, but there is something in him that makes him tread towards goodness at times. We finally got some more insight into his past, and why he is the way he is. Catman finds out that his son with Cheshire has been kidnapped, and while he goes looking for the baby, he thinks about his own relationship with his father, who was abusive and violent. It was nice to see that in a moment where betrayal seemed inevitable, Simone made Catman find another way. I got very misty-eyed at the end. Okay fine, I cried. I was thinking that when the team split there would be a whole lot of drama, and yet they seem to be perfectly amicable and understanding. It was a nice choice, and not the obvious one. And this volume marked the return of the funny and unique side stories! The other story was an alternate universe story of the Six, which took place in the Old West. It had some steamy scenes with Jeanette and Deadshot yes please! But then…. Well, it ended very dark. If they can keep up the momentum, I feel like this series is going to stick the landing. We can only hope. Jun 13, Finn rated it liked it Shelves: comics. Full disclosure: I adore Secret Six. I've been reading it since the Villains United days. Gail Simone knows how to write a team book, and she's obviously got an emotional investment in these characters. The series has always been a wild ride of humor, drama, and action. Gush, gush, gush. I find it hard to gush about this volume, though. For one thing, it's got an overly grimdark tone that feels out of place in a Six book. There's a bit of the sublime to balance out the ugly, but it feels forced a Full disclosure: I adore Secret Six. There's a bit of the sublime to balance out the ugly, but it feels forced and awkward. For another, it gets away from team storytelling in favor of focusing primarily on one character. These two factors combine to make the whole book seem slightly off-kilter. Calafiore's art still suits the book well. And the last story in the book is one of those love-or-hate alternate-setting things. If you've made it this far into Secret Six, you're in for a treat, and the finale will stick in your mind for a long time afterward. Mar 26, Roberto Diaz rated it liked it. As the last book of the series, this collection tries to wrap up the entire arc of the Secret Six, with some stories that deal with their views on what is right for them. I really wish that all of the issues were as carefully crafted as this one. Though I did very much enjoy Killer Shark throughout Jul 27, Matt rated it liked it Shelves: secret-six. It's not bad, but The formula of "team member betrays team over faux-ethical dilemma, chaos ensues" gets a little tiresome, as does Simone's semi-folksy dialogue from half the characters. But still, if you read the series a bit at a time, it can be fun. View 1 comment. May 25, I. Kind of a let down after the strong earlier versions with the stuff in hell being a little rushed and pointless. Then the finale was abrupt and kind of lame.
