USE OF EMERGENCY DEFIBRILLATOR

A recent case requiring use of a defibrillator raised the question of the need for training on the machine.

Please be assured that training is NOT required. When the cabinet containing the machine is opened, voice and pictures will lead the user through the procedure. The Ambulance Service will also be contacted. If shock treatment is required, and the machine will analyse the need or not, the shock treatment is tailored to the analysis made and automatically applied by the machine so the risk of human error is minimal.

Remember, the machine is automatic and designed to save lives – please do not think you need to be an expert to use it.

A defibrillator is located on the side wall of The Crown Inn and another at Rookley Farm, . STOCKBRIDGE MUSIC

Professor David Owen Norris has very kindly agreed to accept our invitation to become a Patron of Stockbridge Music (SM). David is a distinguished professor of music and an outstanding pianist who performs with irresistible enthusiasm. He supported the early days of Stockbridge Music by giving three memorable concerts using his 1828 Broadwood Concert Piano. Each concert was received with great enthusiasm by large audiences. He is often seen on television, most recently in the autumn in programmes about Holst, Vaughan Williams, Elgar and Parry, while the summer saw his sixth series of Chord of the Week. The World this Weekend marked the centenary of the Armistice with an Owen Norris interview. He made his 26th appearance on Radio 3’s Building a Library in October. His complete recordings of the songs of Sir William Sterndale Bennett will shortly appear on EM Records. He will complete his recordings of the Songs of Sir Arthur Sullivan (Sterndale Bennett’s pupil) with a third disc on the Chandos label next Spring. He has just recorded virtuoso rewrites of Mozart Piano Concertos from 1827 for Hyperion. David has expressed a wish to perform in the magnificent Hurford Hall in the Town Hall in Stockbridge. Therefore we will be introducing the piano to this venue for the first time which is very exciting indeed. His Piano Trio will be performing on Friday 22nd November 2019 and on this occasion he will be performing on a Steinway Baby Grand piano loaned to SM for this concert by a member of SM.

Health Walks

Test Valley Health Walks are free, a great way to get fit and provide opportunities to explore what’s on your doorstep and make new friends.

Test Valley Health Walks would not exist without our fantastic volunteer walk leaders.

As a volunteer walk leader, you will be helping people in your community get active and healthy, providing vital support they otherwise might not get.

As well as ensuring walks are friendly, safe and well run, walk leaders are also ambassadors, showing exercise really can make a difference to people’s lives, and significantly improve health, well-being and confidence. Walking for Health is England’s largest network of health walk schemes, helping all kinds of people to lead a more active lifestyle.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer Health Walk Leader, we have some training available on: Volunteer Walk Leader Training Tuesday 26th March 2019 – 9.30am-4.30pm Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, Civic Offices, London Road, Basingstoke, RG21 4AH This is a free one day course for anyone willing and able to lead walks in the community for Test Valley Health Walks. An apology The Gauntlet team apologises to our readers and advertisers for the unacceptable quality of the previous edition of the magazine. The print quality was dreadful and, in trying to make last-minute changes to improve the pictures, some pages got jumbled. Our usual printing machine was being serviced and the replacement that we were loaned was unable to print to our usual standard. We have our own machine back now, so we hope that this edition is up to the usual production standard. Harvey Saunders (editor)

The Lay Minister has the last word

Dear Friends, We’re just weeks into the season of a new year - a time when new things are afoot. A new year’s resolution kept or not? A new set of TV dramas? A new accounting year? In our church, we hope for news of a new vicar soon. In our country we hope for new peace and stability. The new year’s Bible readings are all about God’s new son Jesus and the start of his mission of good news for the world. Though Jesus was God’s Son, he didn’t know everything all at once. But like us, he had to find out just what he was called to do and be, and to learn how to do it and be it, to train himself. Sometimes that went well, and sometimes it was hard going. As it is for us. So with all that’s new around us, it’s a great time to ask ourselves what we are called to do and be. And whether there’s something new that God wants to call us to do and be. To take up a new activity? To make a new friend? To support a new charity? To be a candidate for a new role in the village? To pursue a new direction in life? To be a new parent or grandparent? To sign up for some new training? Discovering six weeks in the desert listening for God, talking with him, and asking questions, before he started. We call it Lent, and it begins soon. Did Jesus know all the answers at the beginning? Of course not. But he said “yes” to what God was calling him to, and started anyway, gathering a group of friends around him who would support and join him. If, reading this, you sense a calling to something new, and would like to talk or pray with someone, contact one of us at church and we will help if we possibly can. May God bless us all as we listen for and respond to the things God is calling us to do and be.
