Sangma today held series of meetings with district administration and health department officials during his visit to South Garo Hills, North Garo Hills and West Garo Hills respectively. In the three districts, he also visited the Quarantine and the Corona Care Centres and interacted with the inmates and assured all support from the government. At Baghmara, members of different religious organisations prayed for the government and the administration sending a clear message that the society is together to defeat the corona virus. “It is very important that while we work to defeat the corona virus we unite as a team. The officials have done an exemplary job as they have managed the situation with limited resources and infrastructure,” said the Chief Minister during his meeting with the officials at Baghmara. He was accompanied by MLA of Rongara-Siju Constituency Rakkam Sangma, MLA of Chokpot Constituency Lazarus M Sangma and EM of GHADC Sengnal N Sangma. “We have to adapt to the situation and learn to change ourselves and get back to doing things differently as we call it the new normal,” the Chief Minister added, while deliberating on the way forward. The Chief Minister informed that the safety of the people is of paramount concern, however, effort are on to ensure that economic activities were started, so that normalcy can prevail. “We need to be stable and not panic and be prepared for all kinds of possibilities and challenge to deal with the crisis,” the Chief Minister exhorted. The Chief Minister also discussed on restarting of economic activities along the international border. “When the border is open and the economic activities starts, the administration should be prepared for any possibilities and take utmost measures to ensure safety of the people,” he added. The Chief Minister also directed the administration to continue with their effort to sensitise the people to adapt to the situation. “The elderly people, children and lactating mothers need to be taken care of and the day to day functioning of the hospital should also begin,” the Chief Minister added. He also assured that additional ambulance will be provided to South Garo Hills and the administration should reach out to the government for any support required to combat covid-19. “The Government is prioritizing the health infrastructure and will work out modalities to strengthen the facilities in the hospitals, PHCs and CHCs across the State. The Chief Minister also expressed his appreciation to everyone who is a part of this operation. “This has been an unprecedented situation that the nation is facing. There is no manual that can tell us what to do and this would not have been possible if everyone did not unite together,” the Chief Minister added. At Resubelpara, the Chief Minister was accompanied by Deputy Speaker of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Timothy D. Shira, MLA of Kharkutta Rupert Momin, MLA of Bajengdoba Pongseng Marak and EM of GHADC Sukaram Sangma. “Meghalaya has been an example of a discipline society and this should continue in the weeks to come. I thank the members of the society for taking the responsibility and the initiative,” the Chief Minister said during his interaction with officials at Resubelpara. At Tura, he also handed over a quarantine completion certificate to a resident of fancy valley locality. The Chief Minister will visit various localities in Tura tomorrow and will later visit Williamnagar in East Garo Hills. .

    July 29, 2004 Press Release No. 478/04 PROPOSAL TO PROMOTE TOURISM IN THE STATE In a press conference held on July 28, 2004, at the Conference Hall of the Main Secretariat Building, the Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr. D. D. Lapang informed that an all out attempt will be made to promote and develop tourism in the State. To achieve this purpose, a MoU has been signed between India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) and the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) to avail the expert services of the ITDC. According to the Chief Minister, as per the first phase of the plan, besides beautifying the entrance to Meghalaya in Ri Bhoi District, other plans include setting up of a tourist information centre at Byrnihat, wayside amenities with restaurants, toilets, PCO/STD, Cyber Café, landscaping and parking areas for buses and cars in the same place. Furthermore, a Dhaba will also be set up at Sumer offering 24 hours eating outlet, parking place for buses/trucks, clean toilets facilities etc. Plans are also underway to develop the Barapani area by constructing a health club, recreational complex, swimming pool and sports complex. Moreover, amusement parks, rope-ways, upgradation and extension of the Orchid Resort with 20 rooms and two presidential suites and a separate complex, use of ultra modern light and sound show, development of water sports, down town tax free shops and floating decks for musical concerts and functions are some of the facilities, the State Government is contemplating to introduce at Barapani. With the aim of attracting more domestic and foreign tourist to Cherrapunji, the State Government will improve way side amenities at Mawjrong, construct a tourist resort with conference hall and include a theme park, toy train and children play area.
