Release Date: SCULPTURECENTER PRESENTS THE INFLUENTIAL GERMAN ARTIST’S FIRST SOLO MUSEUM August 22, 2016 EXHIBITION IN NEW YORK CITY, EXAMINING HER FASCINATION WITH THE SEA Long Island City, NY – Who’s Exploiting Who in the Deep Sea?*, Cosima von Bonin’s first solo museum Exhibition: exhibition in New York City—on view September 19, 2016–January 2, 2017—examines the German Cosima von Bonin: Who’s Exploiting artist’s fascination with the sea. Commonly evoked in her works, but rarely made explicit, the ocean is Who in the Deep Sea? an organizing thematic for this show that focuses on a selection of her sculptures from 2000 onwards. Dates: September 19, 2016–January 2, A mysterious underworld with its beaches populated by sun-seeking vacationers, these two opposing 2017 sides of the sea—as sun-filled and leisurely in contrast to the dark, deep, and unknown—operate as a metaphor in much of von Bonin’s work. Manifested through sculptures of creatures like lobsters and Opening Reception: sharks, as well as large bikinis and lifeguard stands, the exhibition investigates this thread through von Sunday, September 18, 2016, Bonin’s work. 5–7pm Von Bonin’s cast of textile characters included in the exhibition present a host of contradictions— Media Contact: approachable creatures that aren’t quite what they seem or behaving as we might expect.     COSIMA VON BONIN WHAT IF IT BARKS? Featuring AUTHORITY PURÉE February 23 – April 21, 2018 Opening Reception: Friday, February 23rd, 6–8pm 456 West 18th Street After Cosima von Bonin’s extensive European traveling retrospective “The Lazy Susan Series” ended at the Ludwig Museum in Cologne in 2011, the artist went into a self imposed pre- retirement, only to be interrupted by another extensive show at MUMOK, Vienna in 2014. Then she had enough! That is until 2016 when von Bonin’s decades’ long fascination with the deep-sea was brought to the fore in a traveling sculptural show, “Who’s Exploiting Who in the Deep Sea?” From Glasgow International, to New York’s Sculpture Center, and in 2017 Oakville Galleries, Ontario, von Bonin’s cast of oceanographic characters rippled with mystery, fun and contradiction. WHAT IF IT BARKS? featuring AUTHORITY PURÉE, von Bonin’s first full scale installation at Petzel’s 18th Street location (her eighth show with the gallery), is marked by more curious incongruities. The artist’s marine motif is updated and extended in the gallery space to a sweeping fish farm: A group of polyester shark heads lurk in the open tops of wooden barrels— each jaw smirks, gnarling a soft toy rocket. Robed mackerel in synchronized display appear alongside bass-guitar and ukulele toting piscine beings, accented by 1970s-style short-board surfboards. But life is not all aquatic: Suspended from the ceiling an open, oversized cat food can exhales contiguous puffs. Printed on the side in white lettering are the words, “AUTHORITY PURÉE”. Von Bonin’s signature ‘rags’ or cloth paintings dangle from the gallery walls and dive deeper into nautical spheres.

    In the fall of 2014 mumok will present the largest exhibition of works by Cosima von Bonin to date in Austria. Opening on October 3, 2014, this exhibition, HIPPIES USE SIDE DOOR. THE YEAR 2014 HAS LOST THE PLOT., will include more than 100 works by von Bonin, who was born in 1962 in Mombasa, Kenya, ranging from her earliest to completely new works. This retrospective exhibition will also show how von Bonin’s work has moved more and more in the direction of installations that increasingly come to take possession of the space they are placed in. Another typical feature of her work is a complex network of relations between the fine arts and music that she has established, including longstanding colleagues and friends in her exhibition projects. At mumok, Tocotronic and Phantom Ghost will accompany the exhibition with concerts, and two further new formations from von Bonin’s circle of friends and acquaintances, Die 3 Ypsilons and The Ypsilon Five, will perform at the exhibition opening on October 3. The mumok facade will gain a new balcony for this exhibition, with a vomiting figure standing on it. On the Exhibition – Inside von Bonin’s Spinning Machine This show is intended as a retrospective in which von Bonin’s oeuvre can be seen as a complex system full of allusions and references. In her works, von Bonin turns on a spinning machine that spits out reference after reference—to pop and high culture, and also to art history. This machine has quite clearly lost the plot. Very personal emotions enter via the side door, and—like ghosts— they play their games with the legacy of other artists.

Ticket sales begin on June 16, Venue: Halle E in the MuseumsQuartier 2014. Tickets can be bought via Ö-Ticket. Concert tickets are also valid as entrance tickets to the exhibition at mumok. The band Tocotronic goes back twenty years, and has made ten albums. In Vienna they will be including songs from their anniversary album, Wie wir leben wollen—How We Want to Live. One of this musical epic’s seventeen songs is Neue Zonen, a homage to Cosima von Bonin. While the self-avowed “plush lovers” pay their respects to the artist, she returns the compliment with the “soft fences” she has erected in her exhibition and the kisses she blows at these young men—even if they have meanwhile grown out of the training jackets of their youth.

    On December 20, Marianne Boesky Gallery will open Cosima von Bonin, a focused exhibition of eight works by the Cologne-based conceptual artist. Inspired by popular and vernacular culture, movies, fashion, and music, von Bonin examines cultural phenomena and the contradictions and relationships therein. Her multifaceted practice embraces sculpture, photography, textile paintings which she refers to as "Lappen" (translation "rags"), installation, performance, film, video, and music. For the upcoming exhibition, Marianne Boesky Gallery will present works from across a decade of von Bonin’s career, capturing the dynamic and open approach that has made von Bonin one of the most influential German artists of her generation. The exhibition will remain on view at the gallery’s Aspen location through February 2, 2020. Von Bonin's work touches upon ideas of identity and self-reflection with both absurdity and humor. This can be seen in her recent marine-themed installations, including What If It Barks 3 (Black Ukulele Version with Ghost) (2018), What If It Barks 4 (Black Ukulele Version) (2018), and Au Pairs (2018)—all of which will be on view in the upcoming presentation. In discussing this work with the Brooklyn Rail in 2018, von Bonin said, “I grew up in Kenya by the Indian Ocean…As a kid, I was always a hermit. I think of myself as a hermit crab... One day I walked alone on the beach. I was three years old, and I wore shorts fastened with elastic, and I stuffed everything I found in them—crabs, jelly fish, everything. I never had anything to do with art, it was always the beach and animals, animals, animals.
