This plan sought the development of the eastern coastal area extending over the three provinces of Chon Buri, Rayong, and Chachoengsao (a 80-200km zone in Bangkok’s southeastern district) as Thailand’s No. 2 industrial belt next to Bangkok with a view to developing export industries and correcting regional disparities, thereby decentralizing economic functions that would contribute to ease over-concentrated situation in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area. In response to this decision, the Ministry of Transport, Department of Highways (DOH) established the Sixth Five-Year Highway Development Plan (1987-1991), in which development of a highway network to support the development of the eastern coastal area was positioned as a top-priority project. To achieve this priority objective, the DOH planned construction of the following three routes: expansion of the highway for transport of goods and materials between Bangkok and the eastern coastal area 1 (projects (1) and (2) below), and construction of a highway linking Thailand’s inland northeastern districts to the coastal area, bypassing highly congested Bangkok (project (3) below).

Journeys to distant continents which might be thousands of miles away can be made within hours in aircrafts that have been developed to achieve supersonic speed. However, the high cost of airfreight discourages merchants from using it to transport heavy and bulky cargo which is more economically moved by sea-faring vessels - a mode of transport which has been utilized by merchants for thousands of years. Ships can sail at much higher speeds and can carry tens of thousands of tons in this modern era, but they also continue to provide housing and office space for all of those who sail them in much the same way that they have in the past. All of the activities of man's daily life are still squeezed on board. There is evidence to suggest that sea traders from afar were present on the river plains in central Thailand and along the coast of the Gulf of Siam down to the Malay Peninsula since the 4th or 5th century. During the 7th to the 11th centuries when human settlement had become more prominent, with the Dvaravati Kingdom controlling much of central Thailand and the Srivijaya Kingdom's territory covering the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian Archipelago, evidence of maritime trade routes include ceramics from China, glass and stone beads from India and Persia, and cult icons, all of which had been carried to the region by these maritime traders and introduced to the indigenous people.

Project Profile and Japan’s ODA Loan Myanmar Loas Thailand Bangkok Cambodia Chonburi Project Site Site Map: Bangkok – Chonburi, Kingdom of Thailand Bangkok – Chonburi Highway (1) Background Thailand’s Sixth National Five Year Plan for Economic and Social Development made the development of the Eastern Seaboard a priority in order to promote export industries, correct regional disparities and relieve the excessive concentration of economic functions in Bangkok, where infrastructure was saturated. New production centers for domestic industry were constructed in the region (the Map Ta Phut and Laem Chabang Industrial Complex), and new ports at Map Ta Phut and Laem Chabang. This development led to a shortage of roads for freight shipping between Bangkok and the Eastern Seaboard Development Zone. This project aimed to construct roads for that route to support the realization of the effects of the Eastern Seaboard Development Plan, and it was planned as a high-priority project. (2) Objectives This project constructed an intercity expressway as a support project for the Eastern Seaboard Development Plan, with the following objectives. - To alleviate congestion on existing roads between Bangkok and the Eastern Seaboard Development Zone, namely National Route No.3 (Sukumvit Highway) and National Route No. 34 (the ﾊﾞﾝﾅ ~ ﾀﾗ-ﾄ Highway). - To accommodate increasing traffic volumes generated by the progress of the Eastern Seaboard Development Plan. No new deaths were reported today. • The 212 laboratory-confirmed cases reported today include 14 people who arrived recently in Thailand and were diagnosed in quarantine facilities and 5 individuals who entered Thailand through the land border. • The 212 new cases reported today also include 187 ‘local transmissions’, details of which are as follows: . 158 cases are linked to occupational risk, visiting crowded places or had contact with confirmed cases, including Samut Sakhon (46), Ang Thong (18), Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya (6), Pathum Thani (1), Nakhon Pathom (1), Loei (1), Nonthaburi (3), Bangkok (27), Chonburi (26), Sara Buri (1), Nakhon Si Thammarat (1), Trat (1), Prachin Buri (1), Ratcharaburi (1), Samut Prakan (24) . 29 cases are under investigation and verification including those in Samut Prakan (5), Tak (1), Singburi (4), Chonburi (14), Rayong (2) and Chantaburi (3) • The remaining 6 cases reported today are migrant workers and in the Thai population who were identified through contact tracing and active case findings in Nong Bua Lamphu (1), Nonthaburi (1), Bangkok (4).
