Gerber This dissertation is a biographical study of Moses Hayim Luzzatto (1707–1746 or 1747). It presents the social and religious context in which Luzzatto was variously celebrated as the leader of a kabbalistic-messianic confraternity in Padua, condemned as a deviant threat by rabbis in Venice and central and eastern Europe, and accepted by the Portuguese Jewish community after relocating to Amsterdam. -

THE MYSTERY, MEANING AND DISAPPEARANCE OF THE TEKHELET YOSEF GREEN AND PINCHAS KAHN And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying , "Speak to the people of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes [tzitzit ] on the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a thread of blue [Petil Tekhelet]. And it shall be to you for a fringe, that you may look upon it, and remem- ber all the commandments of the Lord, and do them; and that you seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, which incline you to go astray ; That you may remember, and do all my command- 1 ments, and be holy to your God" (Num. 15:37-40). This text is climaxed by the commands to look upon the fringes, to remem- ber the commandments, and to do them. But, why and how do the fringes enable a person to become holy to your God ? The rabbinic interpretation and explication of these biblical verses and the disappearance of the tekhelet fringe will lead us to a rather surprising exposi- tion of talmudic mysticism. Our inquiry begins with a quote from T.B. Menahot 43b. The Talmud there first quotes from the biblical text in a Tannaitic source ( Baraita ), and then adds a critical point: "That you may look upon it and remember . and do them . Looking [upon it] leads to remembering [the commandments], and re- membering leads to doing them." This comment presumably relates to the issue of looking at the fringe in order to remember the commandments. -

English has 10 clusters corresponding to basic English color terms [BK69], whereas Korean exhibits additional clusters for ¨ ( ), ] ( ), 자주 ( ), X늘 ( ), 연P ( ), and 연보| ( ). Abstract Color names facilitate the identification and communication of colors, but may vary across languages. We contribute a set of human color name judgments across 14 common written languages and build probabilistic models that find different sets of nameable (salient) colors across languages. For example, we observe that unlike English and Chinese, Russian and Korean have more than one nameable blue color among fully-saturated RGB colors. In addition, we extend these probabilistic models to translate color terms from one language to another via a shared perceptual color space. We compare Korean-English trans- lations from our model to those from online translation tools and find that our method better preserves perceptual similarity of the colors corresponding to the source and target terms. -

This question can be approached via methods used in the graphical modeling of data. Specifically, graph theory lets one define a repertoire of candidate structures that can be applied not only to quantitative data, but also to symbols consisting of qualitative components. -

SES Kabbalah Course Segment 4 The Theoretical Kabbalah The most lasting product of the Provençal and Spanish schools of Kabbalah was compilation and publication of the classical Kabbalistic texts: the Sefer Yetzirah, the Sefer ha-Bahir, and the Sefer ha-Zohar. The Spanish Rabbi Moses de Léon (c.1250–1305) published the Zohar at roughly the same time when Abraham Abulafia was writing about the ecstatic Kabbalah. Controversy over the Zohar’s origins may never be resolved, but the work emerged as a major Jewish sacred text. Without doubt it became the most significant text in the development of the theoretical Kabbalah. The Zohar provided all of the concepts on which the theoretical Kabbalah is based. But its full potential was not exploited for another 300 years. That task fell to an elite group of scholars who assembled at Safed, Galilee, in the 16th century. Moses Cordovero, Isaac Luria, and others codified the zoharic teachings and built the elaborate system of theoretical Kabbalah we recognize today. In this segment we shall learn more about the Ain Sof and the sefiroth. We shall study the Kabbalistic story of creation, fall and redemption; we shall meet the Shekinah, the feminine aspect of God; and we shall explore the human soul and reflect on the role humanity can play in cosmic redemption. Specifically, this segment includes the following sections: • Cultural Context: From Southern Europe to Safed • The Divine Emanations • Creation, fall and redemption • The Shekinah • Humanity: Constitution and Behavior • Reflections, Resources, and Assignment. Cultural Context Exodus from Provence and Spain The Golden Age of southern European Kabbalism, discussed in Segment 2, came to an end as political changes undermined the environment in which generations of Jews had lived, worked, worshipped and studied. -

Hardin* Department of Philosophy, Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY, USA Definition The Berlin-Kay theory of basic color terms maintains that the world’s languages share all or part of a common stock of color concepts and that terms for these concepts evolve in a constrained order. Basic Color Terms In 1969 Brent Berlin and Paul Kay advanced a theory of cross-cultural color concepts centered on the notion of a basic color term [1]. A basic color term (BCT) is a color word that is applicable to a wide class of objects (unlike blonde), is monolexemic (unlike light blue), and is reliably used by most native speakers (unlike chartreuse). The languages of modern industrial societies have thousands of color words, but only a very slender stock of basic color terms. English has 11: red, yellow, green, blue, black, white, gray, orange, brown, pink, and purple. Slavic languages have 12, with separate basic terms for light blue and dark blue. In unwritten and tribal languages the number of BCTs can be substantially smaller, perhaps as few as two or three, with denotations that span much larger regions of color space than the BCT denotations of major modern languages. Furthermore, reconstructions of the earlier vocabularies of modern languages show that they gain BCTs over time. These typically begin as terms referring to a narrow range of objects and properties, many of them noncolor properties, such as succulence, and gradually take on a more general and abstract meaning, with a pure color sense. -

As a result, Idel rejects essentialist definitions of “Judaism”, or any other religious tradition. The answer seems to lie in Idel’s definition of the “connectivity” between the human and the divine as a relationship which “underlies the basic notion of religion as such”. Opposing Rudolph Otto’s description of the holy as remote, Idel explains holiness in terms of closeness and connection. This reading of religion is supported by that of sociologist Daniéle Hervieu-Léger, who describes religious practice as constructing a “chain of mem- ory” - a term which echoes with Idel’s analysis of Jewish ritual as the construction of “enchanted chains” of connectivity. Hervieu-Léger’s study points towards the possibility of regarding Judaism, as a family-cen- tered tradition, as paradigmatic for traditional religion. Indeed, in recent studies, Idel describes the con- struction of memory through ritual practice as the most important means of shaping identity for all forms of traditional Judaism. -

Cover design by Jeff Belizaire ABOUT THIS BOOK Why does earlier Greek painting (Archaic/Classical) seem so clear and—deceptively— simple while the latest painting (Hellenistic/Graeco-Roman) is so much more complex but also familiar to us? Is there a single, coherent explanation that will cover this remarkable range? What can we recover from ancient documents and practices that can objectively be called “Greek color theory”? Present day historians of ancient art consistently conceive of color in terms of triads: red, yellow, blue or, less often, red, green, blue. This habitude derives ultimately from the color wheel invented by J.W. Goethe some two centuries ago. So familiar and useful is his system that it is only natural to judge the color orientation of the Greeks on its basis. To do so, however, assumes, consciously or not, that the color understanding of our age is the definitive paradigm for that subject.
