Princ Eugen Savojski U Velikom Bečkom Ratu Do Oslobođenja Beograda (1683.-1688.) scrinia slavonica 15 (2015), 35-55. 35 Siniša Đuričić (Osnovna škola, Jagodnjak) PRINC EUGEN SAVOJSKI U VELIKOM BEČKOM RATU DO OSLOBOĐENJA BEOGRADA (1683.-1688.) Kriegsarchiv, 20 Bde., Wien 1876 -1892. U memoarskim djelima nekih njegovih suvremenika, Louisa de Rouvroy Duc de Saint-Simona, The memoirs of the duke de Saint-Simon, u prijevodu Francisa Arkwrighta, New York, 1915., zatim Marquisa de Dange- aua, Memoirs of the court of France, 2 sv., London 1825. i privatnih pisama orleanske vojvotkinje i snahe Louisa XIV. Charlotte, German correspondence of the duchess of Orleans, mother of the regent, London 1824., služe kao ref- erenca za neke činjenice iz njegove rane mladosti kao i vjerodostojan prikaz francuskog dvora za vladavine Louisa XIV., okruženja u kojemu je Eugen odrastao. Za kasniji period njegova života vrijedni su spomeni u memoarima 36 S. Đuričić: Princ Eugen Savojski u Velikom bečkom ratu do oslobođenja ... francuskih maršala, Mémoires du maréchal de Villars, Paris 1884 - 1892, Mémoires et correspondance du maréchal de Catinat, kao i pisma njegovog bliskog suradnika u ratu za španjolsko naslijeđe, vojvode od Marlborougha, The Letters and Dispatches of John Churchill, First Duke of Marlborough from 1702 to 1715, London 1845. Iste godine pojavi- la se i knjiga Paula Frischauera Prince Eugene, A Man and a Hundred Years of History, u engleskom prijevodu tiskana u New Yorku, prilično romantizirana Eugenova biografija čiji živopisan književni stil ipak ne čini ovu knjigu pre- tjerano vrijednim historiografskim doprinosom proučavanju prinčevog života.

  • A Monumental Debate in Budapest: the Hentzi Statue and the Limits of Austro-Hungarian Reconciliation, 1852–1918
A Monumental Debate in Budapest: The Hentzi Statue and the Limits of Austro-Hungarian Reconciliation, 1852–1918 MICHAEL LAURENCE MILLER WO OF THE MOST ICONIC PHOTOS of the 1956 Hungarian revolution involve a colossal statue of Stalin, erected in 1951 and toppled on the first day of the anti-Soviet uprising. TOne of these pictures shows Stalin’s decapitated head, abandoned in the street as curious pedestrians amble by. The other shows a tall stone pedestal with nothing on it but a lonely pair of bronze boots. Situated near Heroes’ Square, Hungary’s national pantheon, the Stalin statue had served as a symbol of Hungary’s subjugation to the Soviet Union; and its ceremonious and deliberate destruction provided a poignant symbol for the fall of Stalinism. Thirty-eight years before, at the beginning of an earlier Hungarian revolution, another despised statue was toppled in Budapest, also marking a break from foreign subjugation, albeit to a different power. Unlike the Stalin statue, which stood for only five years, this statue—the so-called Hentzi Monument—had been “a splinter in the eye of the [Hungarian] nation” for sixty-six years. Perceived by many Hungarians as a symbol of “national humiliation” at the hands of the Habsburgs, the Hentzi Monument remained mired in controversy from its unveiling in 1852 until its destruction in 1918. The object of street demonstrations and parliamentary disorder in 1886, 1892, 1898, and 1899, and the object of a failed “assassination” attempt in 1895, the Hentzi Monument was even implicated in the fall of a Hungarian prime minister.

  • Discovery of the Danube
THE DISCOVERY OF THE DANUBE INTRODUCTORY THOUGHTS AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I was the first to shed light on this distant and secret world hidden in barbarian obscurity – stated Luigi Ferdinando Marsigli proudly in the foreword to the Danubius Pannonico-Mysicus (1726). He was referring to Hungary. This was the same Hungary that was the battleground for the battles between Christian Europe and the Islamic East from the 14th century until the end of the 17th century. And while engaged in this deadly struggle, people perished and the villages and the towns that survived the torments of campaigns in the shelter of the castles became poverty-stricken. The waters and meadows went wild and, through neglect, became swampy. In this state, they often served in the defence of towns and castles. When the Turkish forces were ultimately expelled, Hungary, in the heart of Europe, awaited an explorer who would re-discover the ethnographic, geographic and natural conditions prevailing there. This explorer arrived in 1683in the person of Marsigli when the Turkish army advanced for the last time during the siege of Vienna. Marsigli (1658 – 1730) was born and educated to become a mature scientist, diplomat and soldier in an exciting century of flourishing science. This was a world which saw the genesis of the modern history of our continent: it combined the theocentric ideas of the medieval world, the Renaissance with its revival of the classical past and values and the age of Newton, delighting in the ecstasy of new scientific theories. He had close links with the Catholic Church, yet he studied, drew and collected pagan Roman relics with zeal and sought an explanation for every phenomenon in the world surrounding him with the rational thirst of an enlightened man.

  • OTTOMAN BUILDINGS of BUDA in a TURKISH DRAWING OF1684 from the Marsill-COLLECTION of BOLOGNA
GLi n ey-Ooğu Avrupa Araş tırma /an Derg isi Yı l: 20 74- 7 Sayı: 25 S. 35-54 OTTOMAN BUILDINGS OF BUDA iN A TURKISH DRAWING OF1684 FROM THE MARSILl-COLLECTION OF BOLOGNA Manika F. MOLNfı.R • .Abstract We have relatively few visual sources about Ottoman buildings and architecture in the 17'h century Buda. 1shall present a relatively little-known - because wrongly identified - large-size Turkish drawing portray of the unsuccessful attempt to liberale Buda in 1684. The drawing shows several Ottoman buildings and their architectural structure with Osmanli (Ottoman) inscriptions. The drawing constitutes part of the Marsili collection, which was found in the University Library of Bologna and contains the western (usually ltalian, Latin, German), and Turkish written documents, or those which were collected by Luigi Ferdinando Marsili (1658- 1730). Marsili, who spent a significant part of hi s life serving the emperor, fighting against the Ottomans in Hungary (practically from the siege of Vienna in 1683 to the peace treaties of Karlowitz in 1698-1699), was not only a soldier and talented, well-trained military engineer, but a passionate collector too. Having identified the inscriptions of the drawing, in compar ison with the other two Turkish maps known from the era we can state that this image is significantly different from the other two Turkish works at several points. Since the maps of strategic importance showing the more important buildings and parts of the fortress, bas tions, towers. gates and the important parts around the town like hills, waters (stream. lake) and the major buildings, these were most probably prepared and used tor military purposes, while the Ottoman image of the siege of Buda in 1684 was made with miniature techniques, similar to the ones used in chronicles, with drawings and in artistic nature; this is a drawing of the town and the siege without significant military value.

  • Formation of the Habsburg–Ottoman Frontier in the Danubian Region
FORMATION OF THE HABSBURGOTTOMAN FRONTIER ..., BUDA 1541 163 FORMATION OF THE HABSBURGOTTOMAN FRONTIER IN THE DANUBIAN REGION: BUDA, 1541 GUSTAV BAYERLE Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, USA On July 17, 1540 John I, the last Hungarian speaking King of Hungary, died. Stephen Werbõczy, his chancellor ventured to Istanbul to ask Sultan Suleiman for approval of naming John Sigismund, the infant son of the late king, as the new King of Hungary. This request was contrary to the agreement made in the secret Treaty of Várad of 1538 in which John I pledged that after his death Ferdinand will inherit his share of Hungary. Soon, Suleiman acknowledged John Sigismund as King John II just as the Habsburg General Vels besieged Buda to support Ferdinands claim to the throne. In December Werbõczy returned from Istanbul and announced that Suleiman was planning a campaign in Hungary but the news did not stop Ferdinand; in May 1541 his army renewed the siege of Buda. Sultan Suleiman arrived at Buda on August 26 and, after defeating the with- drawing Habsburg army exactly 15 years after his victory at Mohács on August 29, 1526 his army entered the castle without opposition. There he announced that he would continue to protect John II as the ruler of an enlarged Transylvania but will make Buda the seat of a newly formed Ottoman province under the com- mand of Suleiman Pasha. For the protection of John IIs rule he imposed on Transylvania a levy of 10,000 ducats annually. After a few weeks the Sultan left Hungary leaving behind a garrison of 3,000 soldiers.

When Pest chose to do this, the wealthy citizens of the settlement sought political influence by gaining various positions. However, for Greek merchants in Pest, the German majority, it was not an easy task. In 1699, among the founders of the Guild of Pest Traders, we find the Greek Emmanuel Miklós, who can be the same as Emmanuel de Nicora and a Manoli Miklós dealer. He was the most prestigious Greek person of his age. He won civic rights in 1694, and in 1705 he was elected to the council. Manol - as a non-voting member - was registered as a forensic jury. He also won nobility. At the time of his death in 1736, he had thirty-one cows, ten thousand forints cash and the same amount of tobacco. Miklós Manoli's eldest son continued trading, serving as a middle military officer and third as a postman at Lúgos. At that time, some of the Greeks had already won civil rights (Miklós Pusztay in 1696, Emanuel Pasics in 1697, Miklós Grec in 1699) after they all bought a house in Pest. The population of Pest was still small at that time, and his commercial life was weak.

Ann Arbor, MI 48106 FORTIFICATIONS AND STATECRAFT OF THE GONZAGA, 1530-1630 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Thomas Francis Arnold, B.A., M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 1993 Dissertation Committee: Approved by John F. Guilmartin Williamson Murray John C. Rule Adviser, Department of HistJ ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This dissertation would not have been possible without the guidance and support of many people. My advisers in the Department of History at the Ohio State University, Professors Williamson Murray and John F. Guilmartin, rewarded me with their confidence in my abilities, and spurred me on with their encouragement. They were always truly interested in listening to my ideas, showing a patience and respect that many other professors unfortunately lack. Professor John C. Rule, also of the Department of History at Ohio State, taught me the importance of the broader perspective in understanding the early modem period. Professor Geoffrey Parker, now of the History Department at Yale University, shaped this dissertation in many ways; above all by suggesting that I look beyond the larger states of early modern Italy for an example of the military revolution at work. Daniela Ferrari, director of the Archivio Di Stato di Mantova, shared her own work on the fortifications of the Gonzaga and welcomed me to the archives in Mantua. My parents, who indulged my desire to clamber over European castles and forts when I was at an impressionable age, bear considerable responsibility for this dissertation.
