RSNC BRAZIL PHOTO BY FREITAS NETO THE RANCH SORTER NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015 2 NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015 WWW.RANCHSORTING.COM 3 THE RANCH SORTER NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015 4 NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015 WWW.RANCHSORTING.COM 5 What’s Inside . . . Letter From The President RSNC Brazil Behind the Scenes...... 10 As this exciting year winds down to a close, RSNC seems to be winding up in a lot of very big ways. The 2015 RSNC World Finals was a huge success with almost 5,000 teams competing and it kicked off a new competition year with many already setting their sights on the 2016 World Finals. Last year over 1,600 brand The Big Daddy Summer Spectacular...... 16 new members joined our association and since the June Finals we are already ahead of that pace this year. New contestants are out there just waiting for someone to invite them to our association and I challenge everyone to continue to welcome them by showing the friendly atmosphere the RSNC is so well known for. Congress Super Sort...... 18 One of the most exciting aspects of promoting RSNC is the overwhelming number of times every facility we travel to expresses their positive feelings about how much they enjoy our members. They say it is because of Upcoming Events...... 22 the family oriented, friendly atmosphere our contestants bring. To them it is obvious our contestants are having fun and are happy to share their excitement with everyone. It brings a very fresh atmosphere to the equine industry and because of that they can easily see why our sport is growing so fast. RSNC is about providing our Tulsa State Fair...... 23 membership an opportunity to enjoy the camaraderie of the sport without a lot of drama and distractions. If that continues to happen our association and our sport will continue to grow. RSNC Rules & Updates...... 24 Speaking of growth, two of the largest shows known to our sport are continuing to get even bigger. Be sure to look over the results of the Big Daddy Summer Spectacular and the Congress Super Sort. Cheyenne is pushing hard on the 2,000-team mark and the Congress sorting almost hit 1,500 this year. Something has to be said for Oklahoma State Fair...... 28 quality events at an affordable price. Many of our producers are also seeing new growth in team counts at their events. That is partially due to the State Points Race...... 30 new $100,000 BONUS INCENTIVE CAMPAIGN just released. With this program, our goal is to encourage contestants to support our producers at the weekend events. It is not about contestants just riding the minimum of 5 shows to qualify for the big Finals. With 5,000 teams, there is already plenty of participation at our Finals so RSNC Australia...... 32 we are rewarding contestants even more who are supporting their producers at the weekend show. In addition to the $150,000 in prizes already given out in the State and National Points races there is now another $50,000 in prizes available at the Regional Finals for all contestants in the top 10 of any state points race. If you can’t make the top ten in your state you may want to travel over to a neighboring state that has only had a few shows. It doesn’t matter what state you earn it in so it may be a great opportunity to support a brand new producer in a brand new state before the end of the year. Additionally, those contestants who are true blue RSNC members and are out there all year supporting our producers now have an extra $50,000 in bonus incentive cash to run for at the World Finals. All you have to do is compete at a minimum of 5 shows and on 100 total teams throughout the year from June to June. Any one who competes at 5 shows still qualify for the finals with $400,000 in cash and prizes but those who compete on 100 teams within the year get to run for a bonus $50,000 in cash! Your participation counts and we want to be sure you know we appreciate it. The number of times you have participated will soon be posted on the website so you can track your participation progress. There are a growing number of Sorters who have already qualified! As many of you have already heard, we have been given the opportunity to bring a RSNC sanctioned sorting to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Combining the World’s Largest Livestock Show with the World’s Largest Ranch Sorting Organization will undoubtedly be a huge success and we are excited to take center stage. The challenge is upon us to set a schedule where as many contestants as possible have a chance to participate without overwhelming the facilities and time that is available. We are up for the challenge and will have a schedule out soon so all RSNC members can start planning for this awesome opportunity to participate and promote our sport in front of thousands of spectators. On behalf of the entire RSNC membership I would like to thank the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Committee for extending this opportunity to our competitors. RSNC BRAZIL 10 A behind the scenes look With fresh new programs we are excited to announce that RSNC is going to have a fresh new look as well. at Ranch Sorting in Brazil. Before the end of the year you will see a brand new RSNC website. We believe it is time to upgrade and bring you not only a new look but also many new features that will improve the navigation and ease of information access. With that said, we will also be going completely digital with The Ranch Sorter. Starting in January, the magazine will be available in a page-by-page turning format on our website for all members to easily access. The website is our best source of communication with each of you and we want to be sure you have easy access to the latest exciting news coming from events all across the country and the RSNC HQ office. It should be here just in time for Christmas so Merry Christmas from the RSNC camp to each and every RSNC member. CHEYENNE, WY • JULY 23-26, 2015 PHOTOS BY OLIE’S IMAGES

The 2015 Big Daddy Summer Spectacular just hit an all-time record for team count with an astounding 1,736 teams. This was the 17th annual event that has been hosted by Wolfe Productions every year since its inception in 1998. Bruce Horrocks The event is known as the best possible summer get away for Ranch Sorters from all across the country. It is always held the last week of July during the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo where the top PRCA cowboys and cowgirls from around the globe show up to qualify for the WNFR. Without question, this brings an added level of esteem and excitement to the entire town making it a happening place to be for everything . There are cattle drives, rodeos, parades, tons of vendors and lots of nightlife to participate in. If you add all of that, plus cooler temperatures than any where in the South, you have a built-in attraction for the Ranch Sorting crowd. As always, the Wolfe family knows how to host a great production so teams are moved through with out a lot of delays. Classes are run in 3 sorting pens all at once so there is never a chance to get bored or wish Kyler Jeffery and Jaden Wolfe Lawyson Bledsoe it would go faster. They have been doing this now for 17 years and it is obvious they have learned how to produce a top-notch event. “Cheyenne was our very first attempt at a national level event and I remember way back in 1997 when we hosted the first Big Daddy Summer Spectacular with 1,200 teams,” said RSNC President Dave Wolfe. “We were totally exhausted and it took us a week to recover from what we thought was a massively unbelievable turn-out. Now, we look at Cheyenne as our party out the back door with Cheyenne just 35 miles north of our home. It is so much easier than traveling across the country to put on the big shows. We enjoy producing the Big Daddy and the great friends that return each and every year.” Congratulations to all of the winners from this year’s Big Daddy Summer Spectacular!

THE RANCH SORTER NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015 22 TULSA STATE FAIR 1 Tulsa, Okla., October 10-11, 2015 Wow, 885 teams from nine states! Thank you Oklahoma, Missouri, Colorado, Wyoming, Illinois, Tennessee, Texas, Arkansas and Kansas for making this a successful FUN show! Ed and I had considered retiring as RSNC producers after this state fair show—only because it was getting to be too much for us to handle. Well, when the show was over we got to thinking about how many wonderful friends we have made through RSNC and how much RSNC has done for us. So with Zac and Vanessa making the decision to come in as our partners, we have reconsidered and decided to have two spring shows and the Tulsa State Fair show next year. With your continued support and the support of our sponsors Sapulpa Equine Hospital, Kubota, American Heritage Bank, Tulsa Stock Yards and Mid America Feeds we hope to continue having successful RSNC shows. Thanks to Owanna, Donnie, Rowdy and Jimmy for running the show, Vanessa on the gate and the McAfee’s, Kevin Speer, Jeff Pulliam and, of course, Zac for all the cattle 33 work. We will see you in the Spring. WeEd Sort& Mary for FUN—Seriously! - Double R Ranch

THE RANCH SORTER NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015 24 IMPORTANT RATING GUIDELINES

It is important to the success of this association to assure there is a place for new novice riders to be competitive within our sport. The #1 Beginner and #2 Rookie rating must continue to be introductory levels. The definitions of the #1, #2 and #3 ratings are being printed for all contestants to review so it is clearly understood that if you are successful at the #1 or #2 rating you will automatically be moved. This is the only way for new contestants, who were just like you when you started, to have a fair introduction to the sport.

THE #1 BEGINNER This rating is only for those participants who are novice riders on novice horses and who have never won 3 checks or over $500 in any sorting or other cow horse competition. Once you win 3 average checks or $500 (excluding youth checks) you will automatically be moved to a number 2. This is only an introductory level and is probationary meaning if you or your horse’s skill dictates it you may be moved at any time.

THE #2 ROOKIE The #2 Rookie rating is only for those participants that have never been rated higher than a #2 in any sorting or other cow horse organization. To start at a #2 rating this rider must be a novice rider on a novice horse who has never won over a $1,000 in any sorting or other cow horse competition. Once a #2 Rookie’s earnings in RSNC sanctioned events reaches $1,000 (youth classes excluded) and that amount has been confirmed and recorded at the RSNC Headquarters, he/she will no longer be eligible to ride as a #2 Rookie unless their win/loss ratio is below a .60 in the #11 and below divisions. Then they will remain a #2 until they earn another $500, at which time they will be reevaluated for the .60 cut off, and if not above that ratio again at every $500 interval. They will remain a #2 until they surpass the .60 win/ loss ratio at which time they will automatically move up to a #3 Novice. This is a probationary rating meaning if you or your horse’s skills dictate it you may be moved at any time. If you have success please expect to move beyond the Rookie rating.

THE #3 NOVICE A #3 Novice is defined as a #3 rated contestant that is inconsistent in their ability to sort cattle whether it is because of their cattle reading ability, their ability to get successful partners and/or the ability of their horse. Any new member that has won over $1,000 in Ranch Sorting or other cowhorse competition in any and all associations combined will not initially be rated below a #3 Novice. Additionally, the #3 rating will be reviewed by win/ loss ratios in #11 and below divisions every 6 months (after the National Finals and State Finals). If a #2 has been moved to a #3 they will have the opportunity to move back to a #2 after re-evaluation at every 6-month interval. If they have attended enough events to fairly evaluate them and their win/loss ratio is below a .25 as a #3 they will have the option to move back to a #2.

NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015 WWW.RANCHSORTING.COM 27 OKLAHOMA STATE FAIR 3 Oklahoma City, Okla. • Sept. 18-20, 2015

This marked the seventh year for the Oklahoma State Fair RSNC Sorting. An awesome 783 teams, made up of friends from seven states, gathered for one heck of a show. The talented 8-year-old, Bleu Hall, finished second in the Rookie Sort with Larry Newport. They bested 84 teams and Hall sorted her first 10-header to win her reserve champion spot. It was exciting for all of us to enjoy that with her. The reserve prize 4 chairs were sponsored by Dr. DeRoy White DVM, Sapulpa Equine Hospital. Mike Welling and Joanne Coleman of Texas made their mark on the Oklahoma 5 State Fair, too—winning and placing in several divisions. Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy the Oklahoma Fair! See YouShelley All on the Trail!

THE RANCH SORTER NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015 30 NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2015 WWW.RANCHSORTING.COM 31 RSNC AUSTRALIA RSNC launches a new partnership with ABCRA to promote Ranch Sorting in Australia.

RSNC President Dave Wolfe and two of his sons, Logan and Kason, recently traveled to Australia to launch RSNC Australia. The new organization will be a completely separate LLC from RSNC USA, however it will serve as a partner in growing the sport worldwide. The Wolfe family hosted a clinic and competition in Dubbo and also in Tamworth over their 10-day stay. As seen in these photos it was definitely not all work and no play. They had a great time and enjoyed the Australian hospitality tremendously. The participants were eager to learn more about the sport and were very enthusiastic about wanting to start competing at sanctioned RSNC AU events. During the week the Wolfe boys got to tour the country and see many new and exciting things—like Kangaroos and Panda bears up close. They toured one of the largest sale barns in the country—reporting that the completely automated, exceptional facility was first class and second to none. Seeing some of the massive Outback also made a big impression on them with hundreds of miles of open country. Pictured are contestants, producers, and winners along with some of the fun things that they did. Many of the Australian contestants are planning a trip to the US RSNC World Finals in Forth Worth, Texas, next June. Please watch for opportunities in the future to make a trip to Australia to tour and compete with the RSNC AU members. If you ask Dave, Logan and Kason, it was a great experience and definitely worth doing again.
