Born in Barcelona in 1966. She's a medical doctor with a PhD in Public Health, a PhD in Theology, a feminist, anti-capitalist and a supporter of independence for Catalonia. The profound freedom and harshness with which she expresses her opinions on the medicalization of the body, sexuality and power cause small earthquakes every time she opens her mouth. Since April, she has been pushing a constitutional process to create a About Me new model of government in Catalonia. "The most precious thing anyone has is this ability to live life every day, taking risks, and extracting pleasure from that risk. So we're excited to see someone who lives openly. Perhaps I am showing my age by admitting how fast time runs! However quickly it has flown, this time has been rich for me personally as I have corresponded with and met so many good and faithful Benedictine women from around the world. I am in awe of the communion we share despite vast geographical expanse and different time zones, as well as languages and cultures. What draws us into communion is the one call we have received to follow Christ in the school of the Lord’s service – the school of our monastic community where we seek to live more deeply into God’s CIB Conference of Delegates participants gathered in Cuernavaca at the retreat center of the Misoneras Guadalupanas de Cristo Rey, OSB in September 2019. desire for us. Mexico provided an opportunity to come together as CIB delegates from around the world. For those of us able to attend, this was a real gift.

  • Gertrudis Feminist Ethics
1 Written in 2013, publication pending essay for the volume Feminist Catholic Theological Ethics: Conversations in the World Church, edited by the CTEWC (www.catholicethics.com) SAINT GERTRUDE OF HELFTA AND THE FORGIVING OF SINS Abstract: In 1179, the III Lateran Council prohibited the abbesses to forgive the sins of the nuns in their communities. Thirty-five years later, in 1215, the IV Lateran Council forced all nuns (abbesses included) to confess their sins once a year to a priest. Seventy years after this issue was clarified in Church Law, Gertrude of Helfta (1256 – 1301/02), saint of the Church and patroness of present day feminine Benedictine noviciates around the world, received from God the mission of forgiving the sins not only of the nuns in her community, but of all those, women and men (priests included), who sought her as their spiritual guide. This paper will analyze the experience of God of Gertrude with a special emphasis in her understanding of personal freedom and subjectivity and her astonishing discovery of the receiving pole in God. I will start placing Gertrude in her historical context and in the peculiar circumstances in which her community developed, and will pause to consider the fact that she is not an isolated figure, but belongs to what it has been known in the specialized scholarship as ‘the circle of women theologians from Helfta’. The analysis of Gertrude’s experience and thought will bring to the fore certain key-questions for theological anthropology and for ecclesiology today about the understanding of personal freedom in the believing subject and about the role of Church Law and the leadership of women.
