Maybe bec ause record buyers didn't understand what she was doing? Maybe young Americans didn't know who she was (the title assumes they did)? Maybe because she broke her mould and left many of her UK fans wondering what was going on, that she'd abandoned them somehow? Syllabus for Women in Rock: From the 1950s to the 1980s Instructor: Richie Unterberger, [email protected] OLLI Berkeley Week One: Women in Rock: The Early Years and The Girl Groups In the 1950s, rhythm and blues singers like Ruth Brown and LaVern Baker have some of the first rock’n’roll hits; Wanda Jackson and the Collins Kids are top rockabilly acts; and Brenda Lee becomes the first woman rock superstar. As New York’s Brill Building becomes established as the top place for rock publishers, women like Carole King, Cynthia Weil, and Ellie Greenwich become some of pop-rock’s most successful songwriters. Girl groups like the Shirelles, the Crystals, the Ronettes, the Chiffons, and the Cookies have numerous hits in the early 1960s, forming one of the major trends in rock of the period. In the early 1960s, some of the most R&B-oriented girl groups become some of the first soul stars, especially for Motown Records, with the Marvelettes, Martha & the Vandellas, the Supremes, and Mary Wells. Week Two: Women in Soul and British Rock Women soul singers emerge throughout the country, some of them more pop-oriented (Maxine Brown, Dionne Warwick), some of them earthier (Carla Thomas, Irma Thomas, Etta James). Aretha Franklin is anointed the Queen of Soul after moving to Atlantic Records and adopting a tougher, more spiritual sound. Other women soul singers with a forceful style emerge and increase in popularity, like Gladys Knight, Nina Simone, and the Staple Singers. Although all-male guitar bands dominate the British Invasion, a good number of women singers also make an impact both in their native UK and in the US.

Hulton/Archive Dusty Springfield became the most popular British female rock star of the 1960s, one of the most prominent white soul singers ever, and a major influence on subsequent generations of singers. Now widely acclaimed as one of the greatest voices of popular music, she was long an icon of gay and lesbian culture. Born Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien in London on April 16, 1939, she was educated in Roman Catholic convent schools. As an adolescent, Springfield was a bespectacled "ugly duckling." She joined her brother Tom in a folk combo, the Springfields. They became the most popular group in England prior to the advent of the Beatles. In 1962, with "Silver Threads and Golden Needles," the Springfields became the first British group to have a Top 20 hit in the United States. In 1963, inspired by the music of American girl groups, Dusty left the Springfields and embarked on a solo career. She changed from the "wholesome" Springfields style to a more trendy "Queen of the Mods" image, with fashionable clothing, excessive bouffant hairstyles, and heavy black mascara. In 1964, her first solo recording, "I Only Want to Be with You," made her the first "British Invasion" artist to enter the American charts in the wake of the Beatles. Springfield gained a wider audience by mixing American soul and British standards on her second album, Ev'rything's Coming Up Dusty (1965).

On 21 January DIM is being in the above format in the US by Analogue Productions. This issue only contains the 11 tracks from the original album and US Amazon is selling it for $34.98. This info came from the Amazon site - there is nothing about this issue yet on Acoustic Productions' site. According to the November edition of the UK magazine Record Collector this SACD was due to be issued in the US on 4 October. It wouldn't be a Dusty release if it wasn't delayed. While pursuing a degree in Nuclear Physics at Columbia University, he ended up working for the US Army Corps of Engineers on what came to be known as the Manhattan Project, whose responsibility was the development of the first atomic bombs. After the war, security concerns and red tape created a no-win situation: finishing his degree was pointless. A summer job after the war led to a career in the music business. He cut his first record in 1947 at the age of 22. He remained active in the business until shortly before his death at age 77. Early on, Dowd met the Ertegun brothers, Ahmet and Nesuhi. The Ertegun brothers had a record label, Atlantic Records, and they had the good sense and timing to hire Dowd and Jerry Wexler.

Just a Little Lovin’ Ted Greene Transcription by Anders Hagstrom “Just A Little Loving’” was written by songwriting couple Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil and was recorded by Dusty Springfield for her album “Dusty in Memphis,” originally released in 1969. This transcription of Ted’s arrangement is from a video recording made by Mark Joseph on his birthday party, December 19, 2004, where Ted was invited to perform. It’s a beautiful piece with some really nice harmonies, and it works great for these kinds of gatherings. Don’t be fooled by how easy it looks when Ted perform his arrangement. Most of the chords are very common, but there are some tough V-5 voicings that can make your fretting hand really sore, and then we add to that Ted’s usual double-stops and finger rolling techniques. I used Ted’s “chord grid” system for this transcription, and I had to skip a few notes here and there, but you can easily fill out the empty spaces yourself. Same thing with the last eight bars—I didn’t write out the rhythms for these. It was not very practical with Ted’s system, but I don’t think that affects the transcription in a bad way. There is a video available of this performance: JustALittleLovin’ and this will help you with this piece, but I do have a few additional comments: Measure 18 & 51: Ted fingers this C chord at the 3rd fret and play the melody on the high E string with his pinky. That is a big stretch, and difficult to get a clean sound, especially if your hands are small.

A little bac kground: this was Miss Dusty's first album for ABC/Dunhill, and her first album after her c ontrac t with Atlantic had been terminated. It was recorded in the fall of 1972 in California, around the time 'See All Her Faces' was being prepared for release. It also turned out to be her only album for ABC/Dunhill, as 'Longing' was never finished. This album has always been a curiosity of mine. When I first started USA getting into Miss Dusty's music 3 or 4 years ago, it seemed relatively 2606 Posts easy to find copies of all her albums on CD (as I hadn't yet succumbed to my vinyl addic tion) except for 'Cameo'. The only one I ever saw was on Amazon.com listed for $125. Though I now realize it was easy to think it was very rare sinc e I was new to her music , I've sinc e discovered eBay and it seems to pop up there from time to time for relatively normal pric es. That being said, it IS one of her harder albums to find; I've never read nor heard anything about publicity for it at the time it was released-it seems there WAS no public ity for it, though I know she sang 'Mama's Little Girl' and 'Of All The Things' on US television shows.
