  • T. Farnsworth, Inventor of Electronic Television
By Henry W. Dickow Book One Part Four Philo (Phil) T. Farnsworth, Inventor of Electronic Television Transcribed by Bob Rydzewski, Deputy Archivist and History Fellow, CHRS 1 The story of his great invention and its impact on society. A personal friend of the author, his life story here is one of the most interesting in the book. Introduction Success of electronic television is due primarily to two inventors, Philo T. Farnsworth of San Francisco and Vladimir Y. Zworykin of Camden, New Jersey. Little has been written about Farnsworth aside from the technical press, yet his contributions to television are of monumental importance. His electron dissector and multiplier tubes were two of the forerunners of numerous others which eventually brought television into the homes of millions. Said his biographer George Everson, “The story of Philo Farnsworth who, through perseverance and unending research rose from an obscure farm boy with an idea to a famed inventor with a discovery that is enriching our living, contains all the elements of a Horatio Alger tale. But the story of Farnsworth is true. Moreover, it didn’t take place in the days of Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, and other inventors—a period when America was “growing up” and when the vast field of science was first opening to historic discoveries. The story has occurred entirely during the twentieth century; it belongs to our generation. Farnsworth was a teen-aged youth when in 1922 he conceived his scientific idea for an all- electronic television system—the system that provided the basis for television in use today.

  • The Myth of the Sole Inventor]
Lemley [THE MYTH OF THE SOLE INVENTOR] The Myth of the Sole Inventor1 Mark A. Lemley2 Any elementary-school student can recite a number of canonical American invention stories. Thomas Edison invented the light bulb from his famous home laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, again from his home invention laboratory, famously using the phone to call his assistant, saying “Come here, Watson, I need you.” Orville and Wilbur Wright invented the airplane from their bicycle shop, taking it to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina to put it in the air. The list of lone genius inventors goes on and on: Samuel Morse and his telegraph, Eli Whitney and his cotton gin, Robert Fulton and his steamboat, Philo Farnsworth and the television, etc., etc. Patent law is built around these canonical tales. First written in 1790, in the first year of Congress, the patent law betrays its individual-inventor bias at various points, from the requirement that patents always issue to individuals rather than companies to the rule that the first to invent, not the first to file, is entitled to the patent.3 More importantly, the very theory of patent law is based on the idea that a lone genius can solve problems that stump the experts, and that the lone genius will do so only if properly incented by the lure of a patent. We deny patents on inventions that are “obvious” to ordinarily innovative scientists in the field. 1 © 2011 Mark A. Lemley. 2 William H. • Quixo-Journalism
u 7 Quixo-Journalism William Childers Over the course of three seasons at HBO (2012–2014), Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom defended journalism’s role as a pillar of democracy despite cor- poratization on the one hand and competition from social media on the other. As the anchor of the fictional Atlantis Cable News (ACN), Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels), egged on by the director of ACN’s news division, Charlie Skin- ner (Sam Waterston) and his executive producer MacKenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer), embarks on an avowedly quixotic “mission” to restore the civic engagement of his television audience. Faced with the reality crisis provoked by the media inflation David Castillo and William Egginton (C&E) analyze in Medialogies, the ACN team hopes to restore faith in the news media by re- viving the heroism of Edward R. Murrow in his legendary confrontation with Joseph McCarthy. Sorkin’s answer to the loss of traction against the Real that has eroded journalistic credibility is thus the raw courage of the lone news- man who goes before the camera and “tells it like it is” regardless of whose interests might be hurt, laying his integrity on the line and facing the conse- quences of his convictions. That this heroic figure was never anything but a simulacrum created by the medium of television itself is not acknowledged. Instead, it is underwritten, as we will see, by Don Quixote, thereby exploiting the aura with which our current medialogy endows the productions of the first age of inflationary media. In the wake of Trump’s electoral victory and the attendant collapse of journalism as we knew it, it is worth taking a look back at this recent attempt to shore up professional journalism’s monopoly on truthful representation.
