Resource partitioning among five sympatric mammalian herbivores on Yanakie Isthmus, south- eastern Australia Naomi Ezra Davis Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2010 Department of Zoology The University of Melbourne i Abstract This thesis combines multiple approaches to improve our understanding of large herbivore ecology and organisation in a contemporary assemblage made up of species with independent evolutionary histories on Yanakie Isthmus, Wilsons Promontory National Park, Victoria, Australia. In particular, this thesis compares niche parameters among populations of five sympatric native and introduced herbivore species by simultaneously assessing overlap in resource use along two dimensions (spatial and trophic) at multiple scales, thereby providing insight into resource partitioning and competition within this herbivore assemblage. Faecal pellet counts demonstrated that inter-specific overlap in herbivore habitat use on Yanakie Isthmus was low, suggesting that spatial partitioning of habitat resources had occured. However, resource partitioning appeared to be independent of coevolutionary history. Low overlap in habitat use implies low competition, and the lack of clear shifts in habitat use from preferred to suboptimal habitats suggested that inter-specific competition was not strong enough to cause competitive exclusion. However, low overlap in habitat use between the European rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus and other species, and preferential use by rabbits (and avoidance by other species) of the habitat that appeared to have the highest carrying capacity, suggested that rabbits excluded other grazing herbivores from preferred habitat. High overlap in habitat use was apparent between some species, particularly grazers, indicating some potential for competition if resources are limiting. -

[12th July, 1880.] HEREAS it is expedient to make better provision for the W Representation of the People in the Legislative Assembly and to amend and consolidate the Law regulating Elections to the Legisla tive Assembly Be it therefore enacted by the Queen's Most Excellent Majesty by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly of New South Wales in Parliament assembled and by the authority of the same as follows :— Preliminary. 1. In this Act the following words in inverted commas shall have the meanings set against them respectively unless inconsistent with or repugnant to the context— " Governor"—The Governor with the advice of the Executive Council. "Assembly"—The Legislative Assembly of New South Wales. " Speaker"—The Speaker of the Assembly for the time being. " Member"—Member of the Assembly. "Election"—The Election of any Member or Members of the Assembly. " Roll"—The Roll of Electors entitled to vote at the election of any Member of the Assembly as compiled revised and perfected under the provisions of this Act. Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. The Huntingfield area has a varied vegetation, including substantial areas ofEucalyptus amygdalina heathy woodland, heath, buttongrass moorland and E. amygdalina shrubbyforest, with smaller areas ofwetland, grassland and E. ovata shrubbyforest. Six floristic communities are described for the area. Two hundred and one native vascular plant taxa, 26 moss species and ten liverworts are known from the area, which is particularly rich in orchids, two ofwhich are rare in Tasmania. Four other plant species are known to be rare and/or unreserved inTasmania. Sixty-four exotic plantspecies have been observed in the area, most ofwhich do not threaten the native biodiversity. However, a group offire-adapted shrubs are potentially serious invaders. Management problems in the area include the maintenance ofopen areas, weed invasion, pathogen invasion, introduced animals, fire, mechanised recreation, drainage from houses and roads, rubbish dumping and the gathering offirewood, sand and plants. Approved Conservation Advice (s266B of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999) Approved Conservation Advice for Pultenaea baeuerlenii (Budawangs Bush-pea) This Conservation Advice has been developed based on the best available information at the time this conservation advice was approved. Description Pultenaea baeuerlenii, Family Fabaceae, also known as Budawangs Bush-pea, is a small erect shrub growing from 60 cm to 1.5 m tall (Leigh et al., 1984; Harden, 1991; de Kok & West, 2003). The ‘egg and bacon’ orange and yellow pea-shaped flowers form dense clusters at the ends of branches (DECC, 2005). Flowering occurs mainly from October to December, but has also been observed in autumn (Leigh et al., 1984; de Kok & West, 2003; DECC, 2005). Fruiting occurs from January to March (Leigh et al., 1984; de Kok & West, 2003). Conservation status Budawangs Bush-pea is listed as vulnerable. This species is eligible for listing as vulnerable under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cwlth) (EPBC Act) as, prior to the commencement of the EPBC Act, it was listed as vulnerable under Schedule 1 to the Endangered Species Protection Act 1992 (Cwlth). The species is also listed as vulnerable under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 (NSW). Distribution and habitat Budawangs Bush-pea is confined to the Budawang Range, Southern Tablelands, NSW (Harden, 1991). The species is known from only four sites in Morton and Budawang National Parks – Mt Currockbilly, Bhundoo Hill, Burrumbeet Brook and Corang Trig (DECC, 2005). -

NSW SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Final Determination The Scientific Committee, established by the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 (the Act), has made a Final Determination under Section 23 of the Act to list the Agnes Banks Woodland in the Sydney Basin Bioregion as a CRITICALLY ENDANGERED ECOLOGICAL COMMUNITY in Part 2 of Schedule 1A of the Act, and as a consequence to omit reference to Agnes Banks Woodland in the Sydney Basin Bioregion from Part 3 of Schedule 1 of the Act. This determination contains the following information: Parts 1 & 2: Section 4 of the Act defines an ecological community as “an assemblage of species occupying a particular area”. These defining features of Agnes Banks Woodland in the Sydney Basin Bioregion are described in Parts 1 and 2 of this Determination, respectively. Part 3: Part 3 of this Determination describes the eligibility for listing of this ecological community in Part 2 of Schedule 1A of the Act according to criteria as prescribed by the Threatened Species Conservation Regulation 2010. Part 4: Part 4 of this Determination provides additional information intended to aid recognition of this community in the field. Tinderry Round Flat Walk 2019
Walk Report Tinderry Range 7th March 2019 The Tinderry Range has been a favourite area for Wednesday Walkers with its spectacular views and opportunity to see several endemic plants. However, the news last year that the core area along each side of the summit road was, in fact, private property and up for sale (we had always assumed it was Commonwealth land next to the Nature Reserve) put all this in jeopardy. Our worst fears were realised when arrived today and saw ‘private no entry signs’ along the road plus a fence and gate with a bulldozed trail to the main ridge which will presumably lead to the house site. The only consolation was a Land for Wildlife sign. Hopefully, the new owners could be sympathetic to a visit from members in the future. We had a short walk along the roadside and noted the continued recovery of the shrub layer from the devastating 2006 fires, notably the prickly Leptospermum arachnoides in the hanging swamp that is now largely impenetrable. We continued down the road past the met station track, that also had a No Entry sign, to the Round Flat fire-trail inside the Nature Reserve. At this time of year, when there was little in flower, our main objectives were to relocate the Tinderry Pea and check out the Olearia glandulosa in the swamp. Our last visit here was in 2006 but it did not take much searching to find the original Tinderry Pea (unidentified Oxylobium/Podolobium) much reduced in size but still showing healthy regrowth from a clump of suckers. -

Ecology of Pyrmont peninsula iii Executive summary City Council’s ‘Sustainable Sydney 2030’ initiative ‘is a vision for the sustainable development of the City for the next 20 years and beyond’. It has a largely anthropocentric basis, that is ‘viewing and interpreting everything in terms of human experience and values’(Macquarie Dictionary, 2005). The perspective taken here is that Council’s initiative, vital though it is, should be underpinned by an ecocentric ethic to succeed. This latter was defined by Aldo Leopold in 1949, 60 years ago, as ‘a philosophy that recognizes[sic] that the ecosphere, rather than any individual organism[notably humans] is the source and support of all life and as such advises a holistic and eco-centric approach to government, industry, and individual’(http://dictionary.babylon.com). Some relevant considerations are set out in Part 1: General Introduction. In this report, Pyrmont peninsula - that is the communities of Pyrmont and Ultimo – is considered as a microcosm of the City of Sydney, indeed of urban areas globally. An extensive series of early views of the peninsula are presented to help the reader better visualise this place as it was early in European settlement (Part 2: Early views of Pyrmont peninsula). The physical geography of Pyrmont peninsula has been transformed since European settlement, and Part 3: Physical geography of Pyrmont peninsula describes the geology, soils, topography, shoreline and drainage as they would most likely have appeared to the first Europeans to set foot there. -
