Gantz MBA, University of Phoenix, 2009 BA, Trinity Western University, 1985 Doctoral Study Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Business Administration Walden University October 2020 Abstract Failure to increase revenues negatively impacts the sustainability and viability of businesses on a long-term basis. Some organizational leaders of the United States Sun Belt National Hockey League (NHL) teams do not possess the skills or experiences to take advantage of the opportunities developed from successful business applications to increase revenues. Grounded in Porter’s 5 forces model and Porter’s competitive strategy theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies used by organizational leaders of Sun Belt hockey teams to increase revenues. The participants comprised 5 organizational leaders from NHL teams located in Sun Belt locations of the United States who effectively used strategies to increase revenues. Data were collected from semistructured interviews, publicly available NHL information, and Sun Belt team websites. Yin’s 5-step data analysis was used to analyze the data with 5 themes emerging: customer acquisition and retention, market segmentation, promotion, unique value proposition, and product differentiation. A key recommendation is for Sun Belt organizational leaders not to rely on the traditional hockey fan to sustain or grow revenue but focus on women, families, and fans’ ethnicity. The implications for positive social change include Sun Belt leaders’ potential to increase meaningful employment to enhance the quality of life for local members of the community. One is in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Arguably three more should be. Six were NHL All-Star selections. Each one of them played professional hockey, whether it was in the NHL, WHA, or in the minors – they all made it to the pro level. And I am fortunate enough to have one of the two goaltenders for the 1968-69 Montreal Junior Canadiens – the team still widely considered the greatest junior hockey team of all time – to be sharing his story with me. Edward (Ted) William Tucker was born May 7th, 1949 in Fort William, Ontario. From his earliest moments of playing street hockey or shinny, Ted Tucker wanted to be a goaltender. Beginning to play organized hockey at the age of nine, there was minimal opportunity to start the game at a younger age. “At the time that I started playing hockey, there were no Tom Thumb, Mites, or Squirts programs in my hometown. There was a small ad in our local newspaper from the Elks organization, looking for players and asking which position you preferred to play. I asked my parents if I could sign up, and right from the get-go I wanted to be a goalie”. As a youngster, Tucker’s play between the pipes would take some time to develop, though improvement took place each year as he played.

I summarize the development and the history of job market regulation in professional team sports. Different types of salary caps and leagues are presented to create a comprehensive understanding about the topic. The theoretical implications of a salary cap are presented based on previous literature. Previous studies suggest that a salary cap has two main motivations: to balance the competition and to lower player costs. In the empirical part of the thesis I keep my focus in the National Hockey League (NHL). I test whether the consequences implied by theory are consistent with the results in the NHL after the introduction of the first league-wide salary cap in 2005. My aim is to find out if the competition has balanced during the regular season and during the playoffs. We characterize the parity among teams by the variance in the winning fraction from season-end standings data and quantify the predictability of games by the frequency of upsets from game results data. We introduce a novel mathematical model in which the underdog team wins with a ¯xed upset probability. This model quantitatively relates the parity among teams with the predictability of the games, and it can be used to estimate the upset frequency from standings data. What is the most competitive sports league? We 1 answer this question via an extensive statistical survey (a) of game results in ¯ve major sports.
