END-OF-SEASON HONOURS AND AWARDS

The following is a breakdown of awards that were given to the Seals for their accomplishments throughout the season, but there are here, admittedly, many holes. I asked the Seals Booster Club if a complete list of award winners existed, but unfortunately all they had were programs for the 1975 and 1976 award dinners. As for the other seasons, it was difficult to identify all of the award winners, sponsors, and names of awards since the newspapers of the time did not always go into great detail, if at all, about such things. Plaques and various other awards were also often handed out for hat-tricks, shutouts, first NHL goals, and other accomplishments, but these were not always reported in newspapers. The newspapers of the time did not always mention who selected the various award winners at the end of the season, but it can be assumed that if a winner was selected by the Booster Club, it remained that way every other year. Various other awards given to Seals players are also listed. These include all-star team appearances, WHL and NHL trophies, league championships, magazine awards, and other obscure honours that were bestowed upon the Seals. In most cases, where some players finished in year-end award voting is also included in the notes for each season.

WHL:

1961-62

Note: The Seals Booster Club was not created until September 1962. There is no evidence to suggest any awards were given to players at the end of the 1961-62 season.

1962-63

Lester Patrick Cup (WHL Champions) WHL All-Star Left Wing: Nick Mickoski

Coleman E. Hall Trophy (Team Leading Scorer): Nick Mickoski Player of the Year: Nick Mickoski @Golden Gate Trophy (Most Popular Player): Orland Kurtenbach Coliseum Cup (Hockey Supremacy in California)

Note: Starting in 1962-63, an award named the Coliseum Cup was given to the winner of the San Francisco-Los Angeles season series. The earliest mention I found of this trophy was in 1963, therefore, San Francisco, on the basis of a 10-5-1 record versus Los Angeles, took the Cup for 1962-63. It was presented to Seals captain Ed Panagabko by Ab England of the Los Angeles Coliseum Commission.

1963-64

Lester Patrick Cup

Coleman E. Hall Trophy: Charlie Burns @Booster Club Trophy: Charlie Burns @Golden Gate Trophy: Len Haley

Note: The Booster Club Trophy was given to the Seals’ Most Valuable Player. Los Angeles won the Coliseum Cup in 1963-64 with a record 4-11-1 record versus San Francisco.

1964-65

WHL Rookie-of-the-Year: George Swarbrick

Mel Swig Award: Wayne Connelly @Golden Gate Trophy: Len Haley @Booster Club Trophy: Charlie Burns @Most Improved Player: Paul Jackson Most Unrecognized Defenseman: Tom Thurlby Coliseum Cup

Note: According to “McDonald’s Ice Chips” in the March 27, 1965 edition of the San Mateo Times, the Coleman E. Hall Trophy (leading scorer) was renamed the Mel Swig Award, likely because Hall had moved on to the Vancouver Canucks that season. Tom Thurlby received a special award as the Seals’ most unrecognized defenseman. San Francisco won the Coliseum Cup for 1964-65 with a 10-7-1 record versus Los Angeles.

1965-66

Leading Scorer Award: Wayne Connelly +Larriburu Brothers Trophy: Wayne Connelly @Most Popular Player: Larry McNabb @Most Improved Player: John Gravel Most Outstanding Player: Gerry Odrowski (for most player-of-game awards during the regular season) @Special award for inspirational play: Joe Daley Coliseum Cup

Note: It is unknown what the name of the leading scorer award became in 1966; the Bay Area newspapers of the era do not mention its name. There is also no mention of the Golden Gate Trophy, which became known as the Most Popular Player Award. The Larriburu Brothers Trophy, given to the Seals’ Most Valuable Player, came with a $500 bonus. Goaltender Joe Daley had only played a handful of games near the end of the season, but received a special gift from the Booster Club for his inspirational play. San Francisco won the Coliseum Cup for 1965-66 with a 8-4-0 record versus Los Angeles.

1966-67

Oakland Tribune Scoring Award: Forbes Kennedy +Larriburu Brothers Trophy: Jack Evans @Most Popular Player: Jack McCartan @Most Improved Player: Jack McCartan

Note: The leading scorer award would be sponsored by the Oakland Tribune and would include a $500 bonus. There is no evidence in Bay Area newspapers to prove the Coliseum Cup was ever awarded for 1966-67. No newspaper articles could be found to prove awards for best defenseman or unsung hero were given that season.
