Ed Meagher Arena Unveiling
ED MEAGHER ARENA UNVEILING NOVEMBER 2013 NEWS RELEASE RENOVATED ED MEAGHER ARENA UNVEILED CONCORDIA STINGERS HIT THE ICE NHL STYLE Montreal, November 20, 2013 — Not only are the Concordia Stingers back on home ice after the reopening of the Ed Meagher Arena, they’re now competing on a brand new rink surface that conforms to National Hockey League specifications. The modernized arena features the latest and most cutting-edge technology on the market today — an eco-friendly carbon dioxide (CO2) ice refrigeration system. The technology, developed in Quebec, means the arena can operate 11 months a year, compared to seven using the former ammonia system. In addition to a new ice surface and boards, fans will appreciate the new heating system; the burning of natural gas has been replaced by recycled heat generated by the new refrigeration system. The renovations – made possible by a joint investment of $7.75 million from the Government of Quebec and Concordia — involved an expansion of 2,500 sq. ft. The new space boasts larger changing rooms, an equipment storage room, and two new changing rooms for soccer and rugby players. Other renovations include window replacements and a new ventilation and dehumidification system. ABOUT THE ED MEAGHER ARENA AND ITS ATHLETES The Ed Meagher Arena plays host to approximately 40 Stingers men’s and women’s hockey games a year. The Concordia hockey players proudly represent the university at an elite level competing against some of the best teams in North America. Over the years, many talented athletes — including Olympians and NHLers — have developed their skills as members of the Stingers or its founding institutions’ teams. -

Today's News Clips June 21, 2017
Today’s News Clips June 21, 2017 Chicago Tribune What Marian Hossa's announcement means for Blackhawks' salary cap Chris Hine June 21, 2017 Blackhawks winger Marian Hossa is facing a serious health issue and will not play in the 2017-18 season because of what he called a "progressive skin disorder" and the severe side effects associated with the disease's medication. Hossa's announcement means the Blackhawks will be missing one of their top players from last season (26 goals, 19 assists), a Hall-of-Fame caliber player who had a rebound season at 38. It will also have major implications on the complicated salary-cap situation for the Hawks — and it may end up providing them with some cap relief, although they'd rather have a healthy Hossa playing for them. Hossa signed a 12-year, $63.3 million deal with the Hawks before the 2009-10 season. Most of the money in the contract was frontloaded and Hossa stands to make just $1 million in each of the final four seasons even though he carries a cap hit of $5.275 million. Under the current collective bargaining agreement, which was signed before the 2013 season, the league would punish such long-term contracts if the player were to retire before the contract expires. Teams can face harsh salary-cap recapture penalties if a player retires before the end of a long-term deal. This is why Hossa saying he will just miss next season — and not formally retiring — is so important to the cap situation. The Hawks are likely to place Hossa on long-term injured reserve and could get relief on the $75 million cap from his absence. -

“World Hockey Association Comin' on Strong” Rememb
™ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Laurence Kaiser [email protected] Norb Ecksl [email protected] WORLD HOCKEY ASSOCIATION 50TH ANNIVERSARY REUNION LAS VEGAS – (January 22, 2021) To commemorate a very special day in sports history, many of the remaining members of the World Hockey Association, fans and celebrities will gather to celebrate the existence of the WHA that was born 50 years before. This reunion will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada from October 7, 2022 through October 11, 2022 where great and treasured moments will be fondly remembered. “WORLD HOCKEY ASSOCIATION COMIN’ ON STRONG” “The WHA means a lot to me and it was a very important part of my life. I look forward to being there and seeing everyone,” stated hockey legend Bobby Hull. “We are getting together for this great cause so that the WHA is remembered for the things it did for the game of hockey. I will enjoy reminiscing and hope that many of you will join me to celebrate.” Hull, the Golden Jet, is committed to the cause and will be in Las Vegas for the entire celebration. We are also honoring the godfather of the WHA and the original “disruptor” of professional sports, Dennis A. Murphy, along with other luminaries. REMEMBERING “A DAY THAT CHANGED THE GAME” The WHA had a great impact in changing the game of hockey in North America and abroad when the impossible happened. The fledgling league challenged the long- established National Hockey League (NHL), and for seven seasons presented an entertaining version of our great game. It all started as the puck dropped on October 11, 1 1972, when the Alberta Oilers defeated the Ottawa Nationals, 7-4, and the Cleveland Crusaders shutout the Quebec Nordiques, 2-0. -
“To Tend Goal for the Greatest Junior Team Ever” – Ted Tucker, Former
“To tend goal for the greatest junior team ever” – Ted Tucker, former California Golden Seals and Montreal Junior Canadiens goalie by Nathaniel Oliver - published on August 30, 2016 Three of them won the Stanley Cup. One is in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Arguably three more should be. Six were NHL All-Star selections. Each one of them played professional hockey, whether it was in the NHL, WHA, or in the minors – they all made it to the pro level. And I am fortunate enough to have one of the two goaltenders for the 1968-69 Montreal Junior Canadiens – the team still widely considered the greatest junior hockey team of all time – to be sharing his story with me. Edward (Ted) William Tucker was born May 7th, 1949 in Fort William, Ontario. From his earliest moments of playing street hockey or shinny, Ted Tucker wanted to be a goaltender. Beginning to play organized hockey at the age of nine, there was minimal opportunity to start the game at a younger age. “At the time that I started playing hockey, there were no Tom Thumb, Mites, or Squirts programs in my hometown. There was a small ad in our local newspaper from the Elks organization, looking for players and asking which position you preferred to play. I asked my parents if I could sign up, and right from the get-go I wanted to be a goalie”. As a youngster, Tucker’s play between the pipes would take some time to develop, though improvement took place each year as he played. -
