It’s one of the things that I admire about the PCA. Now, fast forwarding to 2019, balloonists have various ways to cover the requirement to attend a safety seminar. The BFA sponsors a web-based seminar as well as there being seminars going on in Oregon and Nevada in early spring. Balloonists who attend the PCA seminar experience an event during which they can interact with other balloonists, engaging with the presentations and group discussions. Everyone leaves the seminar gaining new perspectives and understanding. Past seminar survey results indicated attendees enjoyed group discussions and panel presentations so this year we placed the seminar focus on these formats. On April 6th, we had attendees from the Napa- Sonoma region, Reno, the Bay Area, Sacramento and of course the Central Valley. This year’s list of presenters were Dave Wakefield, Pat Moore, Dana Thornton and Larry Seiler, who covered the required seminar topics. Newer members Melanee Scarborough and Joe Lamberti gave us a new spin on crewing and crew safety. I’d like to thank everyone who helped this year’s seminar be successful -- those who helped with seminar organization, presenters, food and anyone who donated goodies for the sales table. We do start planning early for next year’s seminar so if you have any suggestions for topics, presentation formats, speakers, etc., please contact me (email me at [email protected]). Hope to see you out on the launch field. ~ Linda Walton Attendees sharing safety concerns and issues yielded lively discussions, various perspectives and offered great take-aways from the seminar © Pacific Coast Aeronauts — May / June 2019 Page 3 Downwind Chase Board Member Alta Fernandes -- ‘Member Planet’ presentation Crew safety and crown webbing Dave Wakefield’s presentation on event organizing Fur Crew Members are welcome! BFA President [email protected] © Pacific Coast Aeronauts — May / June 2019 Page 5 Downwind Chase by Jeanne Anson This Seminar took a unique approach to presenting the required Safety Seminar Topics. All pilots and crew were engaged throughout the day. It was not boring or repetitive. Andy Baird (Cameron Balloons USA) was the guide for the Accident review. An FAA rep from the Des Moines FSDO was able to give us a view of how the FAA would look at the facts of the scenario. The scenario was the following: a pilot attempted to land after throwing his baggie at a Watership Down Target. He had assumed that the pilot of the balloon on the ground in front of him would be deflating. The pilot didn’t so consequently he had to fly over it. Then vented hard before realizing the reason the balloon did not deflate was because of a small shed hidden from view preventing the deflation. The pilot immediately burned but did not arrest the descent and hit the shed. The passenger fell out, breaking her wrist. He landed in a tree line and turned over the deflation of his balloon to his crew chief and ran to assist with his passenger.
