Since the Irish and Oriental mythology are so nearly alike in many points, that the characters of the one usually find their counterpart in the other, it is no small confirmation of the Irish Saman's diluvian origin, when, on turning to the East, we find another Saman, whose character is quite un equivocal. We are told in a Cingalese poem 1 that in the island of black marble (i.e. Meru, i.e. Ararat,) beyond the seven seas (which surrounded it) a golden palace was erected. The Metamorphoses by the Roman poet Publius Ovidius Naso (Ovid) was published in 8 C.E., the same year Ovid was banished from Rome by Caesar Augustus. The exact circumstances surrounding Ovid’s exile are a literary mystery. Ovid himself claimed that he was exiled for “a poem and a mistake,” but he did not name the poem or describe the mistake beyond saying that he saw something, the significance of which went unnoticed by him at the time he saw it. Though Ovid had written some very scandalous poems, it is entirely possible that this satirical epic poem was the reason Augustus finally decided to get rid of the man who openly criticized him and flouted his moral reforms. In the Metamorphoses Ovid recounts stories of transformation, beginning with the creation of the world and extending into his own lifetime. It is in some ways, Ovid’s answer to Virgil’s deeply patriotic epic, The Aeneid, which Augustus himself had commissioned. Ovid’s masterpiece is the epic Augustus did not ask for and probably did not want. It is an ambitious, humorous, irreverent romp through the myths and legends and even the history of Greece and Rome. Through a structural analysis of memory in Greek mythology and philosophy, we may come to discern the particular role memory plays as the facilitator of vertical movement, throwing a bridge between the realms of humans and gods. The concept of memory thus plays a significant role in the Greek experience of the divine, as one of the vertical bridges that relates mortality and divinity. In the theology of Mnemosyne, who is Memory herself and mother of the Muses, memory connects not only to the singer-poet’s religiously efficacious speech of prophetic omniscience, but also to the idea of Truth itself. The domain of memory, then, shapes the way in which humans have access to the divine, the vertical dimension of which is expliticly expressed in the descent-ascent of the ritual passage of initiation. The present study thus lays bare the theology of Memory.

For her; feminism is not a gender problem or any confrontational attack on male hegemony. So, it is quite different from that of Virginia Woolf or Judith Butler. Her fictions always project a feminine sensibility from puberty to menopause. In English, one novel and two anthologies of short stories have been published to her credit. Bengali translation of two of her novels have been published from Bangladesh. In Oriya, there are eight short stories collections and eight novels in published form to her credit. Two of her novels and one of her short stories collection have been published in Hindi and one novel in Malayalam.     Princeton/Stanford Working Papers in Classics The Deadly Styx River and the Death of Alexander Version 1.2 September 2010 Adrienne Mayor Stanford University Abstract: Plutarch, Arrian, Diodorus, Justin, and other ancient historians report that rumors of poisoning arose after the death of Alexander in Babylon in 323 BC. Alexander’s close friends suspected a legendary poison gathered from the River Styx in Arcadia, so corrosive that only the hoof of a horse could contain it. It’s impossible to know the real cause of Alexander’s death, but a recent toxicological discovery may help explain why some ancient observers believed that Alexander was murdered with Styx poison. We propose that the river harbored a killer bacterium that can occur on limestone rock deposits. Some close friends suspected a legendary poison gathered from the Styx waterfall near Nonacris in Arcadia (north central Peloponnese, Greece), a substance reputed to be so corrosive it could only be contained in the hoof of a horse. Many ancient and modern writers have speculated on the true cause of Alexander’s death, which remains an unsolved mystery. Ancient historians were divided on whether Alexander died of natural causes or was murdered by poison.
