Coolmore Purchases Wootton Bassett Cont SATURDAY, 15 AUGUST 2020 COOLMORE PURCHASES GLOBAL ACTIVITY DURING TATTERSALLS ONLINE SALE WOOTTON BASSETT Tattersalls=s second online sale came to a close on Friday after two days of bidding, with the Donnacha O=Brien-trained 4-year- old colt Great House (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) (lot 12) topping trade of the Tattersalls August Online Sale with a bid of ,175,000 from Highclere Thoroughbred Racing. Previously campaigned by the Coolmore partners, Great House made a belated debut when second in a Gowran Park maiden on June 17 and he got off the mark going a mile and a half at Limerick 12 days later. He looks likely to continue his career in Australia. The Tattersalls August Online Sale attracted 16 entries, with one withdrawal before the start of the sale. Five of the 15 offerings sold for an aggregate of ,590,000, at an average of ,118,000 and a median of ,135,000. Among those not meeting their reserves was the G2 Airlie Stud S. winner Aloha Star (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), who was unsold at ,600,000. The Wootton Bassett | Coolmore stakes-producing mare Solfilia (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) was bought back for ,340,000, while Sweety Dream (Fr) (Dream Ahead), a Coolmore has purchased champion racehorse and sire young stakes-winning mare in foal to Night Of Thunder (Ire), was Wootton Bassett (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}BBalladonia {GB}, by Primo a ,330,000 buy back. Bred by Laundry Cottage Stud, Wootton Bassett was a ,46,000 yearling purchase by Bobby O=Ryan from the St Leger Sale in 2009. Trained by Richard Fahey, he went unbeaten through his first four starts in the UK before capping his 2-year-old campaign with a victory in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and thus earning French champion 2-year-old honours. Wootton Bassett stood for an initial fee of i6,000 but has been on a sharp upward trajectory ever since his first runners hit the racecourse. That initial crop yielded just 23 foals, but 15 of those became winners and two stakes winners, headed by the G1 Prix du Jockey Club and G1 Champion and G1 Irish Champion S. winner and European champion 3-year-old Great House | Tattersalls Almanzor (Fr), who for the past three seasons has stood alongside his sire at Etreham. Wootton Bassett continued to churn out high-quality horses over the three next years despite IN TDN AMERICA TODAY having served small books, adding the likes of G3 Prix la COUNTRY HOUSE TO STAND AT DARBY DAN Rochette winner The Black Album (Fr) and G3 Prix Reigning GI Kentucky Derby winner Country House (Lookin At Fontainebleau victor Wootton (Fr) to the coffers, and he has Lucky) will stand for $7,500 in 2021. "From his initial small crops in France, Wootton Bassett has achieved outstanding results," said Coolmore's David O'Loughlin. "His first crop of just 23 foals included Classic winner and European champion 3-year-old Almanzor; he's had two other colts finish second in the Prix du Jockey Club and two fillies finish second, beaten only a nose, and third in this year's French Guineas, and this all from i6,000 nominations or less. He strikes us as a real Classic stallion, he gets a very good type and is a total outcross with his pedigree free of the major European forces like Sadler's Wells, Galileo (Ire), Montjeu (Ire), Danehill, Green Desert, Invincible Spirit (Ire), Danehill Dancer (Ire) and Dubawi (Ire). We are thrilled that he is coming to Coolmore and are very excited about what he might achieve when paired with our Galileo mares." Haras d=Etreham=s Nicolas De Chambure added, "It has been an amazing journey, a real pleasure and a great pride for everybody at Etreham to be involved in Wootton Bassett's stud career as he established himself as the most exciting up-and-coming sire in Europe. WEDNESDAY, 23 OCTOBER 2019 SMULLEN: PROMOTION OF THE SPORT IS KEY HEART LEADS REDVERS TO By Pat Smullen SEA THE STARS COLT Oisin Murphy didn't end up with a big winner on Saturday but he's had a big year and that is the important thing. On Saturday I was thinking back to the work rate he has put in this year. He has ridden all over, travelling by plane, by helicopter, however he could get there to ride horses at two different meetings in a day, wherever they may be. His work ethic is something that needs to be applauded--that's what you need to do to be champion jockey. Oisin is not only an excellent rider but he is great for the game. He promotes our industry extremely well and I hope he does so for many years to come. I must admit, earlier in the year I was hoping that Danny Tudhope would be able to pull it off as the work that Danny has to put in to maintain his weight is phenomenal, and nobody sees that behind the scenes, but it wasn't to be.
