To achieve an overall rating for each race, Jenkins tallied the STALLION-MAKING RACES total number of >superior= (A-grade) and >good= (B-grade) sires to have won each race, and divided that figure by the number of overall colt winners of those races. The overall score is then expressed as a percentage. In fairness to current stallions, they must have at least three crops racing in order to provide a fair snapshot of their success at stud. Jenkins also acknowledged the issue of unequal opportunity. AOpportunity and success are more closely linked than many in the game would give credit for,@ he said. AThere is no doubt if a VRC or AJC Derby winner in the 1980s retired to stud, it was generally to a smaller farm who priced the horse modestly to ensure a book, but despite this, many of these stallions were poorly patronised in terms of numbers and quality of mares. You could argue that if they were truly great sires, they would overcome this handicap, and a handful did. Stallion-Making Races cont. The Underperformers... There are some surprising races at the opposite end of this table--both the Victoria Derby and the ATC Australian Derby feature among the bottom four, as does the ATC Champagne S., while the Blue Diamond fares only marginally better in 12th spot. AFor the past 30-odd years, the Victorian spring staying classic has failed to unearth a >superior= sire,@ Jenkins pointed out. AThree rather modest >good= stallions (King=s High, Blackfriars and Helenus) save the honour roll. AThe ATC Derby has unearthed the ill-fated Dr Grace and more recently Dundeel (NZ) as >superior= or >good= sires, but overall it has an even poorer record than the VRC Derby for producing quality stallions. ASurprisingly, just one >superior= sire (Redoute=s Choice) and two rated as >good= in the past 30-odds years sees the Blue Diamond come out with a low 23.1 per cent rating.@

Summary... So, which races are the true stallion-makers? AI think the results bear out that the Coolmore Stud S., with a rating of 50 per cent since becoming a Group 1 event, the Cox Plate (also 50 per cent) and the Newmarket, with a very good score of 60 per cent despite a low strike-rate of colt/entire winners, were all highly rated races for producing good stallions,@ Jenkins said. AHowever, not only did Rosehill=s Golden Slipper top the Magic Millions and obliterate the Blue Diamond, but its overall rating of 72.7 per cent winners who go on to be >superior= or >good= stallions is unmatched. Only the >average= sires Sepoy and Danzero and the hugely disappointing Tierce did not make it into the 'superior/good' category out of 11 candidates. The subsequent careers of Vancouver and Capitalist will be watched with much interest.@ For a full copy of the statistical analysis, please contact Peter Jenkins: [email protected].

The details were in a document distributed by Churchill officials to the Jockeys= Guild late Thursday. Many jockeys, particularly those who ride regularly in New York and California, were on the fence about riding in the Derby as, under the Aug. 24 guidelines, it would have meant missing the final two weeks at Del Mar and Saratoga and a number of major races. The new deadline makes the decision easier and could pave the way for many top jockeys to choose to ride in the Churchill races as they no longer have to give up mounts at their home tracks over the weekend of Aug. 29 and 30. For jockeys who regularly ride outside of Kentucky, it is still not clear what will be required of them in order to resume riding in their home states once the Derby is over. Kentucky is on a travel ban list in New York. Anyone traveling to that state must quarantine for 14 days once returning to New York. In order to ride at Churchill during the week, a jockey must declare his or her intentions to do so by Aug. 18 and contact Churchill officials by email.

It was announced earlier Friday morning that Churchill Downs will be requiring that all jockeys be in the state by Aug. 31 who will be riding in the GI Kentucky Derby. "The NYRA policy instituted on July 14 to address jockey travel and mitigate the spread of COVID-19 will remain in place through the end of the 2020 summer meet at Saratoga Race Course," Pat McKenna, NYRA communications director, said in a statement. "As such, any jockey traveling to Churchill Downs for Kentucky Derby week will not be permitted to re-enter the jockey colony at Saratoga. These travel restrictions are designed to protect the health and safety of the jockeys competing here in New York at a time when COVID-19 cases continue to rise in states across the country.@ McKenna added, "COVID-19 travel and testing protocols for jockeys seeking to compete at the fall meet will be announced at the appropriate time."

Pegasus S. - It=s kind of funny that this whole contest might hinge on the Pegasus. I=m going to grasp at straws here and hope to have a sizable lead again heading into the Derby. Big City Bob won twice over this track as a juvenile, including when he bested the re-opposing Skyscanner and Super John, three next-out winners and eventual MGSW Mischevious Alex in the one-mile Sapling S. He followed that up with a third in the GI Champagne won by Tiz the Law but featuring very little otherwise, and went to the sidelines after that. Big City Bob resurfaced in the Private Terms S. at Laurel and did no running. But now he gets back to the track at which both of his wins Ed DeRosa of Brisnet.com takes on TDN=s Steve Sherack and came for an outfit that=s winning at an extremely high clip this Brian DiDonato as they handicap Triple Crown prep races plus meet. Selection: #2 Big City Bob (8-1). the big three races themselves. The three will make $100 Win/Place bets in the preps and $200 in/Place bets in the Belmont, Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Highest bankroll at the end wins.

DeRosa - Bankroll: $5480 - Runhappy Ellis Park Derby Result - We had a bit of a chalk parade last weekend, but no regrets considering I picked both Tiz the Law and Art Collector and their wins in the Runhappy Travers and Runhappy Ellis Park Derby, respectively, sets up an exciting showdown in the Kentucky Derby, presented by Woodford Reserve on Sept. 5 at Churchill Downs. While their wins solidified their favorite status, there are still some horses looking to attain points toward a starting gate berth in the Pegasus S. on Saturday at Monmouth Park.

Pegasus S. - My Pegasus pick Skyscanner has something in common with Art Collector: they=re both by Darley-based stallion Bernardini. Skyscanner has raced four times, and by far his two best efforts came around two turns. Now he stretches out to 1 1/16 miles, and the rail should provide good positioning for a ground-saving stalking trip. Selection: #1 Skyscanner (10- 1).

Sherack - Bankroll: $3800 - Runhappy Ellis Park Derby Result - IN ORDER OF PURSE: My longshot pick Sprawl never fired. 1st-Del Mar, $59,526, Alw (NW1$X)/Opt.
