All the Summer and Fall did our artists plan and execute the splendid ideas displayed in this book. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Bom at Salzburg, January 27,1756; died at Vienna, December 5, 1791) The overture is scored for two flutes, two oboes, two clarinets, two b'assoons, two horns, two trumpets, kettledrums, and strings. It opens Presto, D major, 4-4, immediately with the first theme. The first part of it is a running passage of seven measures in eighth notes (strings and bassoons in octaves), and the second part is given for four measures to wind instruments, with a joyous response of seven measures by full orchestra. This theme is repeated. A subsidiary- theme follows. The second theme appears in A major, a gay figure in the violins, with bassoon, afterwards flute. There is no free fantasia. There is a long coda. * * * "Le Nozze di Figaro: dramma giocoso in quadro atti; poesia di Lorenzo Da Ponte,* aggiustata dalla commedia del Beaumarchais, 'Le Mariage de Figaro' ; musica di W. A. Mozart," was composed at Vienna in 1786 and produced there on May i of the same year. The cast * Lorenzo Da Ponte was bom at Ceneda in 1749. He died at New York, August 17, 1838. His life was long, anxious, strangely checkered. "He had been improvisatore, professor of rhetoric, and politician in his native land; poet to the Imperial Theatre and Latin secretary to the Emperor in Austrii; Italian teacher, operatic poet, litterateur, and bookseller in England; tradesman, teacher, opera manager, and bookseller in America." Even his name was not his ovra, and it is not certain that he ever took orders. He arrived in New York in 1805. See Mr. H. E. Laschi, who came here again a httle while ago, and La Sign. Bussani, a new singer, appeared in it for the first time as Countess and Page." The opera was performed nine times that year. Only Martin's "Burbero di buon cuore" had as many performances. But when Martin's "Cosa rara" met with overwhelming success on November 17, 1786, emperor and public forgot "The Marriage of Figaro," which was not performed in Vienna in 1787 and 1788, and was first heard thereafter on August 29, 1789. The first performance in the United States was one of Bishop's remodelled English version, in New York, on May 3, 1823. The first performance of the opera in Boston was in all probability Bishop's version. The last performance was the one given by the MetropoHtan Opera House Company in the Boston Theatre, April 15, 1904. The cast was as follows: Count Almaviva, Scotti; the Countess, Mme. Gadski; Susanna, Mme. Sembrich; Figaro, Campanari; Cherubino, Mme. Seygard; Marcellina, Mme. Bauermeister; Basiho, Reiss; Bartolo, Rossi ; Antonio, Dufriche. Felix Mottl conducted. Mr. John McCormack, tenor, was born in Athlone, County West- meath, Ireland, on June 14, 1884. Having been in school there, he went to Summer Hill College, Sligo, when he was twelve years old.

A. Mozart’s opera and concert arias for tenor are among the first music written specifically for this voice type as it is understood today, and they form an essential pillar of the pedagogy and repertoire for the modern tenor voice. Yet while the opera arias have received a great deal of attention from scholars of the vocal literature, the concert arias have been comparatively overlooked; they are neglected also in relation to their counterparts for soprano, about which a great deal has been written. There has been some pedagogical discussion of the tenor concert arias in relation to the correction of vocal faults, but otherwise they have received little scrutiny. This is surprising, not least because in most cases Mozart’s concert arias were composed for singers with whom he also worked in the opera house, and Mozart always paid close attention to the particular capabilities of the musicians for whom he wrote: these arias offer us unusually intimate insights into how a first-rank composer explored and shaped the potential of the newly-emerging voice type of the modern tenor voice.

The macroform, or overall structure, of each movement wasdetermined by the initial statement, frequency of use, andorder of each main thematic elementidentified. Theme groupings were then classified underformal classical prototypes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries (ternary,sonata-allegro, 5-part or 7-part rondo, theme and variations, and others), modified versionsof these forms (three-part design), or a variety of free sectionalforms. The chart and thematic illustrations are followed by a commentary discussing each movement aswell as the entire concerto. No correlation exists between styles andforms of the 33 concertos--the 26 composers usetraditional,individualistic,classical,and dissonant formsina combination of ways. Almost all works contain commonunifying thematic elements, and cyclicism (identical theme occurring in more than1 movement) is used to a great degree. None of the movements in sonata-allegroform contain double expositions, but 22 concertos have 3 movements, and21 have cadenzas, suggesting that the composers havelargely respected standards established in theClassical-Romantic period. FORD The AMICA, v.14, No 4, May 1977 Rudolph Ganz, distinguished pianist, composer, conductor,Duo-Art, Welte-Mignon and Ampico recording artist and phonograph recording artist was born in Zurich, Switzerland, February 24, 1877. His early studies were at the Zurich Conservatory with Robert Freund in piano and cello with John Hegar. Later he went to Lausanne to receive piano instruction from his uncle, Carl Eschmann-Dumur, and composition with Charles Blanchet. At the Conservatory in Strasburg, Alsatia, he was the pupil of Fritz Blumer. Going to Berlin, he studied piano with Ferruccio Busoni and composition with Heinrich Urban. At the age of ten he appeared in public for the first time as a cellist in his home town. He turned to the piano as a future choice in instruments and at the age of twelve made his pianistic debut in 1889 in Zurich. Many concerts were made after his Zurich debut. At his Berlin debut he performed the Beethoven Concerto in E Flat and the Chopin E Minor Concerto. His first appearance as an orchestral conductor was in May of 1900 conducting the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in the performance of his first symphony. It was in this year when he composed a piano and orchestra composition entitled "Konzertstuck." In July, 1900 he married an American concert singer, Mary Forrest. In June 1784, Giuseppe Sarti passed through Vienna on his way from Milan to St. Petersburg, where he would succeed Giovanni Paisiello as director of the imperial chapel for Catherine the Great. On June 2 Sarti attended a performance at the Burgtheater of his opera buffa Fra i due litiganti il terzo gode, which was well on its way to becoming one of the most highly successful operas of the late eighteenth century. At the order of Emperor Joseph II, Sarti received the proceeds of the evening’s performance, which amounted to the substantial sum of 490 florins.1 Fra i due litiganti, premiered at La Scala in Milan on September 14, 1782, had been an immediate success, and within a short time began receiving productions in other cities. It was performed in Venice under the title I pretendenti delusi; and it was the third opera produced in Vienna by the newly re-established opera buffa company there in the spring of 1783. By the time of Sarti’s visit to the Hapsburg capital a year later, Fra i due litiganti was the most popular opera in Vienna. It had already been performed twenty-eight times in its first season alone, a total unmatched by any other operatic work of the decade. Signature: ______________________________________ Name in Full: ______________________________________ Date: ______________________________________ iii ABSTRACT Pietro Alessandro Guglielmi’s opera buffa or bernesca, titled Lo spirito di contradizione, premièred in Venice in 1766. It was based on another work that had successfully premièred in 1763 as a Neapolitan opera: Lo sposo di tre, e marito di nessuna. The libretto for Lo sposo di tre, e marito di nessuna was written by Antonio Palomba, and concerns a man who attempts to marry three women and escape with their dowries. In setting this opera, Guglielmi collaborated with Neapolitan composer Pasquale Anfossi, with the former contributing the Opening Ensemble, the three finali and the Baroness’s aria in the third act. After moving to Venice in the mid 1760s, Guglielmi requested Gaetano Martinelli to re- fashion the libretto, keeping the story essentially the same for his new opera Lo spirito di contradizione. Guglielmi wrote all the music for his new production, retaining some of his former ideas. I argue that Pietro Alessandro Guglielmi was a prominent composer and significant eighteenth-century industry figure whose output should be re-incorporated into the repertory of modern performance.
