SiNGAPOKE Printkd at the Methodist Publishing Hou.sb:, 1911. ; — "The Baffles Library, the older and to the Singapore European resident the more important half of the Raffles Library and JIuseum, is an ofEspring of the ' Singapore Library ' founded in the year 18i4 as a Proprietary Library. When in 1874 Government decided to establish a Public Library and :Museum—thenoe forward on the suggestion of H. E. the late Sir Andrew Clarke the then Governor called the ' Raffles Library and Museum '-^the 'Singapore Library' was trans- ferred to the new institution, Government merely paying its debts of about $500 and allowing the Proprietors to become Life Jlembers. The Library then contained only about 3000 volumes, the acquisition of thirty years, whilst during the last thirty years it has grown to more than 26000 volumes." Extract from Catalogue, 1900. The present catalogue is arranged on a plan that differs slightly from previous ones, as cross-reference has been facilitated, inasmuch as both Titles and Authors have been classified and not Authors only as was formerly the ease. There are three sections : 1. Fiction (a) Titles, (p. 1). (b) Authors, (p. 78). 2. Miscellaneous (a) Titles, (p. 170). (b) Authors, (p. 246). 3. A short classified Index of Subjects and Authors, (p. 329). It has been thought advisable to retain foreign particles in their position at the beginnings of titles of books, but, according to custom, English particles have been transposed in Sections I (a) and II (a). The perfect subject catalogue has yet to be devised. Some works are so indefinite or have so wide a range that no system can be scientifically satisfactory ill all cases. The third section of this catalogue should be regarded as containing suggestive lists rather than exhaustive references. C. F. C Ayhb Acting Director, Raffles Library and Museum. Singapore.
