NEIL GIULIANO The Campaign Within A Mayor’s Private Journey to Public Leadership In June 2012, Neil Giuliano’s first book, The Campaign Within, will be released by Magnus Books. Brave and compelling, The Campaign Within demonstrates that the greatest campaigns are not the ones taking place within the public realms of electoral politics but the personal ones inside each and every one of us. In The Campaign Within, Neil Giuliano shares in candid and revealing detail his long private journey from a shy self-doubting kid with a secret in an Italian-American Catholic family to making history as the first openly gay mayor of a U.S. city over 150,000 in population. About the Author Neil Giuliano is an educator, activist, philanthropy advisor, leadership coach, speaker and senior level executive. A former mayor and president of a national advocacy organization, he has been involved with community service and public affairs his entire career. Neil made his mark in politics as a multiple term mayor of Tempe, Arizona between 1994–2004. His leadership transformed a dry riverbed in the middle of the desert into a 2-mile long urban lake with Class A office and residential space as well as a new $65M Performing Arts Center. He wrote the proposal for and then co-chaired hosting the third debate of the 2004 United States presidential elections. He served as President of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) from September 2005, and stepped down from the post in June 2009. In December 2010, he was appointed CEO of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. He currently divides his time between San Francisco and Tempe, AZ. With LGBT individuals, organizations and issues more visible than ever, including a voice with credibility, history and a solid understanding of the landscape is vital. At GLAAD, he expanded the organization’s media advocacy and anti-defamation work to include religious and faith- based communities, sports, and advertising media. Under his leadership, the GLAAD Media Awards appeared for the first time on Bravo. In December 2010, Giuliano was appointed CEO of San Francisco AIDS Foundation, bringing over three decades of executive leadership experience to the foundation. Established in 1982, San Francisco AIDS Foundation is one of the oldest and largest AIDS organizations in the world. Through education, advocacy and direct services for prevention and care, everyday the foundation confronts HIV in communities most vulnerable to the disease. Achievements § In 1994, Neil became the youngest person ever elected mayor of Tempe, Arizona (pop: 175,000) and served for a decade, retiring in 2004. § In 1996, Neil publicly acknowledged that he was a gay man, which made him the first openly gay mayor of a city with over 150,000 population in the United States. Facing attacks from religious right opponents, he won re- election three more times, his last with 70% of the vote. He then won a recall election engineered by anti-gay activists with 68% of the vote in an election with the highest turnout since the first election when people 18 years old could vote. § Neil’s ten years as mayor won bi-partisan praise from those he worked with, including Senator John McCain and then-Governor Janet Napolitano, included a term on the board of directors of the National League of Cities and earned Tempe “All-American City” status in 2003, considered the “Oscar” of local government problem-solving success. § Concurrently to his holding office, Neil had a 25-year career as a senior administrator and Faculty Associate at Arizona State University. § For over a decade now, Neil has been among the nation’s most visible and effective leaders of the philanthropic movement for gay equality, earning recognition in 2005 as one of Out Magazine’s Out100, which recognizes the 100 most influential people in gay culture. He was also named one of the Top 25 of 2005 by Instinct Magazine.
